Rick was a young boy who was angry at everything around him. To calm Rick down, his mom came home with a canvas (画布) and paint.“Whenever you feel bad about something, paint it instead of getting angry.”
Though not that happy, Rick gave it a try. After creating many paintings, he took his artwork to his mom.
“Tell me, Rick. What are these paintings about?”
“The first is about how some kids show off their new clothes. The next is about my teacher who always tells me about how I’m doing things wrong. And the last painting is about how one of my schoolmates said I should change my attitude (态度). They all make me so angry.”
Rick’s mom took Rick by her side and told him, “Don’t you see, Rick? You’re getting so angry but you never try to understand why.” Then she explained carefully, “All the people you were angry at did nothing wrong. The kids were shoving off their good clothes but never laughed at you for being poor. Your teacher scolded you but that was because you caused trouble in class. And your schoolmate was only trying to help you correct your mistakes.”
“Next time you get angry, take a deep breath and walk away for a couple of seconds. And when you come back, talk to the person you’re angry at. You might calm down in this way.”
Rick took his mom’s advice and became less angry. He even started to feel happy around other children.

My fifth grade teacher was Mr Smith. He knew I loved drawing. One day, I had to do a speaking book report on Beverly Cleary’s The Mouse and the Motorcycle. I was afraid of speaking in class. I tried hard to give the book report, but did a terrible job.
Mr Smith gave me another chance. The book had some wonderful illustrations (插图), but not many. There were a lot of pages with no pictures. “Listen, Tony, “ he said, “I want you to read the book again. This time, I want you to draw your original (原创的) illustrations for the book.”
So with pencil in had, I went back and re-read the book. And now it didn’t seem like a story anymore. It became instructions for me to draw different scenes (场景). After I finished the reading, I was very excited to share my report with the class. I felt a confidence that I had never experienced before.
This experience changed me a lot. I started to read all kinds of books. I would draw my versions (版本) of the characters from the books. I drew Smaug the dragon from The Hobbit. Milo from The Phantom Tollbooth and more. I put these drawing on the walls of my room.
Later, I became a writer and illustrator. I love my job and have been doing for more than 30 years. I’ve always been thankful to Mr Smith. He was an amazing teacher—he helped me get to where I am today!

The professor had said they could bring any book or note they wanted, but they could not talk to each other. They went into the classroom happily. The professor gave them the papers. They smiled when they found that there were only five questions.
Three hours passed and the professor began to collect the papers. The students no longer looked so confident . The professor faced the class. No one spoke. They just held papers in their hands.
The professor then asked, "How many of you finished all five questions?"
Not a hand was raised.
"How many answered four?"
Still no hand.
"Three? Two?"
The students looked worried in their seats.
"One, then?" Certainly somebody finished one.
However, nobody replied. The professor put down the papers. "That is just what I thought," he said. "I just want to tell you that, even though you have finished four years of engineering, there are still many things about the subject you don't know. The reunion would take place in a large public park in the late afternoon because it wasn't too hot at that time. Each family would bring their own food to eat. Usually each family had a special dish that would be shared. Some families would bring potato salad while others would bring a dessert or self-made special drinks. There was always more than enough food.
Almost everyone would play games. Younger people played softball, football, volleyball and so on. However, Uncle Sam always taught Cousin Chris and me to play badminton. CMs and I went to the same school and we kept beating other players and won several state games. The older family members would sit under a tree and watch the games or just sit around and talk. Everyone enjoyed himself / herself because it was a good chance to catch up on what his / her relatives were doing that year.
Those family reunions are the best memories I have of my childhood. Today it seems that everyone is too busy to hold or attend family reunions. Now, no matter how nostalgic I feel about those family reunions, those memories remain very clear in my mind.

