What do the following animals have in common? Pandas, tigers, whales, lions and camels (骆驼)? They are all in danger!
Animals are in danger for many reasons. Sadly, people’ s activities are some of them! Here are three reasons.
Excessive hunting (过度猎杀). For centuries, people have hunted elephants and tigers for money, and caught many other animals for their meat. So many wild animals leave the world at last.
Foreign animals. In 1505, Europeans found a beautiful island in the Indian Ocean named Mauritius. They brought dogs, pigs, monkeys, and mice with them. It was bad for dodo birds. Dodo birds did not have any natural enemies (敌人) before. They picked up fruit falling down from trees and built their houses on the ground. Shortly after people came, however, dodo birds were in big trouble—people caught them for their meat, and those animals broke their houses and ate their eggs. The number of dodo birds first became less. In the end, they all perished and the last dodo bird lost its life in 1681.
Loss of home. People cut down forests for farming. They cut down trees to build houses. They build pools to make sure that they have enough water to use. However, they don’ t pay attention to protecting the environment. When they are trying to make their lives comfortable, the land for animals to live on becomes less and less.
Animals are people’s good friends. People should learn to protect nature and get on well with animals.

We all need a healthy environment, but we produce waste every day and it often results in lots of pollution. In fact, even the simplest everyday activities can make a difference to the environment. Here are some ideas for you.
Reduce. It means “use less”. It suggests people should produce less pollution and throw less rubbish. People should reduce waste by buying fewer things. So before we are going to buy a new thing, try to think whether it is really necessary for us.
Reuse. Reuse means “use again”. It asks people to use things as long time as possible. When we buy things, guarantee that we really need them and we can use them for a long time. We should value them so that we can use them for a longer time. And if we can, we should repair (修理) them instead of throwing them away and buying new ones. Don’t use a paper cup or a paper bag. If we can use a china (陶瓷) up or a lunch box, we are doing something green and helpful.
Recycle. Recycle means “use in a new way”. Many people encourage people to recycle things. Look at these examples. People often recycle old or waste electrical things and try to create some new things with some parts from the old ones. Second, some people try to make some bags with old clothes. At last, people often clean the house or water plants with used water.

However, the Amazon rainforest is in danger now. A large fire happened there. It lasted for 22 days and ended on August 27, 2019. In fact, there are a large number of fires in the rainforest this year. Between January and August, there were over 74,000 fires. Most of the fires came from people’s activities. Farmers in the Amazon rainforest use fire to prepare for planting for many years. But what they do is dangerous because these fires can easily get out of hand.
By now, the fire has been put out. But scientists say it will take about 20—40 years to build the forest’s ecosystem(生态系统) again. The fire also burned plenty of trees. Without trees, many animals lost their homes because of the fire, such as monkeys, birds, sloths and so on. The Amazon river is also polluted. Air is not clean any more. The Amazon rainforest is our home. Let’s protect it and repair(修复) the ecosystem together!

In each spider web, some threads are sticky, but some are not. When a spider is moving on the web, it will not step on the sticky threads. After a time the silk will lose its stickiness and become unable to catch insects. Then, spiders usually eat their own web.
Now a team of scientists has worked out why the spider web is so strong. It is not just the strength of the thread, but the clever design of the web. “The key to a web’s success is its ability to keep its shape and strength even after some of the threads break,” said scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (麻省理工学院). The scientists found the thread itself has the ability to become softer or harder. So it can hold different types of heavy things.
In tests, scientists used three other strong materials made into the same webs. The spider thread was six times stronger than any other material. More surprisingly, when the scientists took away up to 10 percent of the threads from different places, the web didn’t become any weaker. Actually, it became up to 10 percent stronger.
The spider web’s clever design gives scientists many new ideas. The findings could help design safer buildings and even a new type of strong material. “It’s a really good chance,” said Markus Buehler, a professor at MIT.” It may give us some new ideas for engineering.”

It has a special meaning that is different from the usual meaning. For example, “under the weather” is an idiom meaning ill. So when people say “I’m under the weather”, they are saying that they’re not feeling well. Another example, “in all weathers” means “in all kinds of weather”. So, “There are homeless people sleeping on the streets in all weathers” tells us that homeless people sleep on the streets no matter whether it is cold or hot.
Different languages may have different ways to make idioms. For people who are learning a foreign language, idioms could cause misunderstandings and bring them endless headaches. On the other hand, if things are done right, idioms can also be a fun way of looking into a new culture and understanding how the people think and talk.
Metaphor (比喻) is often used in idioms. Let’s read the following two examples:
●It makes my blood boil (煮沸) when people litter (乱扔).
●The night was dark and quiet; my blood ran cold when I heard a strange noise outside at dark night.
In neither situation above, our blood can reach the point so high or so low in temperature. Yet, with the situations the two sentences created, it is not difficult to work out the unhappy feelings of really angry in the first example and very afraid in the second.
Of course, not all idioms are this easy to understand. When we come to idioms of a foreign language, a good dictionary of idioms is always suggested.

