Wu Yishu, a 16-year-old student from Shanghai, won a Chinese poetry (诗) competition in the second season of the Chinese Poetry Conference on Feb 7th, 2017. She beat other competitors because of her learning about Chinese culture and works. “I get feelings from ancient poetry that modern people cannot give me. I pay little attention to the competition result, but I love poetry, and it is enough as long as I enjoy the happiness brought by the poetry,” Wu said.

In the final, Wu performed strongly in many parts, such as competitors recalling poems by looking at sand paintings and reciting (背诵) poems about the Chinese character “Jiu” as many as possible.

As early as Feb 1st, when Wu recited an ancient Chinese poem about the months of the year, someone said that Wu must have remembered at least more than 2,000 Chinese poetry. Wu’s strong performance in the Chinese ancient rhythm works earned (赢得) her many fans and inspired (鼓舞) others to learn ancient works. The 1.8-meter tall Wu said that she kept only one ancient poetry book on the bookshelf at her dormitory room instead of other books such as math, physics and chemistry books that her classmates have kept on their bookshelves.

She is known among her classmates and teachers as she loves reading poetry and wearing ancient Chinese clothes.

Recently, a father called Daming and his son Dongshun’s photos became hot all over China. In the photos, while they are working on the boat on Dongting Lake, lots of fish are jumping into the fish bin(鱼舱).

Dongting Lake is the second freshwater(淡水) lake in China, it’s home to nearly 400 kinds of fishes. But in the past, people threw litter and factories put waste water into the lake. Even worse, a large number of fish were caught by fishermen. Because of pollution and overfishing (过度捕捞), the Yangtze River was in great danger. For example, the Chinese paddlefish(中华白鲟) disappeared 2 years ago. Daming used to make a living by fishing near Dongting Lake. However, life was gradually becoming difficult for Daming and other fishermen. The more times they went to fish, the fewer fish they could get.

In January, 2020, the government called for a 10-year fishing ban(禁渔令), covering 332 conservation areas(保护区) in the Yangtze River. Dongshun has worked with his father as a lake ranger (巡湖员) for almost 3 years. This job helps him understand how important it is to protect Dongting Lake. “I think this job is meaningful.” he said, “As the wind is blowing gently, fish are swimming happily. What a beautiful scene! The fishing ban will lead Dongting Lake to a better future.”

【推荐2】Billy Smith loves water. His hobbies are swimming and diving (潜水). And he likes golf too. Billy’s a very lucky man because his interests are part of his job.

Billy lives in the USA with his wife, Linda. They got married ten years ago. At that time, Billy worked in an office in New York. He worked with computers. He worked five days a week, from eight in the morning to seven in the evening. He hated his job. There was no time for diving or golf. Linda worked in a shop and she didn’t like her boss (老板). She hated the cold winters in New York too. So Billy and Linda decided to leave their jobs in New York and buy a house in Florida. The weather is fantastic in Florida. The days are sunny and hot.

Now Billy goes diving every day and he goes to golf courses (球场) every day. But he doesn’t play golf very much—he works at the golf course. He travels around Florida and he goes to lots of different golf courses. Sometimes Linda goes with him and sometimes she stays at home. There are lakes on many golf courses and Billy only goes to golf courses with lakes. Players often hit their golf balls into the water.

In his new job, Billy dives in the lakes for these golf balls. On some days, Billy collects two thousand golf balls. Linda has an office in their home and she works there. She sells the lost golf balls that Billy finds. For golfers, they are cheaper than new golf balls.

I’m a rather smart person who has spent nearly 10 years learning mechanics(机械学), but I have no formal education. I have always struggled to make people trust me.

This year, I started another factory job, which provided a bit higher pay than my last one. I was making $13. 50 an hour at my last job and hardly make a living. I felt I would probably live a better life! My neighbor bought a used Harley motorcycle that everyone thought it had some serious damage. After taking a look at it, I said that I would be able to repair it. As a result, I saved them $2, 000 that they expected to pay to rebuild it. They were impressed with my work and told many of their friends about me. I got a lot of new business just through word of mouth.

In about two months I had over a dozen people coming to me for work and I was making great money. I was making thousands a month from part-time jobs on a good month. But because of the instability of the work, it was not certain for me to get enough money every month, I still couldn’t leave my day job at that point.

Then I got a job through one of my customers working on heavy equipment and diesel trucks (柴油汽 车). I was able to impress them by solving difficult problems quickly. They offered me another job that started even higher - $17 an hour. I finally made some progress.

In one year’s time I went from being the lowest level worker to having bosses ask me to work for them. Now I can honestly say I feel truly proud of myself and my skills.
