If you go to a fast food restaurant, you will probably see a lot of teenagers. Today, many teenagers are overweight, and some of this is because of their bad eating habits. Most teenagers love food with a lot of fat, oil, salt, and sugar. People often call this kind of food “junk food”.
But bad eating habits go beyond fast food. We find many teenagers have bad eating habits. Some don’t have breakfast before they go to school. During the day, some don’t have a proper meal for lunch. In a recent survey at one school, scientists found that over two-thirds of the students didn’t follow a healthy diet. They didn’t like vegetables, and many of them didn’t like to eat fruits. They preferred to eat food with a lot of salt, sugar, or fat.
Parents today also worry about their children’s diet. Some doctors give the following advice:

★ Teenagers shouldn’t eat food with too much salt. Salt can cause high blood pressure in the future.
★ Teenagers should eat food with less fat, oil, and sugar.

Some scientists think that one day, someone must have dropped a bit of meat or fish in the fire. After a while they noticed how good it smelled, tasted it and realised the heat had made it much more enjoyable to eat. Cooking was born, and finally everyone was doing it because it has three very important effects (效果) on our food.
First, it makes a lot of raw, hard food softer and easier to eat. Take a potato, for example. It starts off as a solid part but cooking can turn it into soft potato.
Second, it makes our food safer to eat. Sometimes food has microbes (微生物) that could make us ill. However, most of these microbes don’t like really hot temperature. Cooking kills them, so they can’t make us sick.
Third, and this is the most exciting effect for a cook like me cooking can change food into something that looks, smells and tastes wonderful.

Since January 2013, many cities in China have seen a lot of foggy days. In Beijing, only five days in January were free of smog (雾霾). What’s the difference between fog and smog?
According to scientists, fog is made up of tiny (微小的) drops of water and also ice particles (颗粒) during very cold conditions. Smog is dirty air that looks like a mixture of smoke and fog, caused mainly by smoke from cars and factories in cities.
An official for the Ministry of Environmental Protection told Beijing News that PM2.5 pollution is the main problem with air pollution. PM 2.5 refers to pollution with small particles 2.5 micrometers or less in diameter (直径).
According to the Chinese Academy of Sciences, two main factors that cause PM 2.5 are motor vehicles and the burning of coal.
Poor air has done harm to people’s health. Children and the elderly are more at risk. A report from Beijing Children’s Hospital shows that from December 5 to December 11, 2013, half of the patients in the hospital came for respiratory (呼吸道的) problems.
Air problems and environmental protection have become a care for the whole nation.
Premier Li Keqiang made his last Government Work Report(政府工作报告) on March 6, 2014. The report said that the government should work hard to prevent pollution and give people a healthy living environment.

“The International Olympic Committee(IOC) found that for mascots to be successful they had to be cute and liked by 9-year-olds,” said Cao Xue, he chose Bing Dwen Dwen, which became the final mascot.
According to Cao, Bing Dwen Dwen was chosen from 5, 816 designs from 38 countries and regions. The idea first came from a traditional Chinese snack bingtanghulu—fruit coated in syrup(糖浆), a simple snack cannot stand for a country by itself. Cao’s team then tried many plants and animals, finally going with a panda. “What can better stand for China than our national treasure?”said Cao. “We don’t need to explain anything to have it understood across different cultures. “
However, there were already too many cartoon images of pandas out there so the mascot needed to be different. Cao first decided that it should be a baby panda instead of an adult one. This is how they got Bing Dwen Dwen’s body shape. Its body has the same length(长度) as its head.
Cao’s team then collected all the panda designs they could find across the world to avoid similarities. They even visited the panda nature reserve(保护区) in Wolong, Sichuan(灵感). They found that baby pandas walk pigeon-toed(内八字) and often lean while standing.
“When we finally got Bing Dwen Dwen, our whole team was over the moon,”said Cao. “Now I can’t wait to see it greet the world at the Winter Games opening ceremony.”

The first secret of happiness is to enjoy the simple things in life. Too often, we spend so much time thinking about the future—for example, getting into college or getting a good job—that we fail to enjoy the present. People who have several close friends often live happier and healthier lives.
Another secret to live a happy life is to be active, and have hobbies where you forget your problems and time. Many people experience this—dancing, or playing a sport, such as swimming. You can forget about your problems, and only think about the activity.
Finally, many people find happiness in helping others. Studies show that people feel good when they spend their time helping others. If you want to feel happier, do good things for someone. You can help a friend with his or her studies, go shopping to buy food for an elder person, or simply help out around the house by washing the dishes.
