In China, many students spend much of their time on their studies, and don’t help with housework at home. As a result, they lack(缺乏) basic(基本的) skills.
Luckily, things are changing. Last year, many schools began to teach students life skills. Guangming Middle School in Sichuan set up some farming clubs. There students learnt to plant vegetables. “At first I thought I could only learn to grow some vegetables here, but actually, I learnt a lot about vegetables.” said Chen Jia, a girl at the school.
In Hope Middle School, students have a special life skill class: they learn to make dumplings in different kinds of shapes. “I couldn’t make dumplings before, but now I am good at doing it. I really love my life skill class. It’s my favourite class.” said Zhang Yan, a boy at the school.
In fact, learning life skills is as important as learning Chinese and maths, because it helps us prepare for our future life. Boys and girls, do you help your parents do housework at home? If not, maybe you should get started now.

Hello, I’m Paula, a student in Greenwood International School in
Cooking was once regarded as a necessary part of education. But in recent years, it has become less important in schools. As a result, basic cooking and food preparation skills are being lost. It is also making more children overweight, as parents use too much fast food is harmful to their health.
The government is worried and is looking for ways to solve the problem. A new law has been made. It requires all secondary schools (中学)to offer cooking lessons to students aged from 11 to 14 years old. They hope that this will encourage people to cook instead of eating ready meals, fast food and snacks.
Students will learn to cook twice a week. They will learn to use simple and fresh ingredients to prepare healthy, tasty food, following instructions. Schools are also setting up cooking clubs all over the country. The clubs will provide more children with the chance to learn to cook. The children can learn to cook many kinds of food in the clubs.
There are still difficulties. Head teachers are worried about the things they will need for the cooking. And about 15% of schools do not have kitchens and there are not enough teachers.
The speaker from the government promises to train 800 teachers and to give schools million pounds a year to help children from poorer families to pay for ingredients.

Do you feel strange when your dog begins barking (吠叫) at an empty corner of a room, at a door, or at a place where nothing seems to take place at all? Is the dog communicating with something that humans can’t see? Or does it simply want to drive its owner crazy?
According to experts, the most common explanation for sudden barking is that it’s not really sudden at all. Instead, it’s likely that humans are simply unable to sense some of the things, but dogs can.
Dogs have excellent hearing. So they can discover sounds that are higher in pitch (音高) . A study shows a dog could be reacting (反应) to a noise that a person nearby wouldn’t be able to hear-possibly an alarm from far away.
Dogs are also able to see better in the dark than humans. This is because they have the ability to get more light into the eyes. If a dog is barking at an empty yard at night, it’s possible that something has caught its attention, like a leaf, a wild animal or a thief.
That’s not to say that dogs only bark when they sense something. Some dogs might bark because they feel bored and a walk is probably needed. They might also be trying to get their owners’ attention.
Experts say that owners should avoid punishing their dogs for barking, since they’re simply trying to remain watchful. Instead, owners can try to comfort their dogs to show that they know their worry. But if a dog barks all the time, its owner might consider a trip to the doctor.
Why do dogs bark suddenly? Actually, it isn’t really sudden at all because humans can’t |

The program, National Treasure, is liked by people. To make ancient relics (遗物) come alive, the program shows treasures in different ways. Each treasure is shown by “national treasure keepers”. They tell us the background of the treasures. They also tell us their own stories. Hong Kong actor Liang Jiahui calls himself a “half Palace Museum man” because he spent a lot of time at the Palace Museum making the movie Reign Behind a Curtain (垂帘听政). Every time he visited the Palace Museum, he felt excited. The program National Treasure touches millions of people’s heart. The former (以前的) head of the Palace Museum, said the show encouraged more people to visit museums. It suggests that cultural values and history are becoming people’s interest.

Teenagers, however, have many more opportunities to get stressed than people in any other age group. Being a teenager is hard. You are not a child any more, but you are not an adult, even though you have to deal with some very grown-up problems and decisions. Families can be one of the biggest causes of stress, such as problems with parents arguing at home, or problems with brothers and sisters. Teenagers also have a lot of stress from school, either from their teachers or from their friends. Some teenagers also feel stressed about choosing their education after high school. Getting a place at university can be very difficult and some cannot afford to go to university. The stress about getting a job when finishing school is hard for some teenagers. There are so many young people finishing school and not enough jobs for them.
Sadly, there is nothing we can do to remove (除掉) these causes of stress from the lives of teenagers, but you can learn the best way to deal with it. Talking to people is one of the best ways to deal with stress. It may sound simple, but it is true. A problem shared is a problem halved (把……减半).
