Ants are everywhere. They live in forests, fields, deserts and cities, all over the Earth. But how much do you know about them?

Ants are social animals. They live and work in groups. They always build nests, find food, and raise babies together. They have their own colonies (群体). Ant colonies are large or small, from just a few ones to millions!

Usually, ants are divided into (被分成) several different classes (等级) such as queens, workers, males and so on. Queens are females and they eat more as larvae (幼虫). Queen ants are usually the biggest ants in colonies. They lay all the eggs. A queen ant can live for several tens of years. Males have wings and they never help with the chores. They can only live for a few weeks. Workers are females and they eat less as larvae. Workers do all the “housework” from building and cleaning the nest to collecting food. Workers are wingless and usually live for several months.

Ants are also clever architects. They can build their homes in different places. You may find their nests under rocks or in the trees. What’s more, the nests that they build are perfect for ant larvae to grow up. One ant by itself cannot do much harm to many larger animals. But they can beat much bigger and stronger enemies in large groups. By acting together, ants can even protect their colonies against animals. If you are lucky enough, you may see such a wonderful fight!

Ants are successful in the animal world. But have you learned the secret behind their success?

【推荐1】A lot of animals travel from one place to another. We call this migration.

In Africa, large animals, like elephants and zebras, migrate to find food and water. They usually follow the same ways every year.

A lot of birds migrate to find food and better weather, too. They are usually birds that eat insects. They spend the summer in northern Europe, because there are lots of insects there. In the winter there aren’t any insects, so the birds fly south to southern Europe and Africa.

Some insects migrate, too. In North America, millions of monarch butterflies fly south to spend the winter in Mexico, California and Florida, where it’s warmer. They travel 50-65 km each day and they travel about 1,125 km.

Some fish migrate to breed. Salmon can swim over 20,000 km in their life. They are born in rivers in Ireland, Scotland and other places in northern Europe. The young fish swim down the river to the sea and into the Atlantic Ocean. They live in the ocean until they are adults.

Then they return to the river where they were born. They lay their eggs in the river and then they usually die. Salmon do this because their eggs are safer in the river. Other fish can’t eat them.

Arctic terns travel the furthest when they migrate. They spend the summer in the Arctic, but when winter comes they fly to the Antarctic, because it’s summer there. The next year they fly back to the Arctic again. In one year these small birds travel 36,000 km from one end of the earth to the other and back again.

Nobody knows how they do it.

文章大意:本文向我们介绍了一些关于蚂蚁的事情。

【推荐2】Ants (蚂蚁) are kind of like humans, because they live in big “ant cities”. In the ant cities, thousands of ants work together to build homes, find food and so on. Each ant city has a queen, and she mainly lays (产) eggs. In these ant cities, there are special rooms for keeping food and taking care of baby ants. Some ants have to pick up all the rubbish from the city and bring it outside the city. Do you think all that rubbish might be too much for a little ant? Even though they are so small, ants can carry some heavy things.

The door to their underground world is what we call an “anthill (蚁丘)”. The anthill is made up of sand and dirt. In the middle is a little hole through which the ants can climb down into their underground city. Imagine trying to organize such a thing! You’d think that ants must be very good communicators.

The interesting part about ants is that they can’t talk. But this doesn’t stop these little animals. Ants communicate by sending out different chemicals (化学物质) from their bodies for other ants to smell. For example, if an ant finds a piece of food, it will send out a kind of chemical that says “there is food here”. The other ants will follow their noses toward the food until it is all gone. If there is something perilous around, ants will send out a kind of chemical that says “stay away”. Each city of ants has its own special smell. This way ants can tell if there is danger.

So next time you see ants, stop and think about how amazing these little animals are and what their lives are like.

【推荐3】Here is an experiment (实验) to see how ants can organize some clever teamwork.

1. First you need some ants. You may have to wait until the summer to find them on paths around your home.

2. When you have found an ant, put a thin slice of fruit in front of it. It may eat some of it or carry bits away.

3.Check the fruit after an hour. Have other ants been attracted to it? If so, what are they doing?

4. When there are lots of ants, move the fruit to a new position a little to the side. What do the ants do?

What’s going on?

You can see one of the best examples of insect teamwork by watching ants. If one ant finds food, it leads others there to eat it too. They follow each other by making long trait. The ants go back and forth collecting food, to take it back to their nest (穴). When you move the fruit, the ants will still find it. But instead of making a new direct route (路线) to the food, they will follow each other through their old trail route.

1. What will happen if one ant finds food?
A.The ant will eat all the food.B.The ant will watch other ants.
C.The ant will lead others to the food.D.The ant will wait until others come.
