“How far is it?” I asked. She replied, “About three minutes and I’ll drive you there.”
After ten minutes on the mountain road. I looked at her again. “I thought you said three minutes.” She smiled. “This is a detour (绕行路线).” After that, we parked the car and got out.
Walking along a path, we turned at a corner. The peace and silence of the place began to fill my mind. From the top of the mountain, I saw several fields full of flowers, shining like a carpet (地毯) before us. It looked as if the sun spilled gold down the mountain.
A lot of questions came to my mind. Who created such beauty? Why? How?
As we moved on, we saw a sign that read, “Answers to the Questions I Know You Are Asking.”
The first answer was, “One Woman, Two Hands, Two Feet, and Very Little Brain.” The second was. “One at a Time.” The third, “Started in 1971.”
On our way home, I was so shocked by what we had seen. She changed the world. One bulb (一株) at a time. She started almost 50 years ago. It was probably just the beginning of an idea, but she kept at it. I said, “Imagine if I had a dream and worked at it, just a little bit every day, what might I have achieved?”
My mother looked at me, smiling. “Start tomorrow,” she said. “Better yet, star today.”

Without access to energy, poor people are stuck in the dark and deny all of these benefits and opportunities that come with power. For thousands of years, people burned wood for fuel and their lives were hard. But when we started using coal in the 1800s, life started getting better a lot faster. Pretty soon we had lights, refrigerators, elevators, cars, planes, and all the other things that make up modern life. So if we really want to help the poor, we need to find a way to get them cheap and clean energy.
Millions of the poorest families work as farmers. Changes in climate often mean that their crops won't grow because of too little rain or too much rain. That's particularly unfair because they're the least responsible for emitting (排放) CO2, which is causing the problem in the first place.
Scientists say that to avoid these great long-term changes to the climate, the world must cut greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80 percent by 2050, and eliminate them entirely by the end of the century. Many scientists agreed that wouldn't be enough. The problem is that CO2 lingers (残留) in the atmosphere for decades.
In 2015, the world emitted 36 billion tons of CO2 to produce energy. Someone may tell you they know how to remove 100 million tons of CO2 per year. That sounds like a lot, but if you do the math 100 million divided by 36 billion you'll see that they're talking about 0.3 percent of the problem.

(P — world's population; S — services used by each person; E — energy to provide service, C —carbon dioxide produced by energy)
As you learned in math class, any number multiplied by zero will equal zero. So if we want to get to zero CO2, then we need to make at least one of the four factors zero. But the world's population(P) is currently 7 billion and expected to increase to 9 billion by 2050. In terms of services used by each person (S), there are a lot of things like food, living, transportation and so on, which means the need of much energy in providing them. Therefore, it is carbon dioxide produced by energy (C) that matters the most in cutting down CO2.

A.escape from | B.take control of | C.get rid of | D.hide from |
A.Every effort, whether it is great or little, is worth trying. |
B.What we can do to handle CO2 is far from enough. |

D.It is necessary for people to deal with the big problem step by step. |

Bungee jumping (蹦极) and motorcycle racing (摩托车赛) are quite dangerous sports. Bungee jumping only lasts for a few minutes or even seconds. You jump from a high place, about 200 meters above the ground, and there is a rubber band (橡胶带子) tied to your legs. When you jump down, the rubber band pulls you up. About 2,000,000 people around the world have tried bungee jumping.
Why do people join in these dangerous sports? Some scientists say that it is because modern life has become safe and it is not interesting. In the past, people lived in danger. They had to go out and look for food, and life was like a fight but was interesting.
Many people think that there is little excitement in life. They live and work in safe places, buy food in shops, and there are doctors and hospitals to look after them if they become ill.

In 16th- and 17th-century Europe, the popularity of peas spread around. The craze around eating these bright green mini-treats in the springtime was so great that the queen wrote once:
“The question of peas continues. The wish of eating them, the pleasure of having eaten them, and the joy of eating them again are the three subjects that we have been discussing for days.”
Peas are among the oldest crops (作物) in human history. Just about anything we call a pea-whether a garden pea, snow pea, chickpea, or peanut-is a member of the larger family called Fabaceae. The peas we eat when fresh, green, and sweet-including garden peas, snap peas, and snow peas-are usually members of the type (种类) called Pisum. Other peas, such as chickpeas and peanuts, belong to some other types.
Sweet pea season is very short. The little round things come up as the winter months end and spring starts. In a few weeks, the leaves are overgrown and the peas not nearly as tasty. In fact, as soon as you pick peas off the vines (藤) , the sugars start changing into other forms, making them less delicious and sweet. It’s very difficult to keep peas sweet and fresh. If the queen had a fridge, she might not have spent days losing her mind over these tiny green vegetables.

The competitors are different in age, from teenagers to adults. Peng, 36, an associate senior editor(副主编)of a poetry magazine, is one of the most familiar faces of the show. He can recite around 1,000 poems.
With a master's degree in literature, Peng is always the hot favorite to win the prize. But, surprisingly, he's lost two finals in a row-the second season he lost to a 16-year-old high school student, Wu Yishu, and in the third season he was beaten by deliveryman(送货员) Lei Haiwei.

The season five final came down to Peng and 11-year-old Han Yaxuan-again he was facing a much younger rival. This time, though, there was to be no mistake and victory was finally his.

Sir John Gurdon is a good example of this. As a boy, he was told he was hopeless at science and finished bottom of his class. Now, aged 79, the very same Gurdon shared the 2012 Nobel Prize in Medicine with Japanese stem cell researcher Shinya Yamanaka.
Like so many scientists, Gurdon shows us where the power of curiosity(好奇心)and perseverance can lead.
When he was 15 in 1948, Gurdon ranked last out of the 250 boys at his high school in biology and every other science subject. Gurdon’s high school science teacher even said that his dream of becoming a scientist was “quite ridiculous”.
In spite of his teacher’s criticisms, Gurdon followed his curiosity and kept working hard. He went to the lab early and left later than anyone else. He experienced thousands of failures.
“My own belief is that we will, in the end, understand everything about how cells actually work,” Gurdon said.
In 1962, Gurdon took a cell from an adult frog and moved its genetic(基因的)information into an egg cell. The egg cell then grew into a clone of the adult frog. This technique later helped to create Dolly the sheep in 1996, the first cloned mammal in the world.
In 2006, Gurdon’s work was developed by Yamanaka to show that a sample of a person’s skin can be used to create stem cells. Using this technique, doctors can repair a patient’s heart after a heart attack.
“Luck favors the prepared mind,” Gurdon told the Nobel Prize Organization. “Ninety percent of the time things don’t work, but when they do, you have to seize(抓住)the chance. ”
