We see with our eyes and taste with our tongues. Ears are for hearing, skin is for feeling and noses are for smelling. Would anyone say that ears can smell, or that tongues can see? Actually, yes. Paul Bach-y-Rita, a scientist at the University of Wisconsin, believes that the senses can changeable. For example, a tongue can be used for seeing. The brain, as we know, is a complex organ(复杂的器官). Even when part of it is hurt, it will try to carry out the same function by sending the function to another area of the brain.
A college student was asked to take part in an experiment. In the experiment, his eyes were covered with a small video camera. The camera was connected to a long plastic line which went into his mouth. A computer would change the video’s picture. The picture would travel through the plastic line as an electric current(电流), reaching the electrodes(电极板) inside the student’s mouth. The scientist would roll a ball towards his right side, left side, or centre, and the student would have to catch it. When the scientist rolled the ball, pain passed over the student’s tongue. For the position of the pain on the tongue, the student reached out his hand and caught the ball.
If the brain can see a ball through a camera and a wet tongue, blindness and deafness can be overcame.

A lot of people don’t think about protecting their eyes before something goes wrong. There’s a lot we can do to keep our eyes healthy. Here are some of our tips.

We’ve always been told we should be getting 5 different kinds of fruit or vegetables a day. However, a study shows it would be much better to have 10 kinds of fruit and vegetables a day!

    2

Don’t look at a computer screen all day. You should give your eyes a break. Please follow the 20-20-20 rule. Every 20 minutes look 20 feet into the distance for at least 20 seconds.

    3

Even on cloudy days, ultraviolet light (UV) (紫外线) can harm your eyes. Make sure your sunglasses have 100% UV protection, this will mean you’ll be protected from both UVA and UVB radiation.

    4

Every time you touch your eyes with unclean hands, you’re putting bacteria (细菌) into the eye area. Make sure hands are clean and dry when you are wearing your glasses.

    5

Everybody has a brain, but not many people know how the brain works. Some people believe that the brain is like the hard disk of a computer. We use it to store files—pictures, language (words, texts, sounds) and so on. Others compare the brain to a huge cupboard with lots of shelves and boxes in it. We put information into these boxes and hope to find it again later.

The brain is not A computer disk, And it isn’t a cupboard. Look at the picture here. It looks a bit like weeds(杂草)in a garden, doesn’t it? The picture actually shows a child’s neocortex—a part of the brain that controls sight and hearing. You can guess what happens—more “weeds” grow as the child gets older. Scientists call these neuronal(神经元的)networks. The networks grow around our neurons. -What makes them grow? Learning! “Learning is brain change,” says Professor James Zull from Case Western University in Cleveland, Ohio, USA. “Without learning, nothing changes in the brain. For every new word you learn in your English lesson, every problem you solve in maths, every new song you learn to sing, a neuronal network grows in your brain and the brain changes.”

The more neuronal networks we grow, the better we can think and the better we remember. You may wonder if there is anything you can do to make the networks in your brain grow better. Professor Zull says yes, there is. He says that brain change is strongest when a) you are interested in and like what you are learning, b) you are in control of what you learn and c) you get challenging tasks that make you think hard. Understanding a challenging task makes you feel good and develops your brain.

1. What’s the main idea of the first paragraph?
A.The brain—a fantastic computer.B.What people believe about the brain.
C.How to make your brain stronger.D.Our brain—a growing system.
2. What can we learn from the passage 2?
A.Learning makes our neuronal networks grow.B.Seeing a challenging task develops our brain.
C.We remember better when things are easy.D.There’s nothing we can do to make us smarter.
3. What’s the best title for the passage?
A.Interest is the best teacherB.Meeting life’s challenges
C.Never too late to learnD.Learning is brain change

【推荐3】With her eyes always feeling tired as she prepared for an exam, 16-year-old Sun Ran went to the hospital with her parents in January. She was shocked when she found out that her eyesight dropped from 5.0 to 4.6. “Some of my friends have had the same experience recently,” Sun said.

In fact, poor eyesight among Chinese primary and high school students went up from 59.2 percent to 70.6 percent in the first six months of 2020, according to the Ministry of Education (教育部).

To protect students’ eyesight, the Chinese government has worked out new requirements (要求) that will take effect on March 1st, 2022. For example, according to the requirements, the size of text in students’ textbooks should not be too small. Teachers should also avoid using projectors (投影仪) or other teaching helpers that are too bright, Beijing Daily reported.

There are also requirements for desks and classroom lights. For example, these lights should give off as little blue light as possible. Blue light is bad for our eyes, as it can kill the photoreceptor cells (感光细胞) we need for vision, according to Harvard Medical School. Many of the electronic products (电子产品) we use every day, such as our phones and computer screens, give off blue light.

What about other rules? The government has taken action to protect students’ eyesight in China. In May 2020, the National Health Commission (国家卫生健康委员会) asked schools to make sure that students should have at least two hours of outdoor activities a day.
