A 14-year-old girl Du Bingzi was walking towards her home. Suddenly a man stopped her, caught her hands and shouted, “Give me your money!” But in one quick movement, she took back her arms and screamed for help. The man ran away without getting any money. Du is a student from Beijing No.25 Middle School. Four years ago, her teacher Chen Haoyu started giving his students an unusual course: self-protection.
According to a new Ministry of Education (教育部) survey, student safety has become a big problem. Nearly 50 percent of students say they are worried about robbery (抢劫) on the way to and from school. Besides this school, others like Shenzhen Bao’an Middle School, also gives students such courses. Students like the self-protection lessons since there are no exams or boring classes. Student Ma Zichao said, “I learn how to save lives if someone is badly hurt. Most importantly, I know how to prevent dangers before they really happen.” Chen added, “Students also learn how to work together and know more from real life.”
Chen offers more advice on how to stay out of danger in his course. Here are some tips.
* If you are robbed, keep calm. If you can’t cry for help or run away, give the robber your money. Remember the robber’s looks and tell the police.
* If you are in a traffic accident, take down the car number. If it is a bicycle, try to call your parents before letting the rider go. Maybe you don’t realize how seriously you are hurt.
* If someone is drowning (溺水) and you can’t swim, don’t get into the water. Shout out for help right away. Danger is never as far away as you think. Look after yourself at all times!

When students get bored with the boring hours of theory (理论) classes, the practical classes bring relaxation to them. The laboratory is the place where students actually get hands-on experience about the lessons they have learned. High school students are allowed to perform the basic experiments of different branches of science, mainly physics, chemistry and biology. However, lab safety is of great importance. Lab safety rules are mainly about personal safety and proper handling of instruments to avoid accidents inside the lab.
Middle school is the first chance for students to work in a science lab. Lab experiments should be carried out quite carefully. And the students are always told to follow the guidelines to make sure of lab safety. Therefore, first of all, you must be careful of your personal safety. So you should be dressed in a full-sleeved apron (围裙) while performing experiments. Gloves, safety glasses and caps are also important things required for personal safety. Since you are dealing with the instruments or the chemicals for the first time, you might be curious to try something new. But such activities often lead to lab dangers. So, avoid any form of carelessness. Besides, you have to carefully listen to your teachers in order to start the experiment in the correct process and get exact results.
There are different types of instruments inside a science lab. Physics labs are filled with different electrical instruments, which need safe operation. So you need to perform the experiments under the supervision (监督) of your teacher, until you are good at them. Similarly, handle the chemicals according to the guidance of the lab assistant. Do not try to mix the chemicals as you please. It might lead to dangerous explosions (爆炸). Also, you should always keep a biology lab clean to avoid pollution.
You are new to the lab and therefore, it is your duty to learn about the lab completely. This includes a complete knowledge of placement of the lab equipment. You should learn about the correct operation technique of expensive instruments. Turn off the gas as soon as you have finished your experiments. You also should learn about where the fire extinguisher (灭火器) is and the working of fire safety instruments.
All students should follow the rules for your safety and perform the experiments carefully.

全国百万中小学生“线上开学”
Feb 17 should have been the start of the spring semester for many middle and primary schools in China. However, to control the novel coronavirus outbreak, many schools have delayed(延迟) the start of the semester, following instructions from the Ministry of Education (MOE). But students in China are still studying.
Instead of having classes at school, many students in Beijing and Guangzhou began their first day of online classes on Feb 17. Students in Shanghai will start online classes on March 2, 2020.
“In the morning, I have English class, followed by Chinese and math,” Liu Bo, a Junior 3 student from Beijing, told Xinhua. “I have also learned about epidemic prevention(预防传染病).”
According to the MOE, students are mainly taking classes to review previous knowledge rather than taking new classes during the online study period. Online courses are required to include content(内容) about epidemic prevention, psychological(心理的) health and educational activities.
“Online courses are only temporary measures(暂时的措施) taken during the epidemic, so when the new semester begins, schools should not replace(替代) classroom teaching with online class.” Lu Yugang from the ministry told China Daily.
The ministry also called on schools not to increase their students’ schoolwork burden(负担). Schools should not ask students to study online for long periods of time or study things beyond(超出) their curriculum(课程). Students must have enough time to rest, the ministry added. Also, it stressed(强调) that protecting students’ eyesight must be a priority(优先).

Peng began the speech with a story of her father. Her father grew up in a very small village in China. In those days, not many villagers could read, so her father opened a night school to teach them. With his help, many people learned to write their names and read newspapers for the first time. And many women were able to teach their children how to read. Peng’s father’s love for education influenced her deeply. She was lucky enough because she has a good education. Later, she followed in her father’s footsteps and became a professor of music.

