China’s 71-metre-tall Leshan Buddha (佛像), the largest stone Buddha in the world, re-opened to the public after experts carried out emergency restoration on the 1,300-year-old statue. The repair (修理) project started in October last year and the scaffolding (脚手架) was removed in late March after experts mended the cracks (裂纹) on the statue. Tourists are once again able to see the entirety of the towering (高耸的) sitting Buddha from the Min River by the mountain.
The Buddha was built in 713 AD during the Tang Dynasty at the meeting point of three rivers, the Min River, Qingyi River and Dadu River. The statue is based on the image of Maitreya, which is regarded as the future Buddha. It is next to the Lingyun Temple on Lingyun Mountain in Leshan. Lingyun Temple means the “cloud side” temple in Chinese, and the name means the high altitude (海拔高度) of the huge statue. It is said that in ancient times, many boats sailed past Leshan, and therefore the monks at the Lingyun Temple decided to build a Buddha statue to save living creatures. It took them about 90 years to complete the religious and artistic masterpiece. The statue is so great that people from all over the world come to visit and admire (欣赏) the wonderful work.
A worker said the Buddha had some cracks on its face, chest and stomach after being out in nature for more than a thousand years. The damage could have caused rocks to fall and endanger the tourists. An expert said the latest repair was not “systematic restoration”, but a “scientific and research project”. The repair project could lay foundation for the future overall protection of the Buddha, the expert told Xinhua News Agency.

The Moonwalkers were invented by an American company called Shift Robotics. A pair of the Moonwalkers looks like the lower part of a pair of roller skates (旱冰鞋). The walking devices can be fixed to the bottoms of usual shoes. But you can’t skate with the Moonwalkers. You can just walk with them the way you do with usual shoes.
Each Moonwalker weighs about 1. 9 kilograms. The machine in it makes eight wheels go. There’s also a gearbox (变速箱) and a few sensors (传感器) in each Moonwalker. These sensors collect information about the wearer’s walking. The gearbox then uses the information to help change the speed of the Moonwalkers. When it’s necessary, the gearbox will slow down the shoes to prevent accidents. And when the wearer has to take the stairs (楼梯), he or she can lock the wheels to go up and down the stairs safely.

If the same two people meet again, even years later, they pick up the friendship. This can be quite difficult for us Chinese to understand. Friendships between us develop more slowly but may become lifelong feelings, extending (延伸) deeply into both families.
★ . Although Americans treat friends warmly in their personal everyday lives, they don’t show their politeness to them if it requires a great deal of time. But in China, we are usually generous with our time. We, as hosts, will appear at an airport even in the middle of the night to meet a friend. We may take a day off from our work to act as guides to our friends. It is opposite in America. Americans cannot manage the time to do a great deal with a visitor outside their daily plans. They will probably expect the visitors to get themselves from the airport to the hotels. And they expect the visitors will phone them from there. Once the visitors arrive at their homes, the welcome will be full, warm and real.
For Americans, it is often considered more friendly to invite a friend to their homes than to restaurants, except for business matters. Americans are ready to receive us foreigners at their homes, share their holidays, and their home life. So accept their hospitality (好客) at home and enjoy your visit in America!

At 10:44 am on June 5th, 2022, the Shenzhou XIV spacecraft rose into the sky. Another three Chinese astronauts, Chen Dong, Liu Yang and Cai Xuzhe, set off for the Tiangong Space Station.
During their six-month stay, they will set up tools and do medical tests. It’s not an easy job to do all these things. Chinese astronauts get difficult training before going to space. All the Chinese astronauts are excellent pilots(飞行员)with thousands of hours of flying experience. They also receive hundreds of classes to prepare for space travel.
One of the hardest parts is the high-G training. Sitting in a super-fast spinning(旋转的)machine, astronauts’ faces change shape. They can’t help crying. Blood can’t get to their heads well, causing even blindness(失明). Astronauts must operate the spacecraft under such conditions.
When Chinese astronauts do the high-G training, they have a red button(按钮)on hand. If they can’t continue, they can stop the machine. But for more than 20 years since China set up its first astronaut team in 1998, nobody has ever used it. “The ‘stop’ button is never in our hearts,’’ said Wang Yaping, the first Chinese woman to take a spacewalk.
Another exercise is the underwater training which lasts seven hours each time. In a weightless environment, the astronauts have to wear the 200-kilo clothes and do the training in 10-metre-deep water without eating or having a break. After each training, they might lose up to 2kg of body weight.
“We may have to do such training every day for many years,” said Wang. “But there is no ‘give up’ in our dictionary.” They are our heroes.

In 1958, while digging a new waterway, some local farmers found several pieces of ancient pottery (陶器). In 1961, archaeologists (考古学家) began a serious study there. They discovered a large number of pottery items, spinning wheels, dishes and knives. They also discovered two tombs (坟墓). These discoveries proved that there is a 4,000-year-old culture here. The relics park was built right on this historical place.
The park includes a farmland protection area, a cultural area and a Chinese-style water town. Rice, corn, sunflowers, pears and peaches are grown in the farmland protection area. The water town provides a perfect place for tourists to stay the night and have a rest.
The cultural area is the most important part of the park. It is made up of ten museums and memorial halls. The most popular one is the Guangfulin Cultural Museum. It’s built underwater with its roofs (屋顶) on the surface.
You can find many shops, cafes and teahouses in the park. Visitors can find a quiet place with books and tea at the Duoyun Bookstore, for example. Events like lantern shows and archaeological speeches are held in the park throughout the year.
