To most people in the Netherlands (荷兰), bicycle riding is part of everyday life. It’s their first choice to school and work. In cities like Amsterdam, people take almost 70% of all the trips by bike. Why does cycling become popular in the Netherlands?
In the 1970s, the Dutch government (荷兰政府) began to improve its cycling facilities (设施) because many people wanted a much safer cycling condition for children. To make cycling safer, the Dutch built the widest cycling network in the world. The country marked over 40,000 kilometer lines just for bicycles. They have traffic signs and signal lights for cyclists.
Even when both bikes and cars have to share the same road of little space, you can always see a large board saying “Bike Street. Cars are guests”. It means that riders have priority (优先) over drivers. For example, cars must slow down and let bikes pass first if they run face to face.
Bicycle parking facilities are quite common in the country. The central train station in Groningen, a city in the north eastern part Netherlands, has underground space for parking 10,000 bikes.

In a modern city, there are many ways for you to choose (选择) when you go travelling. If you are busy, you can take a taxi. Taxis don’t need to stop often on the road. And the driver can take you anywhere you want to go, but it is too expensive. Of course you can also choose to take the subway. It is safe and quick and you don’t pay a lot. When you aren’t busy, you can take a bus, so you can enjoy the scenery (风景) of the city on it.
If you want to get some exercise, travelling on foot or by bike may be good for you. Walking can make you healthy and it is very cheap.

In a great many cities, hundreds of people ride bicycles to work every day. In New York City, some bike riders have even formed a group called "Bike for a Better City". They claimed that if more people rode bicycles to work there would be fewer automobiles in the downtown section of the city and therefore less dirty air from car engines.
For several years this group has been trying to get city government to help bicycle riders. For example, they want the city to paint special lanes (车道)—for bicycles only—on some of the main streets, because when bicycle riders must use the same lanes as cars, there may be more accidents. "Bike for a Better City" feels that if there were special lanes, more people would use bikes.
But no bicycle lanes have been painted yet. Not everyone thinks it is a good idea. Taxi drivers don't like the idea—they say it will slow traffic. Some store owners on the main streets don't like the idea—they say that if there is less traffic, they will have less business. And most people live too far from downtown to travel by bike.
The city government has not yet decided what to do. It wants to keep everyone happy. On weekends, Central Park—the largest open place in New York—is closed to cars, and the roads may be used by bicycles only. But "Bike for a Better City" says that this is not enough and keeps fighting to get bicycle lanes downtown. Until that happens, the safest place to bicycle may be in the park.

But bad eating habits go beyond fast food. We find many teenagers have bad eating habits. Some don’t have breakfast before they go to school. During the day, some don’t have a proper meal for lunch. In a recent survey at one school, scientists found that over two-thirds of the students didn’t follow a healthy diet. They didn’t like vegetables, and many of them didn’t like to eat fruits. It’s like when your friend gives you a pen as you search your pockets, or when a classmate leaves his seat to help you pick up your book as it falls onto the floor. Researchers say these small acts of kindness are common and are found in all cultures.
The study found that people usually agreed to the requests (请求) and were happy to help others they knew. However, it did not focus on kindness between strangers.
Helping others is a general part of human nature. The researchers studied videos of more than 350 people in Australia, Ecuador, Ghana, Italy, Laos, Poland, Russia and the United Kingdom. They tried to answer the question: Does kindness come mainly from different cultural traditions, or does it come from common human action? Earlier studies of kindness usually focused on cultural traditions, such as Indonesian whale hunters (捕鲸人) sharing their meat or rich Kenyans paying for village roads. The new study found that people from all cultures are similar in the ways they show kindness. The study showed that cultural differences are less important than people’s general “tendency (倾向) to give help when needed”.

A German named Konrad Zuse is considered to be the inventor of the computer. In 1941, he built the world’s first computer that was controlled by programs. It was used to do difficult math problems.
From 1937 to 1942, a teacher and a student from Iowa State University in the United States worked on a new computer. It was the world’s first electronic digital computer (电子数字计算机). It was the size of a desk and weighed over 700 pounds. That is the weight of a strong bear!
In 1946, two inventors worked together and built an even bigger and better computer. They called it ENLAC. It filled a huge room and weighed 30 tons, or about as heavy as 5 elephants. It used lots of electricity and needed a way to help keep it cool.
In 1947, the transistor (晶体管) was invented. This make it possible to build a smaller computer. The invention of integrated circuits (集成电路) then took the jobs of many electronic parts and put them into one part.
Then microprocessors (微处理器) were invented, which took lots of integrated circuits and put them into one microchip (微芯片). These improvements led to the computers we use today. But scientists still developed other inventions to make the computer do different things and easier to use.
Computers paved the way for the Internet, a whole new way of communicating. Web-pages, e-mails, and high-speed Internet connections soon followed. These things made communicating with people all over the world easy. What might computers do in the future? What will be invented then?

