EMERGENCY? WHAT EMERGENCY?
An emergency service (紧急服务) should be like that: a service that you phone in an emergency. You might need to call the police if you’re in a car accident. But some people phone the emergency services for some unimportant reasons (原因). _________
Here are some examples we heard about from emergency centres all over the world.
①I ordered food from a Chinese takeaway and it didn’t come. I’m so hungry! Can you tell them to hurry up, please? ②My children are making such a loud noise and I can’t think about things. _________ ③There’s a black cat in my garden. Black cats are such unlucky animals. Can someone please come and take it away? |
These calls are funny to read about, but they can have very serious consequences (后果). “Every call takes about a minute,” said one man who works in emergency services. “Maybe that doesn’t sound a very long time, but in that one minute, other people are calling who really have an emergency. And for them, a minute might be really important.”
So let’s get really serious: _________ And of course, remember that you should never phone them with information that’s untrue!
A. And it’s hard to believe these calls are real!
B. THINK before you call the emergency services.
C. Can you give me his telephone number?
D. Can you come and take them away, please?
1.
2.
3.
4. When can we call the emergency services?

Have you heard of TED? TED represents Technology, Entertainment and Design. TED is a set of meetings, held in different cities around the world every year. With different speakers—also from different parts of the world—all the speeches are uploaded (上传) to their websites, for everyone to see.
TED meetings invite speakers to give speeches on different kinds of topics. The speakers usually have success in their fields and talk about new ideas and recent development that are important to their work. The speakers are also well known. There are many talks on environment, international development and aid work. There are a number of talks about education as well. As there are many kinds of topics, all speakers have a strict time limit—each speech must last less than 18 minutes.
Nowadays, www.ted.org, the organization’s website, is where the many interesting talks become reachable to everybody who has an Internet connection. Every weekday, a new video is uploaded from a TED event, allowing people from around the world to listen to the talks for free. At only 18 minutes, even if the video is no that interesting, you know you are not going to waste too much time.
Most TED talks are in English but there are talks in other languages, too. Charity is big business: in 2020 about 410 billion yuan was raised for charity in China. But every year there is more suffering in the news. Sometimes it feels like people ask us for money everywhere we go. With so many charities, how can they get enough money?
Charity is not a modern idea. Over the years people have found new and interesting ways to get the money they need. In 3500 BC King Hammurabai of Babylon encouraged(鼓励)his people to share their wealth with their poorest neighbours. For thousands of years, the world’s main religions(宗教)have encouraged people to do the same. In the1970s more and more people had televisions, so charities made films of suffering(受苦)children and brought the world problems straight into people’s homes. The 1980s was a time of big business, so charities became more business-like: they made money by making and selling everything from Christmas cards to summer holidays!
In the 1990s, famous people like Claudia Schiffer and Michael Jordan made millions of dollars for big international companies like Citroen and Nike. So charities started using famous people too. During the 1990s Sting planned music events for the Rainforest Foundation. With help from other singers, he earned more than $10 million to help protect the lives of people living in rainforests.
Today, charities are using the “personal touch” to earn money. People give more when they can see their money working in the area they live in, and when they have a personal relationship(关系)with the charity.
Some people never give to charities. They say that their money cannot mend these world-wide problems. This is true, but most people know that a little help is better than none. Look more closely at charity work and you will see that each person can do something to make our world better.

The Palace Museum has begun to build a new branch (分支). The branch museum, located in Xiyuhe Village in Beijing’s Haidian District, will cover 620,000 square meters with a total floor area of 102,000 square meters. Exhibition areas, space for cultural relic (遗迹) repairing and storehouses will cover 35,000 square meters, 20,000 square meters and 23,000 square meters separately. It will also include 9,500 square meters of space for digital public communications and a 2,500-square-meter visitor service area.
The branch museum for large cultural relic exhibitions is expected to welcome 3,000,000 visitors a year.
According to Shan Jixiang, the former director of the Palace Museum, the branch museum will present a series of exhibitions with characteristic themes and show visitors efforts to repair the relics. “Having such a new museum will improve our service and enlarge our room to display our collections,” he said. The lack of enough exhibition space has been a lasting problem for the Palace Museum, which houses about 1,860,000 cultural relics. The need to provide a safe environment for the collections has meant that only two percent of the museum’s treasures can be displayed to the public at the same time. “It’s currently impossible to display the collections of large items in the Palace Museum, but the branch will offer good conditions to put them on display,” Shan said.
Red and yellow-two colors that were often used by royals in the Palace Museum-are featured in the branch museum. It is also designed to be eco-friendly and energy-saving to match the natural environment.
The branch museum will fully open in June 2022. When completed, it will become an important stop on Beijing’s cultural tourism routes, which also include the old Summer Palace, the Badaling section of the Great Wall and the Ming Dynasty Tombs. It is said that the branch museum will be an important site for cross-cultural communication and help to make Beijing a global city in the future.

Every spring, the Spanish city of Seville becomes one of the Europe’s largest orange yards. There are about 50,000 orange trees on its streets and squares. Therefore, they have become a tourist place in the city. However, these oranges also bring a lot of trouble to people’s lives.
People eat a few of them. In fact, the fruit usually gets in people’s way. Those fallen oranges make the streets dirty with juice. The government has to hire (雇佣) people to collect them. In the past, a small number of oranges were made into juice. They were also used to make wine. Most of them, however, ended up as rubbish. Now, this is about to change.
The government has tried to make full use of these oranges to produce electricity. Machines press the fruit and store the gas that is produced by the juice. The gas will then be used to produce electricity.
“It’s not just about saving money,” said Benigno Lopez, the head of the government. “The oranges are problems for the city and we’re creating added value from waste.”
The project starts with 35 tons of oranges. Each ton of the fruit can produce 50 KWH of electrical power, which is enough to meet the needs of five homes per day. On its first successful try, it can provide power for 150 homes in total. There would not be enough fruit to provide electricity for the whole city, but if all of Seville’s oranges were used, they would create enough electricity to power 73,000 homes.

Chopsticks are usually two long thin pieces of wood or bamboo. They can also be made of plastic, animal bone or metal. The most important thing is that chopsticks are a great invention in China.
Five thousand years ago people usually cooked their food in large pots, using twigs(小树枝)to remove it. As the population grew, people began cutting food into small pieces. Food in small pieces could be eaten easily with twigs by people. And twigs were gradually changed into chopsticks.
Some people think that the famous scholar Confucius living from about 551 BC to 479 BC pushed the development of chopsticks. Confucius believed that using chopsticks instead of knives would remind people to stay away from killing and violence at table.

Talk to your teacher. A short discussion can clear up the clouds between two persons. Always be kind and show admiration (钦佩). Express (表达) yourself and show the ideas from your heart.
Ask your teacher how you can do well in class. Teachers have years of education and experience in his teaching subject. Learning more about this fact helps make a good relationship between you and your teacher. Discuss the best ways to succeed (成功) in class, and this shows your teacher that you care about the class.
