A college student was asked to take part in an experiment. In the experiment, his eyes were covered with a small video camera. The camera was connected to a long plastic line which went into his mouth. A computer would change the video’s picture. The picture would travel through the plastic line as an electric current(电流), reaching the electrodes(电极板) inside the student’s mouth. The scientist would roll a ball towards his right side, left side, or centre, and the student would have to catch it. When the scientist rolled the ball, pain passed over the student’s tongue. For the position of the pain on the tongue, the student reached out his hand and caught the ball.

A lot of people don’t think about protecting their eyes before something goes wrong. There’s a lot we can do to keep our eyes healthy. Here are some of our tips.
We’ve always been told we should be getting 5 different kinds of fruit or vegetables a day. However, a study shows it would be much better to have 10 kinds of fruit and vegetables a day!
Don’t look at a computer screen all day. You should give your eyes a break. Please follow the 20-20-20 rule. Every 20 minutes look 20 feet into the distance for at least 20 seconds.
Even on cloudy days, ultraviolet light (UV) (紫外线) can harm your eyes. Make sure your sunglasses have 100% UV protection, this will mean you’ll be protected from both UVA and UVB radiation.
Every time you touch your eyes with unclean hands, you’re putting bacteria (细菌) into the eye area. Make sure hands are clean and dry when you are wearing your glasses.
A lot of people will say they don’t have the time to get their eyes checked. They might also think there’s no point because they aren’t in pain and they can see well. Regular sight tests are important and will help you be out of trouble before it can get worse.
A | Exercise regularly | D | Rest your eyes |
B | Eat more fruits and vegetables | E | Have regular eye exams |
C | Keep your hands clean | F | Wear sunglasses |

Everybody has a brain, but not many people know how the brain works. Some people believe that the brain is like the hard disk of a computer. We use it to store files—pictures, language (words, texts, sounds) and so on. Others compare the brain to a huge cupboard with lots of shelves and boxes in it. We put information into these boxes and hope to find it again later.
The brain is not A computer disk, And it isn’t a cupboard. Look at the picture here. It looks a bit like weeds(杂草)in a garden, doesn’t it? The picture actually shows a child’s neocortex—a part of the brain that controls sight and hearing. You can guess what happens—more “weeds” grow as the child gets older. Scientists call these neuronal(神经元的)networks. The networks grow around our neurons. -What makes them grow? Learning! “Learning is brain change,” says Professor James Zull from Case Western University in Cleveland, Ohio, USA. “Without learning, nothing changes in the brain. For every new word you learn in your English lesson, every problem you solve in maths, every new song you learn to sing, a neuronal network grows in your brain and the brain changes.”
The more neuronal networks we grow, the better we can think and the better we remember. You may wonder if there is anything you can do to make the networks in your brain grow better. Professor Zull says yes, there is. He says that brain change is strongest when a) you are interested in and like what you are learning, b) you are in control of what you learn and c) you get challenging tasks that make you think hard. Understanding a challenging task makes you feel good and develops your brain.

In fact, poor eyesight among Chinese primary and high school students went up from 59.2 percent to 70.6 percent in the first six months of 2020, according to the Ministry of Education (教育部).
To protect students’ eyesight, the Chinese government has worked out new requirements (要求) that will take effect on March 1st, 2022. For example, according to the requirements, the size of text in students’ textbooks should not be too small. Teachers should also avoid using projectors (投影仪) or other teaching helpers that are too bright, Beijing Daily reported.
There are also requirements for desks and classroom lights. For example, these lights should give off as little blue light as possible. Blue light is bad for our eyes, as it can kill the photoreceptor cells (感光细胞) we need for vision, according to Harvard Medical School. Many of the electronic products (电子产品) we use every day, such as our phones and computer screens, give off blue light.

