In August, it is very hot and wet in the southern part of the United States. People there have heart trouble and other kinds of health problems during this month. In the Northeast and the Middle-West, it is very hot at some times and very cold at other times. People in these states have more heart trouble after the weather changes in February or March.
The weather can also influence intelligence. For example, in a 1983 report by scientists, IQ of a group of students was very high when a very strong wind came, but after the strong wind, their IQ was 10% lower. The wind can help people have more intelligence. Very hot weather, on the other hand, can make it lower. Students in many schools of the United States often get worse on exams in the hot months of the year(July and August).
Weather also has a strong influence on people’s feelings. Winter may be a bad time for thin people. They usually feel cold during these months. They might feel unhappy during cold weather. But fat people may have a hard time in hot summer. At about 18℃, people become stronger.
Low air pressure(气压) may make people forgetful. People leave more bags on buses and in shops on low-pressure days. People feel best at a temperature of about 18℃.
Are you feeling sad, tired, forgetful or unhappy today? It may be the weather’s problem.

Much of what we know and believe has been taught to us by others, and we often accept this information without spending much time thinking it over for ourselves.
In today’s world, we are being presented with information, ideas and beliefs, but many of them are against each other. Psychology (心理学) tells us that if we hear an idea enough times, or if it comes from someone we respect (尊敬), we will probably believe that idea. In these cases, we base our opinions on the opinions of others. If each of us does not think about this information for ourselves and come to our own conclusions (结论), we will become nothing more than parrots (鹦鹉) qu oting the opinions of others.
Examples of spreading fake news without thought can be seen on the Internet. Some people believe whatever they read and then share the story without thinking about the facts. All it takes is one quick click (点击) of the “share” button, and the story travels on its way to influence even more unthinking readers. This can cause serious problems.
If we just stop for a moment to think about what we read and hear, and form our own opinions, we will be more thoughtful, more independent, and more creative people, but few take that time. Yet we need not lose heart over this bad habit. In fact, simply becoming aware (意识到) of it is the first step towards correcting it. Once we become aware that we tend (趋向) to hold opinions and beliefs without thinking them through, we can change that pattern of behavior. Hopefully, we can learn to experience and enjoy the “discomfort of thought” and form our own opinions.

Setting personal goals can give your life a sense of direction. Goal setting is used by top sports players, successful business people and achievers in all fields. Before you set personal goals, think about what you want to achieve with your life.
Try to set goals in some of the following categories (类别):
Education—Will you achieve the educational goals after finishing high school? Are you still growing and learning?
Family—What kind of relationship do you want with your parents and other family members?
Creative—Do you want to achieve any artistic goals?
Career—What job do you want to take when you grow up? What do you need to make your dream come true?
Public Service—Do you want to make the world a better place?
Physical—Are you fit enough to do the things you want to do?
Pleasure—How do you want to enjoy yourself?
To help make the process more manageable, divide your goals into smaller tasks. For example, if you want to reach a main goal in five years, set a three-year goal, a one-year goal, a three-month goal and a one-month goal. Then create a daily To-Do List of things that you should do today. When a goal is achieved, take the time to enjoy your success. This helps you build the self-confidence.
Remember, your goals can be changed as time goes on. But be sure your goals are the things you hope to achieve, not what your parents, family or teachers want.

“My dear dad, where are we going?” This has become the most popular question these days. It's a line from the theme song of Hunan TV station's reality show(真人秀) Where Are We Going, Dad?
“All of my classmates are big fans,” said Ning Yun,14, from Guangxi. “On Fridays, we remind(提醒) others: Don't forget to watch it tonight!”
In the show, five pairs of fathers and kids go to different places and finish interesting jobs. It's all about growing up. Clumsy(笨拙的) fathers learn to cook and look after their kids. The kids learn about teamwork and living and working by themselves.
In the show, Kimi, four years old, finds it hard to finish his work alone. “When I saw Kimi looking for his dad, I can't help laughing,” said Chen Yufang, 13, from Guangxi. “It reminded me of my first night at the school dormitory. I really felt the pain(痛苦) of growing up that night.”
When people see the fathers trying to help their kids, it also touches their hearts more or less. But now he sees it in a different way. “Guo Tao's son looks strongminded(意志坚强的). I think his parents give him some good examples. And I guess my father just wants me to be like that,” he said.

Every day, we spend time filling the Necessary Tasks Bottle with useful things, like making money, doing housework, buying food and paying bills. We then fill another bottle with Voluntary Tasks. These are things that we do for others, we may not enjoy, but we do them anyway This bottle gets filled with tasks like taking children to activities, cooking family meals, and washing clothes for family members, Those bottles are very important if we don't fill them each day.
However, we often forget to fill the third bottle-the Happiness Bottle. This is the bottle that we fill with activities that make us happy. First, look at why you do it. In other words, what’s the result of doing this thing? If your bad habit is shouting at people when you are unhappy or under pressure, what do you get from it? It may make you feel a little better for the moment. Or maybe you have a bad habit of leaving your homework undone. The result could be that you get more time to spend on the Internet!
Next, take a look on the other hand. What are you losing because of your habit? Shouting at other people is a bad habit because it makes people around you feel bad and unhappy. Leaving your homework undone is a bad habit because you may be punished by your teacher. Having more Internet time means that you are losing the chance to learn the things that you need to learn. But comets are not made of solid rocks like planets. A comet is a ball of dust, stones, and ice. Many people call comets dirty snowballs.
The “snowball” may be only a few miles across. But when the sun heats the “snowball,” much of it is changed to gases. The gases spread out and form the comet’s head, which may be thousands of miles across.
A comet moves fast in its trip around the sun. But when we see it, the comet does not seem to move. That’s because it is so far away. The moon moves fast, but when you look at it, you can’t see any motion(运动). That’s because the moon is far away.
Each year astronomers(天文学家) discover new comets. Some of them are seen only once. They make one trip around the sun and then go away out into space. The sun’s gravity cannot hold them.
Other comets, like Halley, keep returning. They have been captured by the sun. Halley’s earliest visit was probably 3,000 years ago. It may keep returning for another 3,000 years.
But every time a comet goes around the sun, the comet loses part of itself. Gases and dust are pulled out of the comet. That’s why Halley is now dimmer(暗淡的) than it used to be. Next time it visits us, in 2062, it may be even dimmer. Each visit it may get dimmer and dimmer, until it finally disappears.
