The child had a jacket on but it wasn’t buttoned up(扣上). The man began to tell us he wanted to borrow some money for the night to get his wife and kid into a hotel. He had a job but no place to live in and was waiting for the first paycheck. He said he could get our mailing address and mail the money back.
The guy I was with reached into his pocket to give this man a $20 bill. As the man was reaching his hand out to take the money, I put my hand on my new friend’s hand and said, “Can I talk to you for a minute?”
I told him that every day people asked my mother for money on her way to work. She said they made more money than she did, simply begging for money. These people were cheating those with soft hearts. And if they were truly worried about their child, they would have at least buttoned his jacket or covered him with his blanket.
My new friend looked at me with disappointment and said, “Michelle, I know there are people out there that take advantage of(利用)others. I also know there are people out there that are one paycheck away from being homeless. If I give $20 to 10 people and only one of them really needs it and uses it for the right thing, it is worth it.”

Once my teacher, Miss Mills, had given me a ten-word spelling test. My mother and I went over the list again and again until I knew those words. I felt great. I thought, “Wow! This time, I’m going to pass.” The next day, I went into the classroom and began to write down the words. The first word was truck. I wrote that one down: t-r-u-c-k. I was feeling pretty confident. Then came the word neighbor-I wrote down the letter n. I knew there was an r. Then I wrote n-i-r-b. My confidence failed me. I had gone from 100 percent to maybe a D-minus (D-). Where did the words go?
Some people talk about information disappearing from your brain. That was my life. I was an underachiever, who was not able to learn as well as expected.
Now I know I have dyslexia (诵读困难症). A person with dyslexia might see the as teh, and bird as brid. My brain learns differently. A learning disability (障碍,缺陷) can really change the way you feel about yourself. Now I know that even if I learn differently, I can still be filled with greatness.
Today when I visit schools as an actor, director, and writer of children’s books, I tell children that everyone has something special inside. It’s our job to find out what that is and get it out, and give it to the world as a gift.

One night in September 2005, a man and his kid got out of a taxi and came to Cheng. The father said that his kid was a freshman (大一新生) at the university and that 6,000 yuan they had was stolen. He asked if Cheng could help them by paying the taxi driver. “Of course,” Cheng replied. It was 68 yuan.
Several days later, he heard some stories about the kid he had helped. The kid had worked hard to get into the university. He was poor, and his parents had borrowed 6,000 yuan for his college education.
However, since the money was gone, the kid would probably drop out.
Cheng decided to help again. He wasn’t rich, but he paid 6,000 yuan for the kid’s education (教育) and didn’t tell it to anyone. Cheng also took out a few hundred yuan every month and sponsored (资助) the kid through college. In the following years, he also sponsored another five students, but these stories about him were never known by others until recently.
The greatest thing about people like Cheng isn’t what they do or how much they have; it’s how much they want to help and how far they want to go although they don’t have much to give.

Here is an example.
“Mom, have you worked out next week’s chores? Let Jim and me choose the cards. I can’t wait. It’s fun! ”
When Robert shouted out, his mother had already put all the cards on their big table. On the cards, there are some words like these, “sweep the floor, clean your bedroom, help mom cook, wash vegetables, make beds, feed the fish, cut the wood, clean the bathroom” and many others, Jim and Robert chose two cards for each day from Monday to Friday. Then they would hang them on the weekday task board. Jim likes to clean the bathroom, so he picked up the card “clean the bathroom”. Robert loves to make the bed so he picked up his favorite card. Jim again picked up “wash vegetables” and Robert chose “feed the fish”. Soon the two boys were happy to take away all the cards.

