It is hard to imagine a place that’s more dangerous than Death Valley. Death Valley is the hottest and the driest place in North America.
Death Valley isn’t an easy place to live in. It gets less than two feet of rain year and it’s hot, too. In July, the temperature often reaches over 46℃. There is even a lake that has turned into salt crystals (晶体). But it is cold at night. When it gets cold enough, the water on the ground will turn into very thin ice. Then the strong wind—like a large hand—can move the rocks along the icy ground. That is why the rocks can “walk” on their own in Death Valley.
Although the weather is Death Valley is terrible, it is still filled with lives. Nothing can stop plants and animals from making it their home. People have found more than 1,000 kinds of plants there. It also has 51 kinds of mammals (哺乳动物), 6 kinds of fish, and more than 300 kinds of birds. The animals aren’t all small, either.
Finding water is the biggest challenge for anything that lives there. Some plants have roots (根部) that go fifty feet under the ground to find water. Some animals get the water they need from flowers.
Death Valley really creates a lot of surprising things!

Major Snow, the 21st solar term (节气) of the year, falls on Dec 7 this year. It means the beginning of midwinter. During Major Snow, the temperature drops greatly and there may be more snow days.
The arrival of snow adds a delightful touch to the cold days. The snow in North China may go on a whole day, breaking tree branches and blocking the road while snow doesn’t happen a lot, but just a little, great fun in the South.
The natural scenery is “ice blockading for hundred smiles and snow flying through thousands miles”, “From hill to hill no bird in flight; From path to path no man in sight”. In the South, the snowflakes fly around and the world turns white.
There’s a Chinese saying: “A fall of snow gives promise of a fruitful year.” Most farmers welcome snow because snow can protect crops from cold fronts and keep the fields warm. Even if it melts (融化), it also can provide enough water for the crops in the spring.
Snow season is also good for skiing and skating. In northern China, there are many places for natural snow and ice. For example, Heilongjiang and Jilin provinces often already have big snow in November. People can also go to the frozen lakes to play ice sports. But people in the south will stay indoors to enjoy the winter activities. People in Chongqing like to have potted lamb soup or stewed lamb soup with their families and friends. People in Nanjing like to stew the lamb with yams or wolfberries to make it more delicious.

The best place to see and hug pandas is in Chengdu. Visitors can also take part in volunteer (志愿者) to take care of pandas. If you just want to see pandas, we advise you to go to Chengdu Panda Breeding and Research Base (基地). You can see pandas at different ages, from the oldest to the newborns. This base is huge but usually crowded. If you want to experience more, consider (考虑) a one-day volunteer program at Dujiangyan Panda Base, or longer programs in Wolong Panda Center and Ya’an Bifengxia Panda Base.
Pandas don’t hibernate, so you can visit them in all four seasons. Spring and autumn are the best times to see pandas when they are the most active and temperatures are the most comfortable. But if you visit between August and November, you will probably see lovely panda babies. Pandas spend almost half their days sleeping. So if you want to see them walking or climbing, it’s important to know their rest time. They usually sleep around noon, any time from around 10:00 am to around 2:00 pm. We suggest you get to a panda base as early as possible (8:00 to 10:00 am is the best), because it is less-crowded and the pandas are at their most active.

Most people are afraid of snakes. They may think snakes are dangerous and ugly. There are more than 2,000 kinds of snakes. Most of them live in mountains or forests, and in cities sometimes we can find them in grass or other dark places. Snakes can’t walk or run because they have no legs or feet, but these long and thin animals can move very fast on their stomachs. Snakes usually have green, yellow or black skins, which make it difficult for their enemies to find them. In winter they hibernate in holes. They look for a hole to stay inside, in the ground, or in a rock or a tree. They do not wake up again until spring comes. Snakes feed on mice, frogs, bird eggs and so on.
Snakes play an important part in nature. We can make useful medicine with them. Without their help, the rodents (啮齿动物) will be out of control. But many of them are in danger of disappearing. Houses and buildings take up the land where snakes live. Many snakes lose their lives in traffic, and people often kill snakes for their skins or meat.

② But do you know how butterflies become the flying insects? It’s one of the amazing wonders of nature. In the beginning, female butterflies lay some small and colorful eggs on the leaves of the plants.
③ It’s hard to believe that the eggs will become something completely different in a few days. They become walking insects. These insects are called caterpillars (毛虫). They now have legs, eyes and large bodies. A new life has begun. The caterpillars can eat, walk and see. But they are still not butterflies.
④ Soon, after growing big, the caterpillars make covers to themselves. They cover themselves in the nice protective blanket and go to sleep. We call them chrysalises (蛹).
⑤ After a period of time, the blankets break and the wet, weak butterflies appear. They each now have six legs, a mouth, eyes and two pairs of wings. Shortly, the wings fill with blood, and the beautiful, colorful butterflies spread their wings and fly away.

Animals
The park is home to Hainan gibbons (长臂猿). They look like monkeys, but have no tails. They eat fruits and leaves from over 130 kinds of plants. In the 1980s, there were fewer than 10 gibbons (长臂猿) in the park. In 2022, there were 36 because people protected their home and planted trees.
Plants
The park is a “live museum” of plants. It is also home to 133 kinds of national key protected plants. Cycas hainanensis (海南苏铁) is an example. It has feather-like (羽毛样的) big leaves. It grows slowly, but can live as long as 200 years. It probably won’t grow flowers or fruits in North China. But in Hainan, cycas hainanensis (海南苏铁) over 10 years old blossom (开花) and bear fruits (结果) almost every year.
Culture
Miao and Li people have lived in the park for generations (世代). Their houses look like upside-down boats. They are built above the ground to keep away animals. Li people make clothes from bark (树皮). Their history of tree bark clothing dates back to about 10,000 years ago. Some people still use bark clothing nowadays.

Elephants are cute animals, but they brought serious problems for the farmers near Mount Kenya National Park. The elephants often left the park, went into the farms near the park, and ate their crops. So farmers slept in their fields (田地). If elephants came, they drove them away. However, the next day, the farmers were too tired to do their work.
Then, someone thought of a better way. They built electric fences (电栅栏) to keep the elephants out. The farmers had more time for their work. However, these fences were expensive to build. So they had to give up building electronic fences.
“The elephant problem started when more people came to Mount Kenya and started new farms,” a scientist said. “The elephants had lived here for a very long time before people came. At some times of the year, elephants go from one place to another. They remember their old routes (路线), and they walk through anything that’s there—like a farm or even a house.”
Now the government has a plan. It wants the people around the park to start tourism. People around the world love elephants. When more and more elephant-lovers come to visit Mount Kenya National Park, those farmers can make money by serving them. The government hopes that this way, people and elephants will live together happily.

Food is everywhere, whether family events or dinner parties. Having big meals so many days will make you unhealthy. Nothing is more important than the health. How can you get both of them?
Plan your day in the morning and think about some healthy food you want to eat. If you are going out for lunch or dinner, watch the menu ahead of time so you can get an idea of what you may order.
Eat healthily most of the time. The holiday is about enjoying. But to your favorite foods, my suggestion is not eating them all at once. Plan for one treat a day and in this way you will have something to hope for.
Drink more water. Water can clean your body. You can also get water from fruits, vegetables and soup. Keep away from soda and juice. I suggest keeping a water bottle in your case.