D.We should create situations to guess its meaning. |
A.Positive. | B.Negative. | C.Neutral (中立的). | D.We don’t know. |

On October 16, the ministry of education(教育部) said that all high school entrance exams (中考)should include fine arts testing by 2022. And 12 cities in six provinces have started the practice. The scores change from 10 to 40 points.
This news has caused heated discussion. What will it mean for students? We invited two teenagers to share their ideas.
Zhao Xin, 14, Beijing
I’m in junior 2. we have a music class and a drawing class every week. Sometimes, the teachers show us movies about famous painters or musicians, telling their encouraging life stories. Studying music or fine arts is never a stress to me and the tests are only about what we’ve learned in class. What’s more, we have open-book exams in my school. Most of my classmates will get over 90 out of 100 points. I don’t think these subjects will be too difficult if they’re included in the high school entrance exams.
Zhao Hanfang, 15, Yunnan
I study in a village school. Our school doesn’t have separate music and art classroom. Every Friday, students from several classes will have music class in our library hall. With so many students, the teachers can’t check everyone’s singing in each class. It’s really hard for tone-deaf(五音不全) people like me to remember the melodies(旋律). So I need to do extra practice before the test, and I feel worried. So if music is included in the high school entrance exams, I might be under much pressure.

Scientists looked for paw prints(爪印) in the forests. In this way, they knew the number of pandas! “It’s hard to see pandas in the wild,” said Colby, a scientist. “They hide in the thick bamboo forests. “That’s why scientists used paw prints to get the number. The number of the pandas was a surprise to Scientists. They learned that more pandas lived in the wild!
“We found pandas living in areas we didn’t know,” said Colby. Although the news is good, pandas are in danger.
Here are some fun facts of pandas:
It takes a panda more than 10 hours to eat 9 kg to 14 kg of bamboo every day.
A newborn panda weighs 90-130 grams. That is about the weight of a mouse. A panda’s front paws have wrist bones(腕骨). The panda uses them to catch bamboo.
The main threat to pandas is that their land is becoming smaller and smaller. Pandas lose their land when people cut down parts of the forest for wood and farming. Now, China has13 nature reserves(保护区). People mustn’t cut down trees there. Scientists want to create more nature centres to give pandas a better chance to live.

A foreign student is studying at a university in Jiangxi Province. One day, she could not help singing a song when she saw thousands of Siberian white cranes (西伯利亚鹤) dancing on the Poyang Lake. Each year, these cranes start their long journey from Siberia to China.
The Siberian white cranes are also known as the snow cranes. They are in danger of dying out. Now there are only about 4,000 Siberian white cranes all over the world. Experts (专家) say the Siberian white cranes are special. If they are hurt in one place, they will never go there again. Chinese researchers first discovered the Siberian white cranes in the Poyang Lake in 1980. Now, about 98 per cent of such cranes spend their winter there. Their migrating route (迁徙路线) is well protected. In 2017, a photography lover, together with many bird lovers, built the Siberian crane protected area. It’s for scientific research, education and photography. It’s known as “human’s closest place to Siberian cranes”. Every year, these beautiful cranes fly to this area.
The birds know whether (是否) the natural environment is good or not. They are like “ecological (生态学的) test paper” for the environment. We should protect the beautiful birds.
1. What is Siberian white cranes’ migrating route every year?A.From China to Siberia. | B.From Siberia to the UK. | C.From Siberia to China. |

But in the 1960s, they began to disappear because of pollution and other human activities. In 1981, Chinese scientists found seven of them in the wild in Yangxian, Shaanxi Province. They were believed to be the last ones in the world. But now, they have been saved from extinction.
Researchers say its population has risen to more than 5, 000 around the world. There are 3, 000 crested ibises in Yangxian alone. The birds’ survival (幸存) is because of China’s early protection efforts, according to Zhang Yueming, an expert who helps protect the birds in Yangxian.
On the fourth day after finding the ibises, the local government put up a lot of notices to protect the birds. Then, it stopped people from cutting down trees. Later, it set up the Qinling No. 1 protection station and sent four people to look after the birds day and night. During the daytime, they watched and recorded the birds’ habits and conditions. At night, their job was to keep them safe.
To help the ibises have more babies, a rescue and breeding center (救助和繁育中心) was set up in 1990. At the center, crested ibises are fed by people and can receive timely help when they are sick or hurt. China’s protection of crested ibises is an example in the world's history of protecting endangered wildlife.
