Hey, hey, it’s your scientist pal Tania here. Today’s topic is…drumroll please…the human body!

Human bodies can seem weird sometimes. After all, your body didn’t come with instructions. No wonder a bunch of you sent me so many questions about it. Well, read on, curious human beings! I’ve got answers for you.

What are toes for?

Toes aren’t just weird little things that stick out of our feet. They do most of the work of keeping our balance. Toes act like teeny pegs. They dig in and make sure we stay upright when the going gets wonky.

But wait, there’s more! Ever tried to walk only on your heels? If so, you know that toes also put the spring in your step. Here’s how that works: When you raise your heel to start a step, your toes bend. That stretches your foot like a rubber band. As you finish the step, your stretched foot snaps back to normal. That springs your body forward to the next step.

When you run, your toes bend even farther. This creates a super spring that sends you soaring through the air!

Yup, toes let humans walk, run, and even fly. Well, for a few seconds, at least.

Why are babies so cute?

It’s not easy to care for a baby. Their diapers get stinky, and they cry a lot. And yet, they’re just so cute, right? Well, guess what? Their cuteness is the superpower that makes us take care of them!

Babies grab us with their powers of cuteness. We love to see a cute baby, hear it gurgle, or even smell its tiny baby head. And that’s great for babies. They need our attention.

But what do we get out of it? Well, we smile and get a warm and fuzzy feeling around babies. That feeling comes from chemicals that flood into our brains. Even when babies are smelly, loud, or sticky, those chemicals still flow. The chemicals make us happy, and that gets us to care for the baby’s needs. Both the needy baby and our happy-hungry brains win!

How come my belly makes that weird noise when I’m hungry?

It’s the middle of the school day, and your belly suddenly starts growling. It sounds like angry lions are fighting in there! But it’s just the strong muscles in your gut doing their jobs.

After you swallow some delicious food (mmm, like a juicy apple), your stomach soaks it in liquids called acids. These acids break food down into a gloppy goo. Your stomach’s muscles then pound and mix the goo for hours. They rumble around like a washing machine. Finally, your stomach calls it quits. It sends the goo into your small intestine. For several more hours, your small intestine groans. That’s because it’s squeezing all the good stuff out of that goo.

You can’t hear these noises when your stomach is full. But when your stomach is empty, it’s like a giant echo chamber. You get the very loud hint that your stomach has run out of food. And so does everyone around you!

Speaking of food, I keep thinking of apples now. I’m off to snack on one. I hope everybody enjoyed this! I’ll be back soon with more answers about the world around us.

Until next time, stay curious!

When she returned my paper,I was shocked. There was a big red X through each of my answers. I had failed. There had to be some mistakes!(A)我确切地记下了老师说的。Then I realized that everyone in the class had failed. What had happened?

She had given the animal a ridiculous(荒谬的)name, and we still believed her words were right.

(C)The zeroes on our papers would be recorded in her grade bookshe said. And they were.

【推荐3】Answer the questions(根据短文内容回答下列问题)

I was a freshman in college when I met the Whites. They were completely different from my own family. Jane White and I became friends at school, and her family welcomed me like a long-lost cousin.

In my family, it was always important to place blame(责备、责怪)when anything had happened. From the time we were little, my sister, brothers and I told on(告发)each other. The Whites, however, didn’t worry about who had done what. The beauty of this was driven home to me the summer Jane died.

In July, the White sisters and I decided to take a car trip from their home in Florida to New York. The two older sisters, Sarah and Jane were college students, and the youngest, Amy, had recently turned 16. Proud of having a new driver’s license, Amy was excited about practicing her driving on the trip.

The big sisters shared the driving of Sarah’s new car during the first part of the trip, but when they reached less crowded areas, they let Amy take over. Amy got behind the wheel. She came to a crossroads with a stop sign. No one would ever know whether she was nervous or just didn’t see the sign, but Amy didn’t stop at the crossroads and a large truck ran into our car.

Jane was killed at once. I was slightly injured. The most difficult thing that I had ever done was to call the Whites to tell them what happened. Painful as it was for me to lose a good friend, I knew that it was far worse for them to lose a child.

When Mr. and Mrs. White arrived at the hospital, they found their two daughters sharing a room. Sarah had a few cuts on her head; Amy’s leg was broken. They hugged all and cried tears of sadness and of joy at seeing their daughters. They wiped away the girls` tears and made a few jokes at Amy as she learned to use her crutches(拐杖).

To both of their daughters, and especially to Amy, over and over they simply said, “ 5 . ”

I was astonished. No blame. No accusations(控诉,指责).

Later, I asked the Whites why they never talked about the fact that Amy was driving and had run a stop sign. Mr. White said, “Jane is gone and we miss her terribly. Nothing we say or do will bring her back. But Amy has her whole life ahead of her. How can she lead a happy life if she feels we blame her for her sister’s death?”

They were right. Amy graduated from the University and got married several years ago. She is now a mother of two little girls of her own, the older named Jane.
