Sam, a foreign student, often shares his experiences of Chinese culture on his vlog.
In one video, for example, Sam shared how he had learned the Chinese word “dongxi”, he translated each part separately into “east west”. And he introduced how “dongxi” came to mean “things”. He told people that all marketplaces in ancient Chinese cities were set up along a single road that ran from east to west. So when you would say “qu mai dongxi”, you’d be saying, “I’m going to buy things.”
He posted some other videos of reading Chinese poems and performing Kungfu in Chinese traditional custom. They were quite welcomed by more than 40,000 followers.
“Many of my followers are learning Chinese”, Sam said. “But sadly, they know little about Chinese culture and the country.” Like many foreigners, Sam once believed that all Chinese could perform Kungfu, flying onto roofs and walking over walls. He thought the country was not developed. But after he got a scholarship to study in China in 2019, his view about China changed. “China has entered a new period, but many people’s impressions of China are still stuck in the 1970s,” Sam said. “That’s why I started to shoot vlogs to share Chinese culture in 2019.”
Until now, Sam has posted more than 40 Chinese culture vlogs online. Though shooting these vlogs is not easy and takes lots of time, the young man feels proud. Sam said that he wanted to continue bridging the differences between two cultures. “This goal may not be achieved easily, but I will spare no efforts to do my part.”
1. What does Sam often share on his vlog?2. How were marketplaces in ancient Chinese cities set up?
3. How many followers does Sam have?
4. When did Sam’s view about China changed?
5. What’s Sam’s goal of shooting vlogs?

Let me tell you a story to explain the reason. Once upon a time, there was a bad monster (怪兽) named Nian. On the Eve of the New Year, Nian would come up from the sea and eat the villagers. People were very afraid, so they all hid in their houses. One New Year’s Eve, the monster came again. The villagers hid as usual. The monster went to the first house. Suddenly it heard a loud noise: BANG! BANG! BANG! The noise made the monster afraid. And it saw fire and red paper around the door. It ran away quickly.
Nian never came again. The villagers led a happy and safe life. From then on, people always put red couplets on the door, wear red clothes, set off firecrackers and keep the house bright on New Year’s Eve every year.

On Saturdays, Wang Wei puts on a play with his friends in a small village near their university. The villagers can hear them, but they cannot see them. That is because they are putting on a shadow puppet play(皮影戏).
Shadow puppets(皮影木偶)are made of hard leather(皮). The leather is cut out in the shape of a person or an animal. Each puppet is painted in bright colours and put on a stick. Some puppets have arms and legs that can move.
During a shadow puppet play, Wang stands behind a white screen with lights behind it. The villagers sit in front of the screen. Wang and his friends hold the puppets very close to the screen so the villagers can see the puppets’ shadows clearly. Then they move the puppets around and do the voices of the different characters.
Shadow puppet plays are an ancient Chinese art. Now with TV and films, shadow puppet plays are not as popular as before.
Wang and his friends, who are actually members of the school Drama Club, often work very hard for little money, but they do not mind. They want to keep this traditional art alive.

Beijing Opera appeared in the Qing Dynasty. In 1790, many opera troupes (戏班) went to Beijing for performances to celebrate the birthday of Emperor Qianlong. This kind of unusual performance touched the hearts of the people deeply. While in Beijing, the troupes created a new kind of opera called Beijing Opera. It was on the basis of Anhui Opera by taking in the advantages of other operas.

We all had big ideas about our future when we were young. But these days, when we are busy with school and exams, we seem to forget them. However, young singer Xu Haofei turned her big idea into reality. “I've always wanted to sing and create a fairyland(仙境)with my music, where everyone can find love.” said Xu. Her first CD, Imagine the Color of the Wind, came out on October 16. Famous music producers Zhang Yadong and Xu Xiaodong made it. She wrote one song for the CD herself, A Butterfly’s Antennae.
Xu has been dreaming of being a singer since childhood. While she was waiting to grow up, she poured all her feelings into writing. She hoped it would take people to a fairyland. When she failed to get into high school, she decided to go to Beijing to become a singer. She didn’t know anyone in the music business but she believed one day she’d make it. “It was my writing that opened the door,” she said. “Miracles(奇迹)can happen, but the most important thing is to believe in yourself.”

In the past ten years, the use of social media has grown in a way that no one could have guessed.
A main feature( 特征) of social media is its volatility(易变). Trends(潮流) come and go, disappearing almost as quickly as they appear. So, what were the main social media trends of last year?
Short video apps, such as Tik Tok and Douyin, took the world by storm. The Telegraph reported that Tik Tok was the 8th on Apple’s App Store in April. And Douyin had more than 300 million active users June in China, CNBC said.
The sense of community that users of short video apps get is another main feature. Liza Koshy, a user of the US app Musically who has over 2 million followers, said that she was very excited when anyone said that her video had “encouraged” them. “It’s really cool...because I think as social creators that’s what we all are,” she added.
Live streaming(直播) is a feature of our social media life that now seems as natural as sunrise.
It’s a pretty good idea—you can watch anyone, anywhere, live.
China has taken live streaming to a whole new level. More than 100 million Chinese people monthly watch a live streaming video. Forbes thought that a number of reasons had led to the popularity of live streams. On of the most important reasons is that people don’t have to know their real names.
Although we use social media all the time, that doesn’t mean that we understand the influence it is having on us. We should pay attention to both the time we spend on it and its influence on our minds.
1. What were the main social media treads of last year?2. In which country were there more than 300 million active users in June?
3. How did Liza Koshy feel when her videos helped others?
4. How many features of social media were mentioned in the passage?
5. What is one of the most important reasons that had led to the popularity of live streams?
