My older cousin Charlie was always up for an adventure. Then, one day, he had a snowmobile accident that changed his life. The doctors said that he might never walk again. Charlie said they were wrong.
Charlie is a big guy who is more than six feet tall and weighs 260 pounds. His size, along with his black hair, makes him look strong. He likes to wear tight T-shirts to show off. These days, Charlie is wearing baggy clothes to cover up the scars (伤疤) on his legs. It was hard to move around with his crutches (拐杖). The doctors aren’t sure when or if Charlie will ever fully recover (恢复).
For me, the best thing about Charlie is that he doesn’t give up easily. In the beginning, when Charlie was in hospital, he pushed himself hard to practise walking again. When the doctor told Charlie to take a break, my cousin would say, “No way, man! I want to do this now.” Charlie kept pushing himself. Before long he was getting around pretty well without any help. However, I know Charlie.
He’s not going to stop until he can walk without his crutches.
Before the accident, Charlie liked riding his snowmobile and his motorcycle. These days he’s finding other ways to keep active. When the whole family got together during vacation, Charlie couldn’t play on our pickup football team. That didn’t stop him. He did a super job of teaching. My cousin Charlie has taught me two important lessons. First, I realize I should check out all the safety rules before I try something dangerous. Second the best way to get through bad times is to have the right attitude (态度). Charlie’s attitude is just as strong as he is. I believe that someday Charlie will walk the way he did before, just like he says he will.

Once he told four of his students to go to a small farm to see apple trees in different seasons. The first student went in winter, the second in spring, the third in summer, and the last in autumn. After the four students came back, the teacher called them together. They described their feelings to the teacher. The first student said that there were no leaves on the tree. It made him very upset. The second student said his eyes were full of light green. It made him feel hopeful. The third one disagreed, “What are you talking about? How pretty the trees were! The sweet smell of the beautiful flowers spread everywhere.” The last one shook his head. He only saw a lot of apples on the beautiful trees. The teacher smiled and told his students that none of them were wrong. They each just saw one season. He continued,“The trees are not the same in different seasons. You can’t judge a tree by only one season. Don’t let the regret of one season destroy the beauty of the rest.”
Everything has different sides in our life. Don’t hurry to make a conclusion before seeing the whole of it.

In the past 3 years, we have travelled over 70,000 kilometers around Australia. We have seen forests and beaches together. This year, we spent three months in the desert. I’m happy to go back to the beautiful beach, but I’m not sure what Willow thinks.
Some people were surprised to find that I was travelling with a cat. I remember that once a backpacker (背包客) at a campsite shouted, “Excuse me, there is a cat trying to get into your van!”
I know. The van, a tiny house on wheels, is our home. I built it by myself with a bed, cupboards, a kitchen—and plenty of places for a little cat to hide! It might be small, but the whole Australia is our garden.
Willow enjoys exploring the places she has never visited, but she doesn’t like to go too far from our van. She loves to sit on the dashboard (仪表盘) to enjoy a great view. I put our photos on the Internet and look forward to hearing from people all over the world who are following our adventures.
We are lucky. We always have each other and the whole Australia to see. I will treasure the memory for a lifetime. If Willow has taught me anything, it is that happiness doesn’t require much. A bit of food, shelter and a whole lot of love will be well enough.

Remark for Flight CF4168
Dear passengers, Here is the remark board(留言板) of this flight! To provide you a better flight experience, we warmly welcome your remarks here. | |
I’ve been a doctor for almost 20 years, and it is my first time to give a remark here, for I really want to record this touching experience! When our flight was about to land and all passengers were required to be seated well, a teenage boy with Down syndrome(唐氏综合症) suddenly became very nervous because of the sense of weightlessness(失重感), and he left his seat and lay down on the ground. Though the crew(空乘人员) asked him to go back to his seat for several times, the boy didn’t move at all. His parents also tried many ways to comfort him, but it still didn’t work. It seemed that nobody could help. As a result, the plane had to circle above the airport, which made some passengers very impatient and angry. Minutes later, a lady, said to be a teacher, stood up, and slowly walked to the boy. She lay down beside him, smiling to him. “Hey, boy! Are you looking for something on the ground?” No reply. “Did you have a good time during the flight?” No reply. “Are you afraid of something?” The boy turned to her… I didn’t hear what they said very clearly, but later, the boy went back to his seat happily. Doctors always treat their patients with medicine, but facing with the boy, I felt so helpless. However, a teacher made it! Edem | Actually, it is the worst flight I have ever taken! I felt very angry about it! I didn’t know why the airplane circled over the airport for such a long time. All the passengers had to sit still to wait for nothing! I am so busy today, and my business partners are waiting for me for lunch? Why do I have to waste time here? Tim |

Clint Liddick was born in the United States. At the age of 13, he weighed 113 kilograms and was considered overweight. To search for a sport that interested him, he chose a local kung fu school run by an American Chinese teacher. He lost 23kg after practicing kung fu for a few months.
“It’s a sport that needs a wonderful balance between body and brain. You have to really work hard at it to do the movements correctly,” said Liddick.

