For centuries, China has been known as “a state of ceremonies” which means Liyi Zhibang. There was much greeting etiquette in ancient China. And the fist-and-palm salute (拱手礼) was quite a classic example. Today, although Chinese people usually shake hands when meeting friends and relatives, people still make fist-and-palm salutes when they are paying a visit to someone during the Spring Festival or attending someone’s wedding or birthday reception.
The fist-and-palm salute has a history of more than 3,000 years. Since the Western Zhou Dynasty, people had already performed it when meeting peers. In ancient times, if people met a stranger, they would tend to prepare for a fight if necessary, and their hands were always ready for holding any weapon (武器). Holding hands together pointed towards themselves was a gesture of saying “relax” meaning “I’m not with any weapons and I’m not here to pick a fight.” Later, it became the etiquette when people met each other or showed thanks.
So, how should people do the fist-and-palm salute properly? Firstly, stand at attention. If you’re a man, make a half fist with your right hand, then hold the right hand with your left hand in front of your chest, look at the person, raise both hands to the eyebrow (眉毛), bend down and shake hands gently three times. At the same time, you can also say some lucky greeting words. If you’re a woman, you should do it the other way which should be the right hand on the top.
People may be more familiar with the hold-fist salute, called Baoquan li in Chinese. It is widely used among the kung fu masters and students. This gesture is formed by holding the right fist very tightly closed and covering it with the left hand open, and extending both arms slightly forward in front of the chest. Make sure the left thumb is close to the index finger (食指) and don’t point it at yourself, as it shows arrogance (傲慢).
1. What does the underlined word “etiquette” in Paragraph 1 mean?A.Need. | B.Manners. | C.Time. |
A. | B. | C. |
A.keep his right hand open |
B.put his right hand on his left |
C.not point his left thumb at himself |

Each time I take a plane and get ready for a long-hour flight, the same thought goes through my mind: why can’t planes be faster? Everything else is speeding up: smartphones, the Internet, the speed of life in general! So why can’t we get a superfast passenger plane?
Speed has always interested engineers and pilots. At least at first, they were pretty good at getting these metal birds to fly faster and faster. As long ago as 1945, a German test pilot reached a speed of 610 mph (miles per hour). But then, something happened, and the speed stopped growing. In fact, it’s slowing down! Any guesses why? Because unlike riding a bike down the hill, there’s no surface of the road trying to push the front wheel this or that way. No, it’s all air! Besides air, there’s this thing called aerodynamics. That’s a word for the movement of air around a certain thing. If you’ve put your hand out of the car window, then you know how much force (力) air can have. When the car moves fast, the air will hit your hand so hard that you may have trouble pulling it back.
Faster doesn’t mean better. A plane isn’t always in the air—you also have to consider take-off and landing. Those two situations can be quite dangerous at high speeds. Taking the speed down a bit is also more comfortable for passengers since the ride is less noisy.
Another reason is about engines (引擎) and fuel (燃料). The faster the plane is flying, the more the engines have to work. If the engines are always working fully, they won’t last long and need to be repaired more often. Also, they burn more fuel, which makes ticket prices higher and fewer people will choose the plane trip.
After all these years of experience, plane engineers have found the best speed of flight: 560 mph. That’s because safety always comes first. One day, the best scientific minds will come up with something to make planes faster, comfortable and affordable!
