A school trip
Today we went to Underwater World for our school trip. It took us about 30 minutes to get there by bus. Underwater World is the most famous place in our city, so it attracts a lot of tourists every year.
When we arrived there, we were excited to see all kinds of sea animals, such as sharks, dolphins, seals and sea lions. The colors of these animals blended (相称) very well with the background, especially the corals (珊瑚).
The sharks in this aquarium attracted most tourists. They swam across the aquarium freely, while smaller fishes had to watch out and fear for their lives. Besides, dolphins are a big attraction, too. We watched a wonderful dolphin show before we left Underwater World.
The school trip was very enjoyable, and we learned a lot from the amazing world of animals.

Travel sets us thinking and makes us in discussions of major world problems. Traveling can improve our thinking skills. That’s WHY we travel. What follows is HOW we travel.
CHEAP TRAVEL
The less you spend, the closer you come to the reason you came.
We’re savers by choice when traveling, although we could afford to stay in middle-priced hotels and eat in their restaurants if we cut back on the length of our trips. By spending less we can travel longer and travel better. We meet more locals by using buses rather than taxis and by staying in small family-run hotels and eating in local-style cafes. Spending too much money makes you away from the foreign experience you came to have.
TRAVELERS — NOT TOURISTS
What’s the difference? Travelers are more likely to get deeper into the life of a country than tourists. The way to do this is to do lots of pre-trip reading about the countries we will visit, and try to learn a few words of local languages.
Independent travel is usually far less expensive than packaged tours. We don’t use travel agents because we don’t stay in hotels that charge high, and we can get cheaper tickets on the Internet. We like figuring out where to eat and working out how to get around. This puts us into direct contact with the local people. Independent travel isn’t as comfortable or convenient, but it’s the most meaningful way to travel.
MOVING AROUND
Despite its discomforts, we take public transportation whenever possible. Traveling in a car is easier, but also scarier. In much of the world roads are poor and driving behaviors are not fixed. Luckily, even the less developed countries often have good public transportation systems, riding buses and trains brings us into close contact with the local people.
CARRYING STUFF(东西)
Backpacks work better for long-term travel than the wheeled luggage(轮式行李箱) most middle-aged travelers use. Using luggage is fine with a car, but backpacks are easier for bus and train travel. Best of all, wearing backpacks bridge the gap between age groups — allowing gray-haired travelers like us to make friends with younger travelers.

Space tourism is space travel for fun. What was once only a dream is now becoming a reality.
After the first man landed on the moon in 1969, some scientists thought that hotels would be built on the moon in the 21st century. They also considered the possibility that families might go for a holiday on the moon. Neither of these predictions (预测) have come true yet—but the rapid development of technology may make these predictions come true.
Some companies tried to send tourists into space successfully, but it was too expensive. In order to make it cheaper, suborbital (亚轨道的) space travel is a choice for many companies. Passengers can go to a height of between 100 and 160 km above earth, experience 3-6 minutes of weightlessness and a view of the stars. and then come back down to earth. This costs about $100, 000 per person.
While it could be an amazing experience, there are some problems with space tourism. Many people believe that it could make global warming (全球变暖) worse and it is not good for the ozone layer (臭氧层). What’s worse, there are still millions of people worldwide who couldn’t pay for it.

Many people enjoy going on holiday. It is a good chance to relax, visit new places and see new things. But you should decide who you want to travel with.
Travelling with your family can be very cheap or even free if your parents pay. But there are many arguments (争吵). For example, on our trip to Hawaii last year, we had different ideas. Dad always wants to go to a museum. Mom would like to stay in the hotel. My sister likes to shop for clothes. As for me, the coffee shop is the best place.
It would be fun to travel with friends. When you travel with friends, you have to do more different things than when you travel with your family. It is a good way to strengthen (加强) a friendship. You can get to know more about your friends. You can become closer to each other. But money is always important. You may have different budgets (预算). There are also a lot of compromises (让步) about what to eat and where to stay.
There’s the third choice about who you travel with. That’s travelling alone. If you travel alone, you might spend less money. You can choose what you want to do and eat. It’s easier for you to make new friends.
Of course, travelling alone is not always a good idea. Sometimes you might get bored. If you need to go to the toilet at the bus station or airport, there is nobody to look after your things.