For Liddick, studying kung fu isn’t just about mastering the movements. It is also about meeting people, having conversations to share experiences, or simply hanging out with people. He helped build a library in a primary school in Yibin in his free time. What’s more, he decided to help build some kung fu schools in his country in the future.

When I was 14, I left school. I was on the way to California to follow my dream.
When I reached downtown El Paso (爱坡索市), I met a bum (流浪乞丐) on the street corner. He stopped me and asked me if I was running away from home. I told him, “Not exactly, Sir,” because my father had given me a ride to the train station and said, “It’s important to follow your dream, Son.”
After talking for a few minutes, the friendly bum told me to follow him. He took me to a public library at last.
The bum first took me to a table and asked me to sit down and wait for a moment. A few moments later, he returned with some old books and sat beside me. Then he said, “There are two things that I want to teach you, young man, and they are these: Number one is to never judge a book by its cover, for a cover can fool you.’’ He continued, “You think I’m a bum, don’t you, young man?”
I said, “Well, uh, yes, sir.”
“Well, young man, I’ve got a little surprise for you. I am one of the richest men in the world. But 1 realized there were certain things I had not yet experienced in life. So for the past years, I have been going from city to city living as a bum. So, you see, don’t ever judge a book by its cover.”
“Number two is to learn how to read, my boy. There is only one thing that people can’t take away from you, and that is your wisdom.” At that moment, he showed me the old books.
The bum then took me back to the street where we first met. He asked me to never forget what he taught me when we left each other.

One person said “money”. I didn’t know what color that was, maybe green, but I wasn’t sure, so, I didn’t give it a color. Two people said love didn’t have any color. Two other people said love was the color of the rainbow. That’s a nice thought. Now only 3 people chose red as the color they thought of as love. This surprised me, since that is the color used most on Valentines’ Day (情人节). I guess passion doesn’t necessarily mean love. There was a tie of 4 each for white and yellow. I can understand wanting a pure love (white) or a wise and happy love (yellow). Pink is the choice of 5 people who I think need beauty in their lives. Six people said either lavender, lilac (紫丁香) or violet was the color of love. I think all of them want some magic and mystery in their love lives. Green was the color chosen by 7 people as the color they thought of as love. These people must want a balanced love and maybe some money too.
The most surprising answer was that 14 people picked blue. I think these people may know about love. Love should be sincere and true. Maybe if you have “the blues”, it is because you don’t have love. Most blues music is about lost love. Maybe blue is the color of love. I just can’t see sending a blue heart to my lover next Valentines’ Day.
This little survey is not scientific, but it is very interesting. Did you know not all people dream in color? Well, I hope everyone makes sure to daydream in the most wonderful and wild colors possible.

Life is full of experiences. We can always remember the ones when we first did something. When I was in Grade 5, I was told to take part in an English writing competition. I was too nervous to speak when the teacher reported the news to the whole class. In order not to let my teacher and my classmates down, I trained myself very hard for the hope of being the winner of the competition.
I tried my best to learn as many words as possible. I spent all my time training so that I was able to memorize a lot more words, sentence structures and grammar rules as well as reading articles. The complete change seemed kind of strange in some all my classmates’ eyes.
The big day finally came. When I first saw the topic of the competition, a sudden feeling of nervousness came to me. At that moment, I realized I had no choice (选择) but to calm down (平静下来). Then I took a deep breath, and began to think up ideas about the topic. I quickly wrote down the structure, main ideas and other necessary words and phrases. As the finishing time was near, I tried my best to write more quickly. Unluckily, I didn’t complete my writing because I did not plan the time well.
The result came out two weeks later. To my surprise, I got the second prize. All my classmates cheered for me. Even though I was not the first prize winner, I could still feel pride and happiness spreading around me.

A 9-year-old girl now can play the violin by herself thanks to the kindness of a classmate’s father.
Valerie Romero was born with only one hand, so she had trouble playing the violin on her own. Recently, Nate’s children came home from school and told him about Valerie and how she needed help.
Nate, an engineer, knew he had to find a way to help. He looked at his tools and asked his friends for help. “I talked to them at work. There is an instrument holder that can work perfectly, and I bought it online.” Nate said.
The next step was to make a working prosthesis (假体) around the instrument holder. “I did some research online and found out what to do, but I didn’t have the tools, so I did the next best thing. When I was in the army, there was something called thermoplastic (热塑性塑料) and that would help.” Nate said.
As Valerie grows, she will need a new prosthesis. But for now, it’s working perfectly. Valerie is good at playing the violin and she even played with her classmates at the holiday concert last month. “I just think this is amazing,” Valerie’s teacher Ruthie Price said. “For this little girl, it’s really something.”
