Shi Qinling, a paper-cutting artist, always brings a pair of scissors which allows her to create art whenever she has ideas. Most of her paper-cutting works are from moments in daily life, such as a neighbor’s dog, her own pets and scenes on the streets. “Some people like to write down their feelings in diaries. I prefer to cut them out,” says the 35-year-old, who is now working at the Fenglin community cultural activity center in Shanghai.
Shi developed an interest in handicraft (手工艺) when she was a child who often found herself alone playing with paper, folding and cutting them into different shapes. This interest later developed into a passion (酷爱). At the age of 26, one of her works, The Fighting Fish, won third place at the Baihua Cup, a competition for Chinese arts and crafts. Six years later, Shi became the city’s youngest inheritor (继承者) of paper-cutting.
Over the past few years, Shi’s works have been showed in 23 exhibitions. Shi and her workmates are now planning to produce cultural and creative goods to attract more people to learn paper-cutting. Today, more and more young workers start to show an interest in paper-cutting. There are now more than 100 people working on a Shanghai paper-cutting project, which hopes to promote folk arts.
“We are very proud to have this special folk culture and art project. And we should protect this cultural art form,” says Shi. “Paper-cutting is not about cutting different patterns from paper. Writers tell stories using words. I do the same, but with a pair of scissors,” she says. She takes paper-cutting as not just an art form, but also a form of learning about traditional Chinese culture.

Lesser Cold is one of the coldest solar terms of the year. However, the bitter cold can’t prevent people from enjoying their lives. There are many interesting activities for people to do.
In China, wintersweet (腊梅) comes out at that time. People often go where they can admire the beauty of wintersweet together with friends. It’s also a good time for people to skate, fight with snowballs and build snowmen.
Among all these activities, the most important one is preparing for the Spring Festival.
Some people make decorations like paper cutting and couplets (对联) on their own. Others begin to store (储藏) new year goods (年货). During the period of Lesser Cold, the so-called “new year taste” is around every corner of the street.

Understanding Africa
When Huang Lizhi took her first class in African sociology at the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa in February, her professor asked her and her classmates what impresses them most when it comes to Africa.
Unexpectedly, Huang, 31, found that words like “poverty” and “safari”—negative words that were often associated with the continent in media reports—were the kind of terms her African classmates didn’t want to hear. Instead, they preferred to hear the question answered in this way: “Africa is the cradle of humankind” and “Africans are passionate and generous”.
Apparently, there are some misunderstandings between us. It’s true that with incidents like the Ebola outbreak in Western Africa and the emergence of pirates off the coast of Somalia hitting the news, it’s easy for us to keep forgetting that Africa has one of the world’s oldest civilizations—Egypt, born by the world’s longest river, the Nile. The proof is in the Great Pyramid of Giza and the Great Sphinx of Giza, which are both popular among tourists. And the tombs of ancient Egypt have also become endless sources for the literature and film industries.
When it comes to the natural environment of Africa, our misunderstandings are only bigger. But the truth is that instead of being scorching hot all year and covered by desert, the continent has large areas of savannas where lions, giraffes and zebras live, the snowcapped Kilimanjaro—the highest mountain in Africa—and even thick forest on the island of Madagascar.
These misunderstandings are one of the reasons why the 2018 Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation was held on Sept 3 and 4—to understand each other better.
Indeed, only by visiting Africa herself did Huang see the convenient living conditions, the amazing natural beauty and the friendly people.
In her eyes, her classmates were as hopeful about the future of their own countries as they were about Africa as a whole, and they were quick to demonstrate both their strong will and initiative.
“At that moment, I knew exactly what they wanted—they wanted their culture to be respected.”

Shadow puppetry is a form of theater that uses puppets made from leather(皮) or paper, accompanied(伴奏) by music and singing. Invented during the Western Han Dynasty(206 BC-AD 24), it tells us about folk stories and historical stories, passing down culture and customs over thousands of years.
Shadow puppetry is all about creating the puppets and performing with them. Wang’s hometown of Hua county, Shanxi, is known as the birthplace of the folk art.
Puppet-makers must follow 24 steps to make the puppets, including washing the leather, carving(雕刻), and painting, according to Wang. Carving is the most difficult part. ”We have a special carving technique(技巧) —moving the leather under the knife,” Wang said. “You have to hold the knife still in your right hand and only move the leather in your left hand.” It took Wang three years to master this skill. She used a brick(砖块) to strengthen her left hand while practicing. It takes about 3,000 carves to make a shadow puppet. “The complicated(复杂的) steps make it hard to hand down the folk art,” she said.
But Wang has found a way to do so. In 2016, she made shadow puppets based on the cartoon series HuyaoXiaohongniang(《狐妖小红娘》) and gave a live performance. She used colors like blue and purple that are seldom seen in shadow puppetry and added more sticks to the puppets to make the performance more lively.
