【推荐2】The Attractiveness of Fairy Tales
Almost any young person can tell you the basic plot of Cinderella or Hansel & Gretel or Little Red Riding Hood. What is it about this kind of stories that makes them so memorable and so loved by kids and adults?
What kids say about fairy tales
Michael says, “The magic is my favorite part about reading fairy tales.” Witches and warlocks (男巫), good fairies and evil trolls, characters who can transform into something more beautiful or an completely new shape inspire (鼓舞,激发) active imaginations and make kids feel like anything is possible. Zoe loves the adventures in fairy tales. Reading them lets me escape from the real world. Isabella, 8, seconds that saying, “I can use my imagination when I read these and visit places I could never really go.”
What educators say about fairy tales
Educators also love sharing fairy tales with kids to build up their reading comprehension and writing skills. Kristen, a second grade teacher likes to use these stories to introduce the topic of perspective (视角). “We read The Three Little Pigs and then another story from the Big Bad Wolf’s perspective. They loved it!” Jenni, a fifth grade teacher, uses fairy tales like The True Story of the Three Little Pigs to kick off a creative writing unit with her students. “Reading a book like this opens up a new world to them as writers. Knowing that it's okay to take a familiar storyline of it gets their creative writing juices flowing.”
Favorite fairy tales and the Disney factor
When asked to pick their favorite fairy tales, the answers reached from classics to modern twists to Disney’s versions. Kyra, 12, appreciates the depth and complexity (复杂性) of classic fairy tales. “They help me think about real life problems and give me hope.” Jack, 12, loves books like A Tale Dark and Grimm where “the tales take a twist and who you thought was bad becomes good.”
While many kids first get introduced to these stories through Disney books and movies, the “Disneyfication” of fairy tales is not for everyone. “The Disney versions are way too cheesy and wrap them all up with a ‘happily ever after’ formulaic (公式化的) ending. I prefer the modern takes on the fairy tales like The Land of Stories where things are more complicated.” shares Nicole.

I do not remember myself crying for this reason again. In fact, I think I cried very little when I wassaying goodbye to my friends and relatives. When we were leaving I thought about all the places I wasgoing to see-the strange and magical places I had known only from books and pictures. The country Iwas leaving never to come back was hardly in my head then.
The four years that followed taught me the importance of optimism (乐观主义), but the idea did notcome to me at once. For the first two years in New York I was really lost-having to study in threeschools as a result of family moves. I did not quite know what I was or what I should be. Mother remarried, and things became even more complex for me. Some time passed before my stepfather and Igot used to each other. I was often sad, and saw no end to "the hard times."
My responsibilities in the family increased a lot since I knew English better than everyone else at home. I wrote letters, filled out forms, translated at interviews with immigration officers, took my grandparents to the doctor and translated there, and even discussed telephone bills with company representatives.
From my experiences I have learned one important rule: Almost all common troubles eventually go away! Something good is certain to happen in the end when you do not give up, and just wait a little! I believe that my life will turn out all right, even though it will not be that easy.

Researchers say letting your hot drinks cool off could help you avoid some kinds of cancer. Researchers at the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) found evidence that drinks at temperatures above 65 degrees Celsius, when swallowed, can cause cancer of the esophagus (食道). The researchers examined findings from other studies where tea and coffee were often served at 70degrees Celsius or above. Those studies were completed in Iran, China and South America.
In developed countries, health experts have linked esophageal cancer to smoking and alcoholic drinks. However, this form of cancer is more common in areas where people drink beverages at very high temperatures.
In Europe and the United States, many people drink coffee and tea at temperatures around 60degrees Celsius. And they often add milk which lowers the temperature considerably. However, tea﹣drinkers in Iran and mate﹣drinkers in South America often enjoy their beverages at closer to 70degrees Celsius.
The researchers note that South Americans not only drink their mate very hot, they also drink it through a metal straw. This sends the scalding liquid directly into the throat.
The findings, however, are good news for coffee drinkers. In 1991, the World Health Organization listed coffee as possibly carcinogenic (致癌的). WHO officials have since changed their position on that listing. They now suggest that the temperature of your hot drink is a greater risk factor than the actual drink itself.
The results suggest that drinking very hot beverages is one probable cause of esophageal cancer and that it is the temperature, rather than the drinks themselves, that appears to be responsible.

The task of naming a virus is no less important than naming a person. When a disease breaks out, the official(官方的) naming of a new virus is often late and may lead to many problems. Over the past ten years, some improper names have caused problems. In 2009, the "swine flu(猪流感)" was widely used before the official name, HINI virus, was announced. This led Egypt to kill all of its pigs even though it didn't spread among people who hadn't been near pigs. In 2015, the name MERS(Middle East Respiratory Syndrome, 中东呼吸综合征)made people of this region angry.
So in 2015, the World Health Organization(WHO)announced that the names of viruses should be easy to remember but avoid being named after places, people, animals and foods. Following these rules, the new coronavirus we are suffering from was named "COVID-19" by the WHO on Feb 11, 2020. In this name, "CO" means "corona", "VI" sands for "virus" and "D" means "disease".

