Last summer, I went to Spain on business alone. After three days’ meeting, I had a trip there. The trip took me through a beautiful desert. I was quite excited. I shared a car with four other people. At one point, I was sitting in the front seat and it was getting really hot in the car. Our driver only spoke Spanish, and I spoke wonderful Spanish, too—or at least I thought I did. “Estoy caliente!” I said, looking right at the driver. To my surprise, instead of opening the window, he only looked at me in surprise. I thought perhaps my New York accent (口音) made him confused.“Estoy caliente!” I said again, this time in a more local-sounding accent. He looked even more confused.
Suddenly, a native Spanish speaker in the back seat spoke up in English, “Umm, I guess you want to tell the driver you’re beautiful, right?”
I was so embarrassed. My face turned bright red. I explained what I meant to him in English. He laughed loudly. He talked with the driver in Spanish, and everyone else in the car laughed. Of course, the driver opened the window in the end.
After the journey, I shared my story with my daughter Helen. She laughed, “Mom, I must study hard in order not to make mistakes like yours! How embarrassing!”

Thanks to the Belt and Road Initiative(一带一路), my mother’s university has a Polish Research Center. I got to meet a boy named Tomek. He came to China with his mother from Poland(波兰) this summer vacation. We were so excited to meet each other. He found it interesting to learn Chinese and Chinese culture. I even taught him some Ningbo dialect(方言). It was a fun experience for me.
Then I began to wonder how these two countries, thousands of kilometers apart, are able to be closely linked today. My mother told me it is because of the Belt and Road Initiative. More than 2,000 years ago, Chinese people explored and opened up routes of trade and cultural exchanges. This was called the Silk Road. In 2013, President Xi Jinping came up with the idea of building the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road. It is a great project.
I live in Ningbo, which is s starting point for the maritime Silk Road. I want to to go to other countries taking part of the Belt and Road Initiative, including Russia, Pakistan and Poland. I want to make many friends like Tomek from these countries. I want to bring Chinese gifts to foreign friends and tell them stories about China. Also, I want to see the beautiful views around the world.

I still remember when this day started, I was very happy. But after only 40 minutes of driving around the city, I was very bored. I couldn't read my book in the car as I would get carsick(晕车)and my dad didn't like to turn on the radio. I got hot and uncomfortable. People wouldn't get into his taxi because they thought he already had a passenger: me--so nothing happened. It seemed years before we went out for lunch. In fact, I started to miss the school.
Although the purpose of the day is to give kids a chance to experience possible jobs in the future, I got something completely different from the day. I learned to value school life. Where else can you play with your friends, do science experiments and read great books all in one day?
You'll have to learn to love your job later in life, so learn to love school now. If you don't, try spending the day at work with your dad.

I did not pass the boys’ basketball tryouts(预选赛) in seventh grade. Making the team was very important to me, but my name was not on the list.
On the way home, I was both angry and upset. “I can’t believe I didn’t make the team,” I said loudly. “How did Alex make the team? He is so slow that he can’t keep up with a tortoise (乌龟)! Why is Jimmy a better choice than me. He just stands around moving his arms!” “Adam!” my mom said, cutting me off. “Why don’t you just stop and think? Maybe you need a little more practice.”
Suddenly, I knew she was right. It was nobody’s mistake but my own. I decided to work hard for the team over the next year.
I practiced hard every day and had lessons every week. When summer came, I took part in lots of basketball camps. Through camp after camp, my abilities grew, and I knew I was ready for tryouts in autumn.
The day finally came. As everyone crowded around the lists, I played it cool and waited for my chance to read the names. I slowly looked down at the list. Not only was I on the list, but my name was the first! If at first you don’t succeed(成功), try, try, try again.

If you are interested in polar exploration, you must have heard of Roald Amundsen, the first explorer to reach the South Pole.
Born on July 16, 1872 in Norway, Roald grew up with his other three older brothers. His father, a businessman in the shipping industry, died when he was just 14. The teen had dreamt of becoming an explorer, but his mother wanted him to become a doctor. He followed his mother’s wish until she died when he was 21. Then Roald left school to go after his dream of exploring.
His adventure on a Belgian research ship in 1896 was his first real polar exploration. When the ship got trapped(使陷入困境)in ice, the people on board were forced to spend winter in terrible conditions. But Roald used his skills to find fresh food, and showed himself to be a capable explorer. This was perhaps one of the most important experiences that would lead to him becoming an Arctic(北极的)explorer.
Roald had planned to be the first man to reach and explore the North pole. However, hearing that Robert Peary had already reached there, Roald changed the plan and decided to go to the South Pole. In January 1911, Roald’s ship arrived at the Bay of Whales in Antarctica. His team set up camp there and prepared for the trip to the South Pole. They used sled dogs instead of horses and redesigned the sleds they would use. The team set out to reach the South Pole months later. At first, they traveled quickly, but soon they had to pass over mountains and avoid dangerous crevasses(裂口). Finally, after nearly two months of hard traveling, on December 14, 1911, they reached the destination. The exploration took 99 days and the team traveled over 1,800 miles to the pole and back.
