One day, you open the fridge and find some moldy (发霉的) food. But before you can throw it away, your mother stops you. She wants to cut off the moldy part and eat the rest. Is it safe to do this?
Mold (霉菌) can grow on almost all kinds of food. Mold is usually green, white, black or grey. Mold makes food soft and changes its color. Moldy food tastes quite bad and it’s not safe to eat. If you find mold in soft food, just throw it away. Soft food, such as bread, tomatoes or hot dogs, usually contains water inside. And the water inside allows mold to easily grow below its surface. Bacteria (细菌) can also grow along with it.
But it’s easy to clean mold from hard food. The mold can’t grow very deeply inside this kind of food. According to the BBC, you should cut about 2.5 cm around and below the mold to clean it. It’s OK to cut the moldy parts out of hard food and eat the rest. But if the food is completely covered with mold, throw it away.
Most kinds of mold are bad for us. But some kinds of mold can be used to make food. For example, penicillium (青霉菌) can be used to make many types of cheeses, such as blue cheese. These cheeses are safe to eat and they’re quite delicious as well.
So, if the food is not the special cheese, stop your mother from eating it!

Wu is not alone. Many students across China have the chance to eat with their headmasters. The government issued a notice on food safety and nutrition (营养) management in schools, asking headmasters from kindergarten to high school to have meals with students. The rule took effect (生效) on April 1st.
Many schools now have seats for school managers when they eat with students in the dining hall. After talking with them, the managers have to write reports and make suggestions to dining hall workers. Many students were asked about the food that they liked most. To their surprise, their favorite dishes appeared in the dining hall later. “It’s not just about the food. It makes me feel that I have a say in school,” explained one student. “My ideas are valued.”
Some headmasters regard these mealtime conversations as their main chance to communicate with students. And they notice that some students prefer meat to vegetables. “We are thinking about how to improve the dining hall’s dishes and provide students with a healthy diet,” one headmaster said. As students become more familiar with the school managers, they begin to express their own points of view.
“It’s important to understand students’ requirements. Our practice shows the school’s sense of responsibility,” another headmaster said.

Honey bees always live in groups called hives(蜂群) Each hive has a queen, drones(雄蜂)and workers(工蜂). Like a human society, each bee in a hive knows its own job.
The queen is the largest bee. She doesn’t go out to work, but lays eggs. Sometimes a queen can lay 3, 000 eggs in a day.
Drones do not collect food from flowers. They are the queen’s husbands. When there’s not much food, drones are often kicked out of the hive.
Workers are the smallest and busiest bees. A colony can have 50,000 to 60,000 workers. They collect food for the queen and babies. They guard the hive and help to keep it cool by fanning their wings. A worker only lives for 28 to 35 days.
To collect a pound of honey, a bee may have to fly a long way. Sometimes it is equivalent to(相当于) twice around the world. Bees have to visit more than 10,000 flowers to make a pound of honey.

Stonehenge is an ancient circle of stones in the south of England. It was built about 5,000 years ago. Every year, it attracts thousands of tourists to enjoy its beauty. They also wonder about how and why it was built.
There are about 80 stones and each is about five meters tall. The stones were 380 kilometers away from where they were made. The ancient people had only wooden tools. To move the stones they probably used tree trunks (树干) to roll them along. So it was a wonder to build Stonehenge. Scientists say it took millions of man-hours to move and raise the heavy stones. How did people move these huge pieces of stone from the place so far? No one knows the answer. One record said the great stones were carried to England by huge magical (有魔力的) aliens! But we don’t know.
Some scientists believe that Stonehenge was a temple. Some believe it was a place to bury dead people or perhaps it was used to study the stars and the sky at night. Others think it was even used to tell the time. Whatever the stones were used to do, they have always been the pride of British people.

【推荐3】Last year, nearly one in seven Americans took part in Dry January, a big task to keep away from wine for a month. The idea is to reduce something harmful from drinking too much and start the new year in a healthier way. The 31-day exercise began as a public health event in the UK about eight years ago and has been growing ever since.
Dry January is a way to improve your relationship with wine, says Keith Heinzerling, a medicine researcher in California. “Taking time away from drinking for a short period of time is easier for many people than going straight to a full control,” he says. “Even just a few weeks give you a fresh attitude about health and the chance to break bad habits you may have with wine.”
________, according to Dr. Heinzerling. “Within just few days of not drinking, your blood pressure and heart beat will be lower, and you’ll have improved blood sugar level, better sleep, and fewer worries,” he says.
Another point is that quitting wine often makes other good habits—exercise and healthy eating, for example—easier to start and keep on, which in turn leads to more good effects.
For those who are worrying they might not be able to control themselves not to drink, Dr. Heinzerling says, “An important sign is how you feel when you wake up in the morning. For example, Johnson, a drinker lover, who wakes up with coughing or a strong need for a drink, should not do Dry January without medical help,” he says.
For everyone—social drinkers and possible problem drinkers—one key to a positive Dry January is to see it not as a month of biting your teeth and getting through it until you can drink again, but rather the start of a healthier lifestyle overall.