I always had the dream to dance. When I was young, I would dance around and around in the fields of wildflowers that grew in my backyard. Reality woke me up when I heard a voice saying, “I don’t know why you try to dance, Anna. You don’t have the talent to be a ballerina (芭蕾舞演员).” Hearing that, I fell to the ground and cried for hours.
We lived in the countryside by a lake. My mother didn’t like anything because she thought nothing was ever perfect in her life. She dreamed of a different life but she ended up living in the countryside, far away from the city where she believed her dreams would come true.
I enjoyed hanging out (闲逛) by the water. I used to sit there for hours and look at my reflection. Once the waves came, my reflection would be washed away, just like my dream to dance.
As I grew older, I began to realize my dream was even born because of something that was inside me. The dream I had was never cared for, so it slowly died. When I finally woke up from many years of dreaming, 1 realized that I couldn’t only dance in the wildflowers. I had to move on to the stage.

Scrooge had a very small fire, but Bob’s was even smaller. Bob couldn’t add any more coal because Scrooge kept the coal scuttle in his room.
“A Merry Christmas, uncle!” cried a happy voice. It was Scrooge’s nephew Fred.
“Bah!” said Scrooge. “Humbug! Merry Christmas! What reason have you got to be merry? You are poor.” “OK, then,” replied Fred cheerfully. “What reason have you got to be sad? You are rich. Don’t be cross, Uncle!”.
“I live in a world of fools. What’s Christmas time to you? It’s a time for paying bills without money. It’s a time for finding yourself a year older, but no richer.” said Scrooge.
“Uncle,” said Fred, “I have always thought of Christmas time as a kind, charitable, happy time. And so, Uncle, although Christmas has never put any gold or silver in my pocket, I think it has done me good. And it will do me good. And I say, God bless it!”
The clerk in the cell applauded. Then realizing his mistake, he poked the fire and put out the last little spark forever.
Then Scrooge’s nephew invited him to have dinner the next day, but he refused. As his nephew left the room, two kind old gentlemen came in.
“At Christmas time, Mr Scrooge,” said the gentleman, “we should give to the poor who have no shelter or food. They really suffer at this time of year.”
“Are there no prisons? And the workhouses? Are they still in operation?” asked Scrooge.
“They are, but I wish they were not.” replied the gentleman. “We don’t think that workhouses do enough for people. Many people prefer to die than to go there. So we are trying to raise money to buy the poor some clothes and food. What shall I put you down for?”
“Nothing. Let them die. There are too many people in the world anyway. Good afternoon, gentlemen!” Scrooge said. The gentlemen left. And Scrooge felt pleased with himself.

Country music uses simple music and words to express everyday feelings such as loneliness, love, and sadness. That is to say, country music describes life. It talks about friends and enemies, trucks and roads, farms and crops…People in many parts of the world like country music, because everyone can understand what the music is about.
Country Western music became popular first among cowboys(牛仔) in the American West countryside. Cowboys had to take care of cows day and night. When they were alone with the cows, they often sang beautiful and peaceful songs to calm__the__animals and to overcome their own fear. They were not welleducated(接受良好教育的), so they sang about their daily life in very simple words. They played the guitar, the violin, and other instruments. In the south of America, many people added instruments from their homes, like bottles and spoons. When cowboys visited their friends and families on holidays like Thanksgiving, they usually sang and played country Western music.
In recent years, many musicians have made country Western music a little different from that in the past. These changes make the songs sound even better.Today singers such as Garth Brooks, Reba McEntire, Emmylou Harris, Lyle Lovett,Eddie Rabbitt, LeAnn Rimes, Randy Travis and a group called Alabama are singing and playing in different styles. They have brought country Western music more and more fans from all over the world.

The Wildlife Park has lots of different animals and birds. Some are native(当地的) to Australia and can only be found there. There are more than 500 animals there, including kangaroos(袋鼠),koalas and crocodiles(鳄鱼).They are kept in their natural environment. I like the Wildlife Park better than a zoo. In zoos, most of the animals are in cages.
We first spent some time with the kangaroos. We could touch and feel them. It was very exciting to be so close to them. There were koalas there too. They looked very cuddly(令人想拥抱的). Although we couldn't carry koalas, I could take a photo with one. It is a wonderful souvenir(纪念品) of my holiday in Sydney.
The Wildlife Park has plenty of freshwater crocodiles and saltwater crocodiles. Some of them are very big and scary(吓人的)with huge teeth! I did not want to get too close to them.
There was also a bird show. The keepers(饲养员)showed us different kinds of birds. I saw an old parrot. It could “talk” and made a great impression on me. I enjoy the trip very much. There was so much to see.