Try the Ooho bubble (泡状物). It is a small ball of water. The water is in a soft container (容器) . If people use it to hold water, they will not use the plastic bottles. It has no color, no smell and no taste. It is made from seaweed (海藻) and is safe for people to eat.
You can make a hole in the container to drink water from the Ooho bubble. Or you can just put the whole water ball into your mouth.
Three creators from the Imperial College London made the Ooho bubble. It is good for the environment. And people can only spend 0.14 yuan buying one ball. It is much cheaper than a bottle of water, so many people like it.
But there are still many problems to solve. For example, each water ball doesn't hold much water. People may have to drink a lot of them if they are very thirsty. Or some people may feel it's not clean to hold the water bubble in their hands. What do you think?

Changing Weather
The weather is changing. Over the last few years, heavy rains have caused floods (洪灾) in Brazil, Pakistan, and Thailand. Droughts (干旱) have struck Russia and Australia. Heat waves have killed thousands in Europe. There are more different kinds of terrible wild weather all over the world. In 2011 alone, the bad weather caused the world to lose 150 billion dollars.
Warmer and Wetter
As more wild weather events happen, a worried world is beginning to ask questions like: What is going on with the weather? And why? Many also want to know: Is this natural, or are we to blame (责怪)?
The answer seems to be: a little of both. Wild weather is natural. ▲ This global (全球的) warming makes heat waves more likely to happen. The higher temperatures also cause more water to enter the air. This causes much more rain. Some scientists also believe global warming makes some storms stronger.
This means we’re likely to see more wild weather. “But we don’t have to just stand there and take it,” says Scientist Michael Oppenheimer. He and other scientists say we need to stop the Earth from getting warmer. We also need to be prepared, to do things that will help save lives.

According to her Facebook post, Bell was taking the train home on Friday when she noticed a homeless old man sitting across from her Bell wrote that the man was wearing tattered shoes, and many pairs of socks to keep his feet warm, but there was blood through.
On the same train was another man. According to Bell's description, he was young, was carrying a bag and a suitcase. He was wearing big black snow boots(靴子),which looked new and expensive. They were built for a Chicago winter. Then he did a good thing.
Bell described that the young man took off his own boots and passed them to the old man. He opened his suitcase and gave him a pair of socks as well. Then the young man put on a different pair of socks as well. After that the young man put on a different pair of shoes--not as nice as the ones he had given away. He told the old man to try them on and helped him clean his feet and change into the new boots as quickly as he could, and then left the train.
At the end of her post, Bell wrote, “I love my city. I love that in a time and place where a quiet act of kindness appears without warning.”
The story has received thousands of comments(评论), with many people describing how moving they found the act of kindness. One wrote, “We can all learn from that young man.” Others are thanking Bell for sharing the story--there are still good people in the world.

【推荐3】Clothes are important and necessary to us, but do you know how to choose suitable(合适的)clothes in a right way? Here are some ideas for you.
When you go shopping and want to buy some clothes, you should think about which kind of clothes you really need and decide how much money you can spend on them. Then look at the labels that are inside the new clothes. They tell you how to take care of the clothes. The label for a shirt may tell you to wash it in warm water. A sweater label may tell you to wash it in cold water. The label on a coat may say "dry clean only" and cleaning in water may ruin(损坏) this coat. If you do as the directions say on the label, you can keep your clothes looking their best.
Many clothes today must be dry-cleaned. Dry cleaning is expensive. When buying new clothes, you had better check if they need to be dry-cleaned. You can save money if you buy clothes that can be washed or that are well made. Well-made clothes last longer. They look good even after they have been washed many times.
Clothes that cost more money don't always mean they are better made. They may not fit you, either. On the other hand, less expensive clothes may sometimes look better and fit you well.
