I am Wan Li from China. I came to the UK with my friends for a short visit. We are living with an English couple, Mr and Mrs Green, in the west of London. They have a wonderful four-bedroom house. This is a new house. It has two bathrooms and a garden with many beautiful flowers. I have a bedroom of my own.
There are some shopping centres and restaurants near the house, and the house is close to an underground station. It takes about thirty minutes to get to the centre of London.
I think a homestay may be a good choice for you if it is your first time to visit abroad. The local people are friendly and willing to help. If you happen to celebrate the holidays with them, you will get to know more about western culture and customs.

My name is Gina. I like Happy Cinema. It's the most popular. Many people go there to see the latest movies. But it's the most expensive in our town. I only go there three times a year.
I am Jason. I often go to June Cinema. Although it's the cheapest, it has the most comfortable seats. It's a little far from my home, but I can ride my bike to go there. On my way home, I often go to Uncle Bob's to eat a chicken hamburger. It's delicious.

Science fiction stories have imagined people in the future living in underground cities on Mars and in space stations far from the sun. But if humans are to survive in those terrible environments, they will need ways to grow food using limited resources. Photosynthesis (光合作用), by which plants turn sunlight into sugar, might not work.
Now, some scientists are wondering whether it’s possible to produce food more efficiently (高效) by giving up photosynthesis, just by growing plants in the dark.
The idea sounds as science fictional as cities on Mars. But a team of researchers has taken a first step toward realizing it with a study published in Nature Food. The research shows it is possible to grow algae, edible-yeast and fungi in the dark by providing them with a carbon-based chemical (碳基化学物质). The chemical didn’t come from plants, but instead was produced using solar electricity (太阳能发电). That is, this method took the place of natural photosynthesis with a partly artificial (人造的) process for turning sunlight into food. Their process is a kind of artificial photosynthesis, and the idea has been around for years and includes different ways of turning sunlight, water and CO2 into some chemicals.
The scientists are hopeful that this method could unlock new ways to produce food using less physical space and energy than traditional agriculture — including, perhaps, crops that can grow in the dark.
While other scientists doubt if it will ever be possible to redesign plant biology so completely, they are excited by the technology the researchers have invented and the team’s out-of-the-box idea about how to make food production more efficient.
“It’s worth keeping an open mind. The reward may be something we haven’t imagined yet.” said Lynn Rothschild, a senior research scientist at NASA’s Ames Research Center.

Foreign travelers are often puzzled (困惑的) in Japan because most streets there don’t have names. In Japan, people use landmarks but not street names. For example, the Japanese will say to travelers, “Go straight down to the corner. Turn left at the big hotel and go past a fruit market. The post office is across from the bus stop.”
In the country of the American Midwest, how do people tell the way? Usually there are not many landmarks. In many places there are no towns or buildings within miles (数里之内). People won’t use landmarks but tell you directions and distances. In Kansas, for example, people will say, “Go north two miles. Turn east, and then go another mile.” People in Los Angles, California, have no idea of distance on the map. They measure distance (测量距离) by telling time. “How far away is the post office?” you ask. “Oh,” they answer, “it’s about five minutes from here.” You say, “Yes, but how many miles away is it?” They don’t know.
People in Mexico never answer “I don’t know.” People in Yucatan think that “I don’t know” is not polite. They usually give an answer, often a wrong one. A visitor can lose his way very often in Yucatan!
One thing will help you everywhere. You might not understand a person’s words, but maybe you can understand his or her body language. He or she will usually turn and then point (指向) in the correct direction. Go in that direction, and you may find the post office!

In America, life for Cathy Taylor’s three children is very busy. On most days, one of her two sons has to practice basketball after school. The other son has to take piano lessons. And her daughter is going to football training. The tired children don’t get home until after 7:00p.m. They have a quick dinner, and then it’s time for homework.
In some families, competition starts very young and continues until the kids get older. Parents send their small kids to all kind of classes. And they are always comparing them with other children. Doctors say too much pressure is not good for a child’s development. Dr. Alice Green says all these activities can cause a lot of stress for children. Kids should have time to relax and think for themselves, too. Although it’s normal to want successful children, it’s even more important to have happy children.

Some people think it’s not easy to hurt an elephant because its skin is thick and hard. In fact, that’s wrong. Sometimes, a needle can also be very dangerous for the elephant.
People say elephants are afraid of mice. This is wrong, too. In fact, elephants have very poor eyesight, so they usually cannot see a mouse even if one comes very close to them. If a person has a good memory, people will say that he has an elephant memory. However, up to now, no study shows that elephants have a better memory than any other animal.
People also believe that when it is time for elephants to die, they will hide themselves in a so-called “elephant graveyard”. Often, hunters try to find such places to get ivories(象牙), but few people really find places like that. In fact, when elephants are old or get sick, they will stay in deep and secret caves until they get better or die.

A Letter From 2070 Hi, this is the year 2070. I have just turned 50, but I look like a person of 85. Because I don’t have enough water to drink. I’m afraid I don’t have much time left to live. I’m already one of the oldest people in this society. I remember when I was five years old. Everything was very different. There were lots of trees in the parks. I could enjoy a shower for half an hour. At that time, women had beautiful hair. Now we have to shave our heads to keep them clean without the use of water. I remember there were “Save Water” warnings(警告)in many places, but nobody paid attention. We believed water would last forever. Now, all the rivers and lakes are either dry or polluted. Water is much more expensive than gold. In the past, doctors suggested adults drink eight glasses of water a day. Now days, I am only allowed half a glass. People die young. When my son asks me about my childhood. I tell him about how pleasant it was to fish in the rivers and how healthy people were. When he asks, “Why is there no clean water now?” I feel very sorry. I belong to a person who turned a blind eye to all the warnings. I wish this letter could travel back in time and that it would make people living in the 2020s truly understand the importance of saving water. Best, Natalie |