S3: Should we go inside the building to help people in danger?
T: No, never. When you are outside, never go inside again. Just move away from buildings, because parts of a building may fall on you.
S4: You mean we find an open air and stay together.
T: Yes. You must stay away from bridges, trees and other tall things, like streetlights and power lines.
S5: We should protect our heads when running to a safe place.

When the rainstorm happens, the best way to protect ourselves is usually that parents lead us to hide or do something safely. However, school rehearsal(演练)is becoming a more and more popular way for children to learn. Most schools are spending much time in training students’ all skills for the serious events like rainstorm. More importantly, some schools even provide some special apps for the students to learn such skills online.

Books and E-books
As a book lover, I’ve tried both paper books and e-books. While both give you the pleasure of reading, the experience can be different.
Many people prefer reading paper books because they are easy to buy from bookshops and comfortable to read. Paper books also allow readers to make notes easily.
However, some books, such as dictionaries, can be heavy and are not easy to carry around.
Compared with paper books, e-books benefit students in many aspects. E-books can be stored in a reader, which is much lighter. Many e-book readers also have a dictionary for you to check new words quickly! However, you can only get e-books online. Unlike paper books, you must read e-books on an e-book reader, a computer, or a smartphone.
This adds extra cost. Moreover, your eyes can get tired easily when you read e-books on the screen for a long time.
Although more people will try e-books, I believe paper books will not disappear. In my opinion, it doesn’t matter which you use as long as it allows you to enjoy reading.

Four types of friends you need in your life
Do you know that people will die early if they have no friends during their lifetime? The survey shows if people want to live longer and more happily, you need to have some friends who can share your sadness and happiness or can be helpful when you are in trouble.
The following friends are just what you need to keep the doctor away.
A Loyal Best Friend
Everyone needs a friend who will support you in different situations. This kind of friend knows all of your deepest and darkest secrets, but still loves you all the same.
A Friendly Neighbor
These days, a lot of people don’t know their own neighbors. It’s a shame, because some neighbors can be the most helpful people. If you forget to lock the front door when you are on holiday, you can call your neighbors to lock it for you. So it’s wonderful to have nice and helpful neighbors.
A Workmate
You’ll find it much easier to chat with someone than eating lunch alone every day. Your workmate doesn’t have to be your best friend. If you two get along with each other, you can always start going out with them outside of the office.
A Friend from a Different Culture
If everyone has a friend from a different culture, the world would be much better. Remember that don’t be friends with someone just because they are from a different culture. Instead, keep your mind open, and if you meet someone from other countries, try to learn about their customs, values, and traditions.
If you have such kinds of friends, you will surely live longer and more happily.

How many times had you got a little money, then realized later you wanted to buy something special but all your money was gone? The way to stop this from happening is planning. Let’s see how we can save money.
Starting to save can be as simple as having three places to keep money, these can be different bank accounts or even boxes in a drawer.
“Divide your money into spending, saving and giving.” says bank manager Bryan Link.“Make a plan to help you understand your money’s different uses. For example, 10 percent should go to saving, 10 percent to giving and the rest to spending.”
Be sure to set some goals for saving money. Write down the things you need and the things you want. Need school clothes but want the newest computer game? Talk with your parents on what they’ll help you buy, and then save up for the rest.
“If you are saving for something big, work out how many weeks it will take you to save money to buy it.” advises Dave Ramsey, a radio host from Milliners.“When you save enough money, why not buy something you want? You will have a strong sense of satisfaction when you work hard and buy things with your own money.”
If you send your savings buying an expensive thing, perhaps, you won’t save enough money in the end. When this happens, don’t give up. Lean from your mistakes and do better next time.

Dear friends, would you like to be a genius (天才) like Einstein? A genius needs to learn and think. Reading is a good idea, but it’s not enough. Here are some ideas:
Ask. When you look at new things, ask why they’re new or different. Ask questions. Ask yourself and ask others. Keep thinking carefully until you find the answer.
Read. Try to read new things. Read books from different parts of the library. After you read, think about the ideas you learned before. Are they different from what you thought?
Relax. Many ideas come up when you relax. Take some time to relax yourself in the ways like taking a walk in a park, going to a concert or a museum.
Share. Einstein used to talk to his friends and explain his ideas. Sometimes, a friend can help you find the answer to a problem.
Be brave. Don’t be afraid that other people say your ideas are silly. If others don’t agree with your ideas, try to explain your ideas to them.