We use emojis on Facebook, Twitter, and other social media platforms every day. But do you know there’s a World Emoji Day? Well, it’s a holiday held in July every year!
The holiday was created by Jeremy Burge as a way to popularize the usage of emojis. He also set up Emojipedia, a website where users can learn what emojis mean and how to use them. Since 2014, Emojipedia has celebrated World Emoji Day on July 17 because the date is shown on the calendar emoji on iPhones.
Invented in Japan in February 1999, emojis were first introduced to the world in 2011 by Apple in their iPhones. They were only pictures at the beginning, but now some big tech companies have added sounds into their emojis and Microsoft says 3D emojis will come out later. We usually use emojis when we are feeling lazy or at a loss for words. ▲. One court judge in England used a smiley face emoji in a document to make it easy to explain the court’s decision to children.
Celebrating Emoji Day is fun while offering many possibilities for creativeness. For example, each year, Facebook and Twitter celebrate the World Emoji Day with various events online. It’s time to vote for your favorite emoji or create your own emoji. You can even take up the challenge to communicate only by using emojis for a whole day.

【推荐3】Scientists believe the Earth is 4.6 billion years old. However, the mountains, valleys (山谷), hills, rivers, deserts and forests we see today are much younger than that. For example, Mount Qomolangma is about 60 million years old and the Amazon rainforest is only 10 million years old. The youngest sea in the world is the Baltic Sea, at about 15000 years old.
The Earth is always changing because of volcanoes (火山), earthquakes and of course, wind and rain. Some of these changes are very slow and others are quick. Water and ice can make very great changes to the planet. For example, rivers of ice can cut through mountains and make lakes and deep valleys. Many volcanoes are under the oceans and sometimes they become new islands. This is happening in the South Pacific.
It’s normal for our planet to change, but at the moment, scientists think it’s changing faster than usual. Some deserts are growing and many forests are getting smaller. The weather is getting wetter in some places and drier in others, and there are more big storms. According to the research, the sea level will continue to rise in the next hundred years. As a result, many cities will possibly be covered by water and much of the most productive farming areas will be lost. Some island countries are likely to disappear on the map of the world.
These changes will bring great harm to the planet. However, they can be beneficial to some people. For example, as the Arctic (北极) is getting warmer, some people in Greenland now own businesses and sell vegetables they grow on their land. That wasn’t possible in the far north 50 years ago. Farmers in Greenland like the warm weather and hope it will continue.

To help solve this problem, three students from Xi’an Aerospace City No. 1 High School made a smart trash bin that uses voice recognition. The trash bin can even understand different Chinese local languages.
“We find it’s troublesome to find the right trash bin for our daily life and we know that many people face the same problem. That’s why we want to give a hand,” said Zhang Zehua, 17, who was building a garbage-sorting database (数据库). Starting last April, the three students built databases and made a sorting system for their smart bin. They learned how to use less energy and allow the bin to work for a longer time at a lower temperature.
Team member Zhang Zhenjie, 16, had a hard task to complete. He was collecting data. While talking with his classmates, he found that people had several different ways to describe the same piece of garbage. So he made some change of the voice recognition system and greatly increased its accuracy. He also counted how much garbage a family makes daily. This helped him choose the right space for the bin.
The three teenagers are getting a patent (专利) for their design and looking for producers. They will continue to improve the trash bin and introduce it to more communities in the future. Maybe more families will use their smart bins in the future.

Use paper with lines
Using paper with lines can keep you writing straight instead of up or down when you write English words or sentences. Those lines on the paper can help you to write words in the right size. Be sure to fill the lined space completely. And make sure those capital letters are written properly.
Slow down
If your writing is hard to read, try slowing down a little. For some kids, going slower makes the handwriting clear. If you write too fast , it’s hard for you to stop where you should, and even worse, you may make more mistakes .
Hold your pencil right
When you hold your pencil the correct way, writing is much easier. Some kids press down really hard when they write. That makes the handwriting not nice. Try to be relaxed and don’t hold the pencil so hard. Let your writing appear(显得) nice and clean. If you do so, people will guess you are a student with a good habit.
Draw more pictures
Drawing can improve your handwriting. You need to use the skills to control your pencil better when you are drawing pictures. Even though you have no chance to draw at school, you can practice by yourself at home.
Handwriting is very important. Imagine you are a world-famous movie star or a well-known sports player, what do you do when your fan run up to you? Give them your signatures, of course!