“I’m Captain Carter Harrison. I’m here to visit Mrs. Melissa Harrison,”said Mr. Harrison to the front desk. “Oh, Melissa has been asking about you all week. She is looking forward to seeing you. Here is your visitor ID,” the receptionist said. “She is in Room 3417.”
The young man came to the door and slowly opened it. Inside, an elderly woman lying in bed slowly opened her eyes. “Daddy,” she said quietly.
“Oh! Melissa has aged so much since I last saw her a few months ago!” Harrison thought to himself. Of course, a few months’ ship time means that years have passed on Earth.
“How was your trip, Daddy? Did you bring me back anything?” Melissa asked. She welcomed him home excitedly – just like a little girl. “Sure. Look at these – a coin from Planet 8 and a diamond from Planet 173.” She smiled and nodded (点头示意) towards her shelf. Hundreds of small stones and statues lay across its top. He placed the objects with the rest of her collections.
Melissa was sleeping now. Harrison pulled a chair up to her bedside. Warm tears filled his eyes. “I am sorry, Melissa,” he said softly, “Your grandparents brought you up to be a perfect young woman, but I missed your first steps. I was asked to work as a captain for only two years. However, we had lost so many men in the First Space War. I couldn’t just leave my soldiers. I must help protect our planet.”
Harrison held her hand in silence for a long time. He knew this was possible the last time he would see his daughter alive. It would be five years’ Earth time before he came back from space again.
There would be another 30 years before he retired, Harrison thought. He would lose hundreds of years of Earth time. And each time he returned, he would learn that his loved ones had died and new ones had been born. Harrison thought for a moment and wrote her daughter a note. It said, “ 6 ”. Then he kissed her and quietly left the room.
Outside, he caught an air taxi. He took a deep breath and climbed into his taxi.

15 years ago, my parents bought a small house in the countryside. They used it for holidays. After I was born we started to go to the holiday house more. We used to drive 3 hours to get to our lovely house every Friday evening.
During the week my parents worked in London. My two brothers and I went to expensive private schools and we were all very busy. We hardly saw each other. We had several babysitters (临时保姆) as my parents had to work long hours. The only time we could be together was the weekend, and that was my happiest time. However, every Sunday morning was torture (折磨) because we had to leave the house then. We all hated the idea of leaving our village friends and the beautiful countryside.
Last year my dad sold our big house near London and my parents gave up their jobs and long working hours. They bought a smaller car. We are now living in our holiday house—two adults, three kids and a dog. My parents got jobs that allow them to work from home. We never have babysitters.
The best change for me is that now I go with my brothers to a small local school. After school we get on our bikes and ride around to see friends. My life is just so different. We feel peaceful and happy. We have fewer things but for me it seems like we have so much more. I am so glad we have changed our way of life.

Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park, in the south of Hainan Island, has the most concentrated and well-preserved tropical rainforest in China. President Xi Jinping visited it in April 2022.
The national park covers 4,269 square kilometers, or one-seventh of the island. More than 95 percent of the park is virgin forest and is home to 3,653 types of vascular plants and 540 types of terrestrial vertebrates(陆生脊椎动物).
The park is the only habitat(栖息地)of the world’s most endangered primate(灵长类动物)—the Hainan gibbon(长臂猿). They look like monkeys but have no tails. They live in trees and eat fruits and leaves from more than 130 plants. The number of Hainan gibbons has increased from fewer than 10 in the 1980s to 36 in 2022. This shows China’s achievements in environmental protection.
Not just a home to animals, the park is a “live museum” of amazing plants. More than 400 kinds of plants grow only in Hainan. Cycas hainanensis(海南苏铁)is a wild plant native to the island. With feather-like leaves, this plant can live up to 200 years old.
With so many plants and animals, the biodiversity level of the park is similar to that of the Amazon rainforest in Brazil. It’s a treasure for both China and the world.
