In the UK, most children have their lunches at school, but in some schools, parents can choose what their children eat. The children can have a school dinner—a hot cooked meal; or they can take a packed lunch (自带午餐) with them, which usually includes cold food like sandwiches.
Often parents know what their children want. Cath, a mother of three children, told us, “My children have packed lunches because they say they hate school dinners. So I make three packed lunches every morning.”
However, another mother, Susan, made a different choice. She said, “My daughters have always had school dinners. I think they probably get healthier food at school than a few sandwiches I make for them.”
But how healthy are school dinners? Kaz, a father, thought poorly of them. He said, “Fizzy (起泡的) drinks were offered and I think there were a lot of chips.”
Jamie Oliver spent a year working in a school kitchen. He was worried about the unhealthy food which included burgers, pizzas and chips. So he tried to cook healthy food such as vegetable soups and curries (咖喱) for the children instead.
So Jamie improved the school dinners, and trained the dinner ladies to cook healthy food in that school. Then he advised the government to improve school food across the country. And it seems that the changes have begun.
Anna, a student, told us, “We used to have a fast food window where we got chips and coke, but they stopped that this year. There’s a salad restaurant, which is good, so it’s healthier than it was.”

Vitamin D is really important for our bones (骨骼). When we are young, vitamin D builds up our bones and makes them strong. When we are older, we still need vitamin D to keep our bones strong. Our bodies keep the vitamin D in our bones and teeth. Then we lose vitamin D as we work and exercise during the day. But our bodies can’t make vitamin D. So we have to get it from outside of our bodies.
Where can a person get this very important vitamin? Vitamin D is in foods like fish and eggs. Sometimes, vitamin D is added to bread, milk, and orange juice. Food is not the only way our bodies can get vitamin D. The sun also gives us vitamin D. If we want to be healthy, we should spend some time in the sun each day. ChatGPT, a smart AI chatbot(聊天机器人) tool, has swept the ed-ucation world in the past months. According to a US survey of more than 1,000 students, over 89 percent of them have used ChatGPT to help with a homework task.
Developed by US company OpenAI, ChatGPT is a powerful tool. You can ask it to write stories and emails, create recipes(食谱), translate languages, and answer all kinds of questions.
Some schools in the US, Australia and France have banned the use of ChatGPT. In the US, for example, New York City public schools banned students and teachers from using ChatGPT on the district’s networks and devices(设备), CNN reported.
The move comes out of worries that the tool could make it easier for students to cheat on assign-ments. Some also worry that ChatGPT could be used to spread inaceurate(不准确的) information.
“It does not build critical-thinking(批判性思维) and problem-solving skills, which are necessa-ry for academic(学术的)and lifelong success,” said Jenna Lyle, the deputy press secretary of the New York City Department of Education.
Apart from bans, teachers are making changes to their classes to block the use of ChatGPT. Some college teachers in the US try to include more speaking exams and handwritten papers instead of typed ones. The New York Times reported.
However, not all educators say “no” to ChatGPT. Some Canadian universities are drafting(起草)policies on its use, for both students and teachers. They have no plans to completely ban the tool so far.
Bhaskar Vira, pro-vice-chancellor(副校长) for education at the University of Cambridge in the UK, said that bans on AI software like ChatGPT are not sensible(明智的).“We have to know that AI is a tool people will use,” he told Varsity, the school newspaper of the university. What we need to do is “adapt our learning, teaching and examinations”. That way, we can “have integrity(诚信) while recognizing the use of the tool”.

What will the schools be like in the future? Smart schools will be the schools of the 21st century. These future schools are different from universities and colleges in the past. They use high technology(科技)to help students learn more quickly and safely, as well as bring convenience(便利)to teachers.
The University of British Columbia has built Canada’s first 5G-powered smart school. The school worked with a high-tech company to build a 5G network across the school.
At Staffordshire University in the UK, many students enjoy talking to Beacon and asking it questions. Beacon is an AI robot that was made by the university. It is like a personal helper for students. They can ask it questions, such as if one of their classes is over.
Amazon also has smart school things. Alexa, the company’s voice-activated(声控的)smart robot, can be used to help teachers with their classes. For example, Alexa can remember what the teacher’s classroom is like, such as how bright the lights should be, and change them right away.
“Cities are so big, and there are so many stakeholders(利益相关者), so it can be difficult. But universities have their own buildings...so they can become a living lab,” said Gemmy Ginty, a teacher who is working on smart schools for the University of Glasgow.
