March 25 is an important day in China. It is a day for school safety education. At school, the big accidents (事故) mainly are stampedes (踩踏), earthquakes and fires.

A stampede always happens in crowded places. When students around you begin to push, stand there and try to hold onto something. If you fall down in the crowd, put your hands around your head. Move to one side, and bend (弯曲) your body and legs.

Earthquakes happen all over the world. When you feel everything is moving, quickly get under a desk and hold on. If you are outdoors, find a place away from buildings, trees, and power lines (电线). In Japan, many schools take earthquake drills (演练) once a month. They help students stay calm in a real earthquake.

When there’s a fire, leave the classroom quickly. It’s better to put something wet over your mouth and nose. This way, you won’t breathe in (吸入) smoke. When there’s a fire, people can’t jump out of the window from higher than two storeys (楼层). They may hurt themselves. In the US, most school buildings have fire escapes (防火梯). They are usually made of steel and lie outside the building. People can get away from the fire and escape through a special door or a window.

We have some interesting and fun things for you this term. On September 21st, we have a school trip in the afternoon. October is a great month. On the 12th, we have a soccer ball game.

The word silk itself is beautiful. The story of silk started in China over 4, 000 years ago. One story says a silkworm’s cocoon (茧) fell into a woman’s teacup. Making silk was a protected secret in China for many years. In other countries, silk was very valuable. Often it was worth more than gold. It was said that the secret was finally given away when a queen left China for India. In her hair, she secretly carried many silkworms.

By the year 1 A.D., silk was sold as far west as Rome, and all along the Silk Road. Finally, around the year 300, silk also travelled from China to Japan. In 1522, the Spanish brought silkworms to Mexico.

Today people around the world still make many beautiful things from silk. But silk isn’t only beautiful. It looks easy to break, but actually it’s very strong. For example, people have already used it to make bicycle wheels. And some doctors even use silk threads in hospital. Silk is also lightweight and warm. This makes it great for clothes like winter jackets, trousers and shoes.
