Although it was only autumn, everything outside was colored white. Unexpectedly (出乎意料地), we were hit by a big snow storm and no one was prepared.
We have two apple trees in our backyard. Prana, our dog, loves apples. When she goes outside, she usually digs out a dirty apple from the ground and then quickly eats it.
On the day that it snowed too early in the season, Prana went outside and I watched her from the window. I noticed that she was digging lots of holes and then bringing out the apples buried under the snow. She seemed to be glad to dig out as many apples as she could.
But when she came back inside, she brought back only one. About five minutes later, I looked outside. The yard was completely covered with birds. Prana had dug up all those apples for her bird friends to eat. She knew that they hadn’t prepared enough food for the early terrible “winter” .
This beautiful act of unselfish (无私的) love from an animal taught me what real kindness was.

They spent hours and hours, day after day, on their bicycles, riding up and down the footpath, and at the front of the house. We also rode together as a family a lot. Bicycling was a great way to get the kids out of the house and into the fresh air without spending any money.
Bradley had discovered that his bicycle had been stolen from our backyard in Campbelltown, South Australia, when he and his sister went outside for a morning ride. He couldn't believe that someone would do this.
He got a large piece of cardboard, painted a sign begging for the bicycle to be returned, and tied the sign to the letterbox. The following morning, when I went out to collect the mail, I found a white envelope with the magical words, "Buy yourself a new bicycle", There was a $100 banknote inside.

One day, my mother was sewing a quilt(缝被子). I silently sat beside her. “Mum, is there love between you and Dad?” I asked in a very low voice.
With surprise in her eyes, she stopped her work for a while. Then she said, “Susan, can you see the thread(线)? It can hardly be seen, but it’s really there. It makes the quilt strong. If life is a quilt, love should be a thread. Love is inside.”
I couldn’t understand her until the next spring. At that time, my father suddenly got sick seriously. My mother had to stay with him in the hospital for a month.
After they were back, my mother helped my father walk slowly on the country road every day. They were so kind to each other and it seemed they were the happiest couple.
After two months my father still couldn’t walk by himself. “Dad, how are you feeling now?” I asked him one day.
“Susan, don’t worry about me.” he said. “I just like walking with your mum. I like this kind of life.” Reading his eyes, I knew he loves my mother deeply.

Nicklen lay down on the ice to get a better photo. The swimming bear climbed onto an ice floe (浮冰). Unluckily, it broke, and the bear fell back into the water. The polar bear couldn’t find a meal, and had to swim farther away to find food.
Polar bears need ice to hunt seals (猎取海豹)— their favourite meal. They stand on the ice floes, and wait for the seals to come up for air. However, because of global warming, Arctic temperatures are rising and polar ice is melting (融化). As polar ice melts, polar bears have to swim farther to find ice floes. Sometimes, bears have to swim more than 200 kilometers to find an ice floe. Some bears cannot swim that far and, sadly, they die in the water.
On his last trip, Nicklen saw three polar bear bodies. Before global warming influences the Arctic, a dead polar bear is hardly seen. Wildlife experts (野生动物专家) think that global warming will have a terrible influence on polar bears. In the future, polar ice will continue to melt. Some scientists believe that about two thirds of the world’s polar bears will disappear by 2050.

I didn’t even realize that I had taken both my father’s shoes and his wallet. As I made my way to the bus station, I felt some pain in my foot. I found that the shoe had a hole in it.
There were no buses around. Not knowing what to do, I looked in my dad’s wallet. To my surprise, there wasn’t much money inside. I also found a note from his manager. It asked him to wear nicer-looking shoes to the office.
I remembered my mother asking him to buy a pair of new shoes, but he said that his shoes should last another six months at least.
I started to walk home. I then realized that when I left, my dad’s motorbike was not there. I wanted to cry. I ran home as fast as I could.
When I got home, my dad was there waiting for me. I couldn’t help crying. I hugged him tightly and said, “I’m sorry, Dad. I don’t need a bike.”

He puts his own thumb through the hole. The blood is red ink, I believe. Is the story worth a cup of coffee, sir?” “But he holds the box in his right hand.” “Yes, but listeners look into the box.