I think it started on the night my boyfriend and I went to celebrate his sister-in-law's birthday. We didn't think anything of it at the time, of course. The news was just beginning to report the spread of COVID-19 in America. I was still living my life just as I always had — riding the train to work each day, working long hours, and going out with friends and family.
My boyfriend, Luis, began showing symptoms on Monday, but we thought it was a typical cold. Then it took me down. It began with a low fever. I felt really weak. At this point, coronavirus had begun to take over New York. On Tuesday, the headache started. It was so intense that I had to lie down. By the end of the week, everything hurt. Luis and I went to nearby urgent care. After being examined, I chose to be tested, but I didn't receive my results until a week later. The doctor sent me home with advice to take Tylenol (泰诺, 感冒药) but said there was nothing more he could do for me. On the way home, we bought whatever medicine we could find, for the store had run out of Tylenol.
That Saturday evening was the worst. I had a high fever and I couldn't sleep. I was sweating a lot, and my knees, hips, and back were in terrible pain. I lost my sense of taste and smell. Then I developed stomach pain.
As I lay there, I was terrified that there wouldn't be enough doctors, nurses, or beds to help me. The thought of being alone, and possibly dying alone, in the hospital, weighed heavily on my thoughts, and I feared the uncertainty.
My fever finally broke the following Wednesday. It was such a relief. Two days later, the health department called me with the news that I'd tested positive for COVID-19.
Looking back, I really wish that people had taken this virus more seriously earlier. I wish people understood how severe this is. I'm wearing a mask in public from now on. I'm not taking chances. This was really painful, and we got lucky.

One day, he gathered up all his courage and decided to attend a job interview. His appointment was at 10:00 a.m. and it was already 8:30. While waiting for a bus to the office where he was supposed to be interviewed, he saw an old man kicking the tyre of his car. Obviously there was something wrong with the car. Denson immediately went up to lend a hand to him. When Denson finished repairing the car, the old man asked him how much he should pay for the service. Editor Pete Muir said the survey had looked at a variety of factors from gym membership to heart disease rates to find the fattest city. “Manchester has more fast food restaurants than anywhere else in the UK,” he told Reuters. “People are taking the easy choice—eating and then just sitting in front of the TV.”
Manchester’s problem is part of a wider trend. On Thursday, the Office of National Statistics (ONS) blamed a lack of exercise and poor diet for a fifth of adult Britons being obese (过度肥胖的). “Obesity is a major risky factor connected with heart disease, diabetes and premature death (糖尿病和早亡).” said an ONS survey. “None of the 108 young men in the survey reported eating five portions of fruit or vegetables on average each day.”
In Manchester, the head of the city’s public health programs said he did not believe that they were necessarily the fattest city, but that they did have problems and were aiming to address them. Social deprivation (贫困) was a major factor. “One of the myths is that the stressed-out rich businessman is the one who is overweight,” David Regan told Reuters. “In fact, it is the poor areas that have the most problems. We aim not to be the fattest but the fittest city but we have a long way to go.”
Second in the survey is Stoke-on-Trent, followed by Liverpool, Swansea and Lecicester. Glasgow is sixth.

There are three kinds of food in our life. Let’s look at them now.
The first are starchy (含淀粉的) foods. These should be about a third of our total daily food intake. They are an excellent source of energy and include bread, potatoes and rice. In fact, starchy food doesn’t gain our weight. And the scientists say starchy foods contain less than half the calories of fat. The second is fat. We need some fat in our diet as a store of energy, but sadly most of people in the Western world eat too much fat. This result is in weight gain. Fat should form no more than 35% of your total daily intake. The third is sugar. Most of us are eating too much sugar. Eating too much sugar is harmful to our health and it may make us fat. And a survey from Britain shows that the amount of eating vegetables is falling. Stop eating too much sugar and eat more vegetables from now on! |

One important thing of our growth is to make decisions to help our friends and learn to support each other. This requires us to learn what it means to help friends and how to help them in right ways.
The first step toward helping others is to identify that they need help. We all know that difficulties are part of our daily lives. It’s important to make sure when to help a friend. For example, you may pick up some signs that your friends are not acting like themselves. These signs show they may not be well. Of course, sometimes small things can lead to more serious problems that require more help, because you and your friends can’t solve them. Then turning to a parent or a teacher is a good choice.
The next step toward helping others is to listen. Paying attention to others while listening is very important throughout our life. As listeners, we should try to understand what the speakers are feeling or experiencing and try to see things from their views. Listening and paying attention to others when they speak is a sign of respect and a skill.
The last step toward helping others is to give advice at a proper time. When we communicate with others, we need to learn when to speak and when not to. Sometimes being listened to is enough for your friends. They just want someone to understand them and listen to them. It’s not necessary for them to get any advice. If you have some advice, you should make sure that your friends really need it.