In recent years, books about the grammar, pronunciation and punctuation (标点) of English have been written by the dozen, and sold extremely well, reflecting people’s love of the English language. People want to protect the “correct” use of their language, but also to keep its ability to develop along with society. Lynne Truss’s book Eats, Shoots & Leaves is an excellent example of these two opposite ideas. Its title shows the way that punctuation can change meaning in a sentence. “Eats shoots and leaves” is a perfectly normal description of a panda’s diet: he eats the shoots(嫩芽) and leaves of bamboo trees. But the position of the comma (逗号) turns those nouns into verbs, and makes up a ridiculous little story: the panda eats (his dinner), he shoots (a gun), and he leaves (the building). It’s a silly joke, but it shows how changing something as simple as a comma can change the entire meaning of a sentence.
Published in 2003, Eats, Shoots & Leaves was an unexpectedly huge success. It is easy to assume the typical reader of this kind of book as the humourless type. However, the book has sold thousands and thousands of copies—it must be attractive to a wide range of people. The book’s winning secret is this: it makes some serious points about language and punctuation, but also has an amusing aspect, and uses stories and jokes to show its points. It has invited some tough criticism, too, especially from the US. On a broader range, Eats, Shoots & Leaves has opened up a lot of public argument on Truss’s ideas. Whether they agree with her or not, punctuation and grammar has become a popular topic to discuss.
In every generation there will be people who think that the standard of language is dropping, and who are more than happy to write to the newspapers to express their concern and opinions. Truss’s book also interest those who think that texting and blogging (博客) is lowering the standard of literacy(读写能力). Whether the standard of the English language is decreasing, or simply evolving into new forms, the success of Eats, Shoots & Leaves proves that this is a subject that many English speakers find interesting and important.

All eyes look up and widen. Nothing quiets a chatty group of teenagers faster than the promise of a story. This is a story I’ve told every February since I started teaching.
“In sixth grade,” begin. “I fell in love. His name was David. He had no interest in me, but I wrote his name all over my diary. You get the idea.”
They get the idea, laughing.
“So it was Valentine’s Day. I saw an envelope on my desk. With shaky hands, I opened it. There was a shiny picture of a queen with the heading, ‘To a Queen of a Valentine.’ I excitedly turned the valentine(情人节卡) over. At the bottom I saw the signature: David. Then my eyes travelled up to the writing above his signature. It read, ‘TO THE UGLIEST GIRL IN OUR CLASS.’”
Mouths drop open.
“It destroyed my Valentine’s Day. But I got over it. Now it has encouraged me to undo the cruelty of David.” I smile. “And that’s why we’ll exchange Valentine cards to celebrate kindness.”
“What should we write? And do we have to sign our names?” Someone asks when I handout the cards.
“Of course you sign your names. You can write something nice to anyone in the class. Remind them of something fun you remember about them.”
Watching them write is always fun. But the real fun comes when they read what people wrote to them. A student drew me a valentine of a queen with the words “TO THE PRETTIEST GIRL IN THE ROOM,” and everyone signed it. That one still hangs next to my desk.
After 20 years of teaching, perhaps few students remember the grammar I taught them. But if one student remembers the class they received one long-ago February, to me that makes it all worthwhile.

My daughter used a new app to clear up and improve some of my old photos. There were pictures of Mom, Dad, Nana, my brothers, me and my first dog Duke. Looking at them brought back so many loving, happy memories. I even used one as my computer screen saver (屏保).
It is a picture of me sitting in my favorite chair, across from the wood stove (炉子), next to a bookcase full of old books. I am wearing my special Snoopy sweatshirt and hugging Duke. There is a big smile on my face and a joyful twinkle (闪烁) in my eyes. It was how I spent a lot of my winter afternoons as a boy, hugging Duke and reading an old book.
It is strange too how 50 years later that boy still lives inside of me. I still love comfortable chairs, warm stoves, Snoopy clothes, hugging dogs and reading books on cold winter days. Yet, when I look in the mirror now, all I see is a thin face, gray hair, and lots of wrinkles (皱纹). The only thing that hasn’t completely changed is the eyes. They are hiding behind glasses now. Instead of innocence (天真), there is wisdom (智慧). But they still have that same joyful twinkle.
Looking at the little boy smiling at me from the computer screen and that 56-year-old man looking back at me in the mirror can be a bit confusing (困惑的) at times. They seem so different. Still, they are both me. We can’t stop aging, but we can remain both joyful and young at heart forever.
