Education is not just about going to school. it’s also about what you learn from your experiences outside of school. So family and community (社会) play a great role, too.
On January 13, the government gave a guideline (指导方针) to improve school-family-community cooperative (合作的) education mechanism (学校家庭社会协同育人机制). It clarifies the roles and responsibilities of school, family and community and how they work together to educate children.
“School-family-community cooperative education asks the three parts to well work together to help the all-round development of students,” Zhang Zhiyong, a teacher at Beijing Normal University, told China Education Daily.
According to the guideline, schools should play a leading role in cooperative education. They should deeply close communicate with parents to let them know about the student’s performance at school. They should also organize at least two activities each term to offer family education guidance to parents. Also, head teachers need to organize a home visit to each student at least once every year.
Parents also play a key role in family education. They should be encouraged to lead their kids to take part in different activities like volunteering, doing sports or getting job experience in their free time. The community, on the other hand, for example, should be free to school students.
Gao Wei, a 43-year-old mother of a 14-year-old from Beijing, was excited about the new guideline. “Improving cooperative education” between the school and parents is not a new thing. But the guideline brings clear advice to make it happen. With such support, they can learn more from real life.”

We might pick building toys for boys and kitchen toys for girls. But why do we do this? Are boys and girls really born with different interests in toys?
No, they are not. Children start to show different interests in toys at age three, but only because at this time, they begin to learn about gender(性别) and to follow what others of their gender do. If you give a girl kitchen toys, she will think they are girls’ toys because she sees other girls playing with them. But if you give a girl a toy car and show her a group of girls who are playing with cars, she’ll play with the toy car and think it is a girls’ toy. This “watch and follow” habit often becomes a rule for both boys and girls in choosing the “right” toys.
However, this rule can be bad for children. Different toys teach children different things. Dolls help with their early language use, and building toys are good for learning math and science. By playing with different toys, children can find out what they are interested in or what they are good at. If they only play one kind of toy, they may lose this important chance. They may also get a wrong idea about what boys or girls are able to do. Some doctors worry that children may use the same kind of thinking when they look for jobs in the future. If they do, they may miss something more important than just getting a chance to play with different toys. They may miss many, perhaps better, chances in life.

On a middle school playground, a group of boys and girls are dancing to pop music with smiles on their faces. The idea came from their PE teacher, Miss Wang, who is trying to encourage her students to exercise more. And she is not alone. Now, more and more PE teachers across the country are coming up with new and fun sports activities.
In 2021, the Chinese government came up with a plan called “double reduction” to reduce the pressure on students. The plan reduces the amounts of homework, exams, and after-school classes. It also focuses on sports and fitness to solve the health problems of students.
Under the latest government rules, students in primary and junior high schools will have daily PE classes during the next 10 years. They can choose from different sports, like football, basketball, running, rock climbing, and skateboarding.
Insufficient (不足的) exercise can lead to health problems for young people. In 2021, Zhao Wenhua, a health expert, discovered that almost 20% of Chinese students aged 6-17 were overweight or obese (过度肥胖的). Added to this, according to the Ministry of Education, myopia (近视) in primary, junior high, and senior high school students had increased by 11.7% from the end of 2019 to June 2020. These problems are believed to be connected to students not doing enough exercise.
With these things in mind, it’s important for not only schools but also parents to organize and guide children to take part in more sports activities. This will help avoid myopia and obesity as well as reducing the pressure on students.
