A girl named Lucy was working as a nurse in a hospital and one day, an uncommon thing happened in her hospital. An old man fell down on the street and he couldn’t wake up. Two boys noticed this and without thinking twice, they took him to the hospital and left. After the doctor checked the old man, the doctor found that he needed an operation (手术) at once because he had a heart illness. The leader of the hospital said that the old man should pay his bill first, or he couldn’t have an operation. But nobody could found the old man’s family and nobody could pay his bill.
After Lucy heard about this, she made a surprising decision. In order to save the old man, she paid his bill although she was very poor and then the old man was sent to the operation room. After a few hours, the police found the old man’s family and the old man’s family came to the hospital. They wanted to thank Lucy by giving her an expensive gift but she refused. She said, “I do this just for saving a man’s life, not for the repay (回报).”
If all of us can help others who are in need, the world will be full of love. Those who help others are always loved by more people and they usually have more wonderful and happier lives. We should help others in need to make the world more beautiful.

As we were walking in the park, I unintentionally(无意地)looked down at my hand and found the diamond on my ring was missing. I was really worried, so I went back to look for it. I knew how small the chances were of finding it, but I still wanted to give it a try.
As I was fixing my eyes on the ground, I ran into an old gentleman by accident. “What’s the matter, love?” he asked nicely. “Sorry that I ran into you,” I said. “But I lost something. I’m really worried.” I explained about the missing diamond and showed him the hole in my ring.“That’s not going to be easy to find it,” he said. “Tell you what, love, I take a walk here every day. I’ll keep my eyes open for it.”
I thanked him, expecting nothing. A few days later, my husband and I met the old man again in the park. “Guess what,” he said.“I found your diamond!” I couldn’t believe what I saw when the gentleman handed the diamond back to me. Then my husband offered him money for his help, but he refused. The old man could have easily kept the diamond or sold it, as it’s worth several thousand dollars. But he didn’t.
Now thanks to this man, I’ll spend more time trying to do something equally nice for other people. All I have to do is to look at my ring and remind myself that there are still kind and generous souls(心灵)out there.

According to a new study, kids who volunteer aren’t just helping their community. They might be helping themselves as well. Scientists found that volunteering in schools or communities is connected with better health among children and teens.
The study compared kids who took part in community service with those who didn’t. Kids who volunteered were 66% more likely to grow up healthily or do well. And kids aged 12 and older who volunteered were 25% less likely to have anxiety (焦虑). The findings come from a survey provided by the parents of some 50,000 kids in the United States aged 6 to 17. The result shows that volunteering has a positive effect to raise higher levels of happiness, life-satisfaction, a sense of control over life and mental health.
The study comes at an important time. In another report, more than 40% of high school students said that they had ever felt sad or hopeless. During his climb, Erik faced many dangers. He struggled through 100 miles per hour winds and siding snow, ice, and rock. 【推荐1】When did you last see a polar(极地的) bear? On a trip to a zoo, perhaps? If you had attended a winter activity in New York a few years ago, you would have seen a whole polar bear club. These “Polar Bears” are people who meet frequently(频繁地) in winter to swim in freezing cold water. That day, the air temperature was 3℃, and the water temperature was a bit higher. The members of the Polar Bear Club at Coney Island, New York are usually about the age of 60. Members must satisfy two requirements(要求). First, they must get along well with everyone else in the group. This is very important because there are so many different kinds of people in the club. Polar Bears must also agree to swim outdoors at least twice a month from November through February.
Doctors do not agree about the medical effects of cold-water swimming. Some are worried about the danger of a condition in which the body’s temperature drops so low that finally the heart stops. Other doctors, however, point out that there is more danger of a heart attack(心脏病发作) during summer swimming because the difference between the air temperature and water temperature is much greater in summer than in winter.
The Polar Bears themselves are satisfied with the benefits (or advantages) of cold-water swimming. They say that their favorite form of exercise is very good for the circulatory system(循环系统) because it forces the blood to move fast to keep the body warm. Cold-water swimmers usually turn bright red after a few minutes in the water. A person who turns blue probably has a very poor circulatory system and should not try cold-water swimming.
The main benefits of cold-water swimming are probably mental. The Polar Bears love to swim all year round; they find it fun and relaxing. As one 70-year-old woman says, “When I go into water, I pour my troubles into the ocean and let them float away.”

I want to be a millionaire (百万富翁). But I'm not super smart, nor am I lucky enough to win a lottery (彩票). What can I do? I spoke with Rich Ramassini, director of strategy for PNC Investments. He told me, a teen, how to become a millionaire the old-fashioned way.
Set a goal
The first and most important thing you must do is to set a goal, Ramassini said. Make sure you write down your goal. This will help you stick to it when things get hard.
Automate saving
Let's say that you make $100 a week and you want to save $20 each week. Set up a rule so that every week, $20 automatically (自动地) goes from your checking account (储蓄账户) to another account for your goal. That leaves you with $80 that you can spend. However, if you take that $100, live your life, sit down at the end of the week and say how much money you have left, Ramassini said. "Often it is a big, fat zero, or even worse."
Grow your money
If you just put your money in a bank account, it's safe. But in exchange for that, you accept a lower rate (比率) of return. There are ways to make your money grow more quickly, Ramassini said. You can lend it to somebody, for example. He doesn't mean your friends. He means buying financial products (金融产品) like bonds (债券) and CD (大额定存), which give you a higher rate of interest in exchange for taking on more risk (风险).
1. What do we know about Rich Ramassini?A.He once won the lottery. |
B.He is a millionaire who is super smart. |

B.earn money by yourself |

A.Most people are able to save a large amount of money. |
B.Some people just run out of the money and fail to save any penny. |
C.Some people spend all the money on eating so that they can be really fat. |
A.buying bonds and CDs. | B.saving it in a bank account. | C.lending the money to friends. |
A.You've got to tell your money what to do or it will leave. |
B.Save your money in the bank until your bank account looks like a phone number. |
C.The quickest way to double your money is to fold it over and put it back in your pocket. |
