What do you think of different kinds of reference books(参考书>? We did a survey. Here’re some of their answers.
Liu Yang
In some ways, reference books (参考书) are useful. They help us understand textbooks better. For example, if we can’t learn a language point well in English class, a reference book can help us to review the point. So I think it’s better to have such books.
Wang Qian
Reference books have some disadvantages. Some reference books show answers to the exercises in textbooks. This isn’t very good. Students will just copy the answers directly instead of thinking for themselves. Day after day, students won’t listen carefully in class.
Zheng Xia
Sometimes, reference books are useful. Some reference books show something a little bit more difficult than the textbooks. They challenge us and let us reach a higher level in our studies. So if you want to learn more, reference books are needed.
Liu Wei
I don’t think reference books are very helpful. If we listen to our teachers carefully and solve the problems at school, this is enough to grasp (掌握>all the knowledge. Besides, the school has already gives us a lot of homework. More reference books will only make us sick of studying. And for some subjects like English , if you want to learn well, the best way is to speak, not just to do exercises.

Exams are a fact of school life for most people. Almost everyone worries about exams and feels stressed, although they have prepared well for them. A little stress caused by the exams is useful as it can sharpen (变得清晰) your mind and encourage you to do well. But too much stress can stop you working to the best of your abilities, so it’s important not to let it get out of control. Here are some ideas to help you.
If you want to avoid unnecessary exam stress, you must prepare carefully for exams. Firstly, try to find a copy of the syllabus (教学大纲) for each subject. This tells you what you need to know and gives you the topics for revision (复习). Secondly, make a weekly revision timetable chart and display in your study place. Lastly, record the dates and times for each of your exams in your planner or diary and make a copy to put on your wall at home.
During your exam period, you want your brain to work at its very best, so build in relaxation time before bed, avoid staying up late to review and try to go to bed early to get enough sleep. If you have difficulty answering a question, leave it and move on to the next one—don’t spend time tying yourself to each question.
You are not alone while dealing with the stress. Call psychological (心理的) hotline to share your worries and get help from others going through the same experience. Remember that things may feel stressful right now, but it won’t last forever. And the rest of your life will still be there.

In those days people spelt words in different ways which you might find interesting. But it made reading English much more difficult. So dictionaries were invented to encourage everybody to spell the same. In fact, an English dictionary like the kind you use today wasn't made until the time of the Qing Dynasty.
The largest dictionary in the world is the Oxford English Dictionary, or OED for short. The idea for this dictionary came from an important meeting in Britain in 1857. Twenty-two years later, Oxford University asked James Murray to be the editor of its new dictionary.
Murray had not been to college. At the age of fourteen, he left his village school in Scotland and taught himself while working in a bank. Later he became a great teacher. After Oxford gave him the job, Murray had a place built in the garden behind his house to do his work. Part of it was one metre underground. In winter he had to wear a heavy coat and put his feet in a box to keep warm. Every morning, Murray got out of bed at five o'clock and worked several hours before breakfast. Often he would work by candle light into the evening.
Murray hoped to finish the new dictionary in ten years. But after five years, he was still adding words for the letter A! Then others went to work with Murray, and his two daughters were among them. He worked on the dictionary until he was very old. Forty-four years later, in 1928, other editors finished it. It had more than 15,000 words in twelve books. And you thought your English dictionary was big!

Scott Kelly, an American astronaut, returned to earth on March 2, 2016. He was taller by nearly 1.5 inches (3.81 cm) when he landed on Earth after his 340-day space mission on the International Space Station (ISS).
His change in height, which lasted about two days, raised the question: What are the effects of a long-term stay in space?
As you probably know, there is no gravity in space. This not only causes difficulties in everyday actions like eating, walking and sleeping, but also problems for the human body.
The first problem is the air. Without gravity, carbon dioxide cannot spread during breathing, but gathers around the body and causes headaches. More than that, human feelings of movement are affected, which could make people feel sick.
The body’s fluids(液体) don’t work well in weightlessness, making blood flow upward instead of down to the lower legs, and astronauts’ faces become fatter than normal. Gaps between bones also become larger because humans cannot stand up straight. The spine(脊柱) can also get bigger in zero gravity.
In addition, human bodies become weaker because of the lack of gravity and space to move around in. Some astronauts said that after they returned, their muscles hurt and their skin became very sensitive(敏感的). Kelly said during his first press conference, “It was almost like my body was on fire wherever I sat or lay or walked.”
However, the research into the effects of long-term space flight on human bodies and minds never stops. There are many actions that astronauts can take in space. They can take vitamin D for bone growth, wear special belts on their legs to keep blood in their lower bodies and do strength coaches’ exercises. The fans in the ISS also help spread carbon dioxide around. “We will do further research.” NASA Administrator Charles Bolden said, “I believe it will be meaningful to human-being.”
1. Something occured to Kelly’s body when he finished his space mission, didn’t it?
2. People may _____________, if carbon dioxide cannot spread during breathing.
3. What will happen to astronauts’ faces in space?
4. Why did Kelly feel burned when he was sleeping according to the text?
5. What can astronauts do to keep fit in space?
6. Do you agree that the research is meaningful to human-being? Why?

Struggling(挣扎)with this, he left everything behind and went into the forest. There, he met an old man who had lived there for a long time. He shared his story with the old man. “Can you give me one good reason not to give up?” he asked the old man.
“Look,” the old man said, pointing to two plants. “Do you see that fern and bamboo there?”
“Yes,” the man answered.
“When I planted the fern and bamboo seeds, I took very good care of them. In a short period of time, the fern quickly grew from the earth,” the old man went on.
“Although I watered and took care of the bamboo seed for years, it did not sprout. There was no sign of growth. But I did not give up on the bamboo seed and went on looking after it. In the fifth year, a small sprout came out of the earth. And within six months, the tree grew a hundred feet tall.
“The little bamboo tree had been growing underground for the past four years, developing a root system strong enough for its ground growth in the fifth year. If it hadn’t done this, it would not be as strong as it is now. So you know, all the time you were struggling, you were actually growing strong roots,” the old man said.

Once there was a businessman who was really deep in debt. He was not able to think of any way to get out of debt. While he was sitting there, an old man appeared, sat down next to him and said. “I can see that something is troubling you...”

The old man put his hand into his pocket, took out a cheque book and asked the businessman his name. Then, he gave a cheque to the businessman and said, “Take this money. Meet me here, after one year from today, and you can pay me back at that time.”
After giving that cheque, the old man got up and walked away. The businessman had mixed feelings. He looked at the cheque and saw that it was cheque of $500,000 signed by Warren Buffet (one of the richest men in the world). He couldn’t believe how lucky he was.
