A classmate stood inside the door and asked several questions before letting me in. Then we changed roles and did it again,” Liu Lei said. “We learned a lot while having fun at role-playing. ”

“Socializing is just as useful as more traditional kinds of mental(脑力的) exercises in boosting memory and intellectual performance,” Oscar Ybarra, a psychologist at the University of Michigan Institute for Social Research, said in a statement.
In one investigation (调查), they analyzed data on 3610 people, aged 24 to 96.
They find that the higher their level of social interaction (交流), the better their cognitive(认知的) functioning. Social interaction includes getting together or having phone chats with relatives, friends and neighbors. In another experiment, the researchers conducted laboratory tests on 76 college students, aged 18 to 21, to evaluate (评估) how social interactions and mental exercises influenced the results of memory and intellectual performance tests.
The students were divided into three groups: the social interaction group had a discussion of a social issue for 10 minutes before taking the tests; the mental activities group completed three tasks (including a reading comprehension exercise and a crossword puzzle) before the tests; and a control group watched a 10-minute film of the Seinfeld television show.
“We found that short-term social interaction lasting for just 10 minutes improved the students’ intellectual performance as much as working on so-called ‘mental’ activities for the same amount of time,” Ybarra said.
The study was expected to be published in the February issue of the journal Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin.

【推荐2】Do you still remember the debate (争论) between sweet and salty zong zi during Dragon Boat Festival? It seems that the differences between northerners and southerners have always been a popular topic among Chinese.
Now another difference has drawn wide attention: The way northerners and southerners shop for food at markets.
People from southern China might say they prefer to buy what they need for just one or two meals. It is normal for them to buy just half a Chinese cabbage, two potatoes and 0.25 kilograms of beef at a time.
However, one may be laughed at if he does this in the north. Instead, buying vegetables and meat enough for a week is usual, reported China Daily.
Also, when you go to the market in the south, you can buy a small amount of fruit, such as an apple or pear. Shop owners even help you peel (削皮) and cut them. But hardly do shop owners in the north offer such service.
The difference could be because of the different climate.
Food can be kept for a long time in the north, as it is usually cold and dry there. Many northerners have the habit of stocking up (囤货) on food.
But because of the hot and wet weather in the south, southern Chinese prefer to buy just enough food for one meal or one day. Otherwise, the food may go bad.
Maybe these debates about differences help us Chinese know more about each other.
1. The story is mainly about ________.A.the debate between sweet and salty zong zi |
B.the different food at southern and northern markets |
C.the differences between southerners and northerners |
D.the different shopping habits of southerners and northerners |

For a start, all the information in a story must be correct. Not only the spelling and grammar, but also the facts.
Any mistakes that show up in a story can get a newspaper into big trouble.
For example, if a newspaper said that Yang Liwei was the first man to go into space, it would be wrong. He wasn’t the first. The newspaper would probably lose lots of readers because of that mistake.
A news story does not only have to be correct, but it must also be relevant to its readers. People are mostly interested in news that happens near to them. That’s why you care more about what happens at your school than at schools in America. It’s also why newspapers in Beijing don’t talk much about news in Shanghai or Hong Kong.
Make sure it’s fresh.
Finally, news must always be fresh. When you pick up your evening newspaper, you want to read about news that happened that day. You don’t want to read about news from last week!
So, now you know what makes a good news story. Have a look at our paper and see if it’s full of good news! You can try writing a news story for our paper like a real reporter.
