In the northeast of Italy, Venice is known as a floating city, but Venice is not one single island. It is made up of over 100 islands connected by waterways and bridges.
Water is a big part of life in Venice. The boat is the most common way to travel. You can see a traditional boat called a “gondola” in Venice. Unfortunately, water puts Venice in danger. Salt water is slowly damaging the bases of Venice buildings. So Venice is sinking.
Each winter, the flood makes it worse. But these worries will pass with a new program. Venice is in the middle of the Lagoon with three natural gaps to the sea. Rain and strong winds make seawater travel through the gaps. They have built dozens of gates to hold back the sea. Each of these gates is 20 meters wide and 30 meters long, and the gates will be raised to separate the city from the sea. But only time will tell if this project is right.
However, if you want to visit Venice, you have to be earlier. The international atmosphere is making Venice become a normal city in recent years. The motor speedboat is replacing the gondola. More and more fast food canteens like McDonald’s are on the small streets instead of traditional glass-making shops, mask shops and potty(陶器) toy shops.

Citywalk not only offers a way for young people to connect with a city but also provides them with new social looks, where people who share the same interests and ideas can easily make friends. Many tour guides also try to increase their influence online, sharing their experiences for the in-coming tourists.
Xiao Yiyi is a tour guide in Changsha. Recently she made six Citywalk routes (路线) in different cities on her WeChat, with the aim of providing experiences for visitors to “walk in open-air museums.” Her route includes less popular sights like historical buildings from the 19th century, old art streets, and even a stop-off to taste special city foods.
Some regions (地区), such as Beijing and Shandong, have included Citywalk in their plans to market cultural tourism and time-killing tours. Zhang Zhi, a tour guide from Beijing says Citywalk makes it possible to provide personalized travel services, and that’s what more tourists need.
Shanghai has set up Citywalk routes using public bus routes to help day-trippers reach less available parts of the city by public transport and continue on foot.

There are at least 3,000 miles (about 4,828 km) of waterways in Britain. On these canals(运河) and rivers, there are over 30,000 “houseboats” — boats that people use as homes. Around 10,000 of them are located in London.
Houseboat communities are typically(典型地) made up of people who are looking for a slower way of life and who want to be in touch with nature.
Living on water sounds romantic(浪漫的), but it is hard work.
There are daily things that need to be done, like bringing fuel and water on board and dealing with “waste” water from the kitchen sink(洗碗槽), shower and toilet. In winter, living on a boat can be very cold and there is always a feeling of being wet. Of course, most boats are quite small inside, so you don’t have much space, especially if you are a couple, family or group of friends.
Despite(尽管) these difficulties, the number of people living on Britain’s waterways has increased by around 50 percent over the past ten years. This is not only because they like the idea of life on water but also because it is much cheaper to buy or rent a boat than a flat or a house.
There is a great sense of community on the waterways. Houseboat neighbors often become friends for life. This is quite a different story from people who live in flats or houses and may hardly know the people next door at all.
1. What can we know about houseboats in Britain?A.There are about 10,000 houseboats in total. |

We know that there is air all around the world. And we could not breathe without air. Airplanes could not fly without air. They need air to lift their wings. Airplanes can not fly very high because as they go higher the air gets thinner. If we go far enough away from the earth, we find that there is no air.
What is the sky? Nothing. Where is it? It is all around the world. The sky is space. In this space there is nothing except the sun, the moon and all the stars.
The moon is about 384,000 kilometers away from the earth. An airplane cannot fly to the moon because the air reaches to an altitude of only 240 kilometers. Then there is no air. But there is something that can fly even when there is no air. It is a rocket.
How does a rocket fly? If you want to know, get a balloon and blow it up, until it is quite big. Do not tie up the neck o f the balloon. Let go! The balloon will fly off through the air very quickly. The air inside the balloon tries to get out. It reaches out through the neck of the balloon and this pushes the balloon through the air. It does not need wings like airplane.
1. The sky is full of ________.A.air | B.dust | C.stars | D.cloud |
---Within ________.
A.420,000 kilometers | B.1,000 kilometers | C.240 kilometers | D.2,000 kilometers |
A.as high as an airplane | B.higher than an airplane |
C.not so high as an airplane | D.as far as 240 kilometers |

Like a lot of middle school students, Zhuang Shuxia has a problem. She and her parents don’t get on well.
“I really want to be my daddy’s little girl. But it feels like he just doesn’t understand. He would just tell me things and doesn’t listen.” said Zhuang, a Junior 3 student in Shijiazhuang, Hebei.

Zibo city in Shandong has unexpectedly become famous since late February for its barbecue(烧烤), and this continues as the government takes the chance to promote(推广) tourism and spending in this city.
The latest promotion gives visitors chances to visit 10 places of interest in the city for free with their train tickets as long as their final stop is Zibo. The Jinan China Railway added a weekend special round-trip “barbecue tour” train between Jinan and Zibo. Passengers who get on the train are greeted by a notice reading “Welcome to the Special BBQ Train”. Many also took videos and put them online drawing(吸引) more visitors.
Barbecue is popular in China, but Zibo’s barbecue is different: it’s made on a stove(炉子), and is served with pancakes and dressings(调料).The food is 70-80 percent cooked before it is brought to the table, where diners can finish cooking it on their own stoves. Diners are served with pancakes and other dressings at the table so they are able to put dressings and other ingredients in the pancake, in the same way Peking Duck is eaten.
The barbecue suddenly became famous after a group of college students shot videos of themselves enjoying a meal in Zibo and put them online in late February. Since then, many people, mostly young, have come to the city from all over the country to try the dish. On several streets, lines can be seen outside barbecue restaurants, which stretch(延伸) for more than 100 meters on the weekend.
“Zibo barbecue is bringing more and more people to the city, and the government needs to think about how to promote the city as a whole, its culture and tourism, as well as its living and business environment,”said Sun Xiaorong, an expert of tourism marketing and promotion. The trend(趋势) will finally end if the government doesn’t take proper follow-up actions, he added.

【推荐3】A great wonder of the natural world
When I arrived, it was early morning and it was raining. I looked to the east—the sky was becoming grey. I got out of the car, went through a gate and walked along a dark path. There was nothing to see, but I knew it was there.
After about a mile, a stranger appeared beside the path. “Am I going the right way?” I asked. He knew where I was going. “Yes,” he replied, “you’ll get there in five minutes.” Finally, I came to some rocks and stopped. I looked over them, but it was silent and there was no sign of it. Suddenly, the rain stopped and the clouds cleared. The sun rose behind me and shone on the rocks. Far below me, the ground fell away and down to a river. I was looking across one of the wonders of natural world—the Grand Canyon.
I looked down to the Colorado River, a silver stream nearly one mile below me. If you put the two tallest buildings in the world on top of each other at the bottom of the canyon, they still would not reach the top. Then I looked across to the other side of the canyon. It was about fifteen miles away, maybe more. Finally, I looked to my left and to my right, and on both sides the canyon went far away for more than 200 miles. The Grand Canyon was not just big. It was huge!
I remained by the canyon for about half an hour, and I asked myself, “Is the Grand Canyon the greatest wonder of the natural world?” I certainly know the answer. What do you think?
