I was nine years old, walking down the cold and wet streets of Springfield, with a bag of magazines on my shoulder. That day, I came to the company finally, the owner, Mr. Rader, had always taken me there to ask his workers if they wanted any magazines.
Shaking off the rain like a wet dog, I went into Mr. Rader’s office. After a quick look he took me over to the fireplace. Noticing the hole in the top of my shoe, he said, “Come with me!” pulling me into his car. We stopped in front of a shoe shop. Inside, a salesman fitted me with the finest pair of shoes I had ever seen. I felt about 10 feet tall when I got up in them. “We’d like a pair of new socks, too.” Mr. Rader said.

The summer holidays came and there was no school. Tom didn’t want to think about Muff Potter and Injun Joe, but it wasn’t easy. At night, when he was in bed, he saw Injun Joe’s scary face in the dark, and he couldn’t sleep. But he couldn’t talk to anyone about it. Tom really wanted to get away from here. He asked his friend Joe Harper to go and live on Jackson’s Island(岛) just like last summer. They also invited a new friend Huck.
Jackson’s Island was in the Mississippi, three miles south of St. Petersburg. Nobody lived there. That night three boys in a small boat went down the river to Jackson’s Island. When they got there, they made a fire under a big old tree. Then they cooked some of the meat over the fire, and they think it is the best dinner in the world! Soon, they stopped talking, their eyes closed, and they slept.
The next morning Tom woke up with the sun on his head and a smile on his face. After they had breakfast, they heard some noises, and then ran across the island to look down the river. There were twenty or more boats on the water. Every boat in St. Petersburg was out.
“What are they doing?” asked Joe.
“They’re looking for a dead(死的) body, I think,” said Huck. “They did that last summer when Bill Turner fell in the river and drowned(溺亡).”
“Who’s dead, do you think?” asked Joe.
Tom cried excitedly, “I know who’s dead! It’s us! They’re looking for us!”

My parents prepared everything for my journey. My plane was due (预期) to leave at 9:30 a.m. and arrive in two hours. I phoned the English family who I would stay with and they told me they would wait for me at the airport.
Unluckily my plane to London was delayed. I tried to phone the English family again but I couldn’t speak to them because they had already left home for the airport.
When I arrived in London, it was already 1:30 p.m. I went to get my luggage but I couldn’t find it. I became very worried. Luckily, the airport staff was very helpful and efficient. I didn’t wait long — they found it 10 minutes later.
My English family were still waiting for me! I was so happy! Then my new life in London began. My English family were quite kind. I learned a lot of English because I spent most of the day talking in English. I played computer games with the little boy in my English family. I also taught him how to play chess. Sometimes I told him stories I learned from my family.
I missed my family during my stay in London, but I also felt sad when my stay there came to an end. My English family held a party for me. I enjoyed it very much. I’ll never forget that summer in London! It is one of the most wonderful experiences I’ve ever had.

No one can change the weather. But if we read the signs correctly around us, we can know how the weather will be. This way of telling what the weather will be like on the following day or two is called weather forecasting. For many centuries and in all countries, people have studied the weather and tried to make weather forecasting. Rings around the sun are a sign of coming rain. Many people feel in their bones the coming of wet weather. Their joints(关节)ache. Some birds fly high if the fine weather is coming, but they fly near the ground if rainy or stormy weather is on the way. It is probably because of the insects which they are hunting fly low. If you see a rainbow during rainy weather, this is a sign that the weather will become clear and fine. Such rainbows come in the evening. If the stars twinkle clearly at night, then fine weather will continue. If a fog appears in the evening just above a river, then the day will be warm. If the sunset is mostly red in color, then the morning, rainy weather will probably come. Most of the above sayings have been made by the people who have used their eyes and brains to make weather forecasting.

I have learned over the past years that sometimes when I lose, I get a lot more out of it than winning. Also, I find a lot of times in sports, people are getting too caught up(深陷其中)in the game instead of just having fun. The real purpose of sports is to have fun and learn life lessons along the way.
I greatly encourage you to be a part of the school sports. Even if you are not the best, you can still have fun. Sports give people a great and healthy way of spending free time, instead of lying around playing with cellphones. Sports also give us a sense of achievement. There isn't a better feeling than to have done something fun and productive for my day.
I think that we all need sports to give us courage. If we try hard in sports, we usually do well. If we did the same in study, we would all be champions. Another reason why I encourage you to play sports is that it's just fun. Without sports, our lives would just be boring. So as you may be able to tell, sports are amazing!
Our coaches not only teach us to play sports, but show class(风度) and good sportsmanship(运动员精神) while playing them. It's never fun to have the winner to rub it in your face(炫耀) when you lose. That's why our coaches teach us to show class when we lose; also, when coaches get onto you, don't get down. They only want to see you improve and learn from what they say. In fact, if they don't shout loudly when you do badly, you should start worrying, because they are giving up on you.
Overall, sports are great! They bring out the best and worst of us. You can gain a lot from them! However, we can't let sports get too serious to where it brings down all the fun. So to have the most fun in sports, you just need try your best and not worry so much about the winning or losing.
1. The underlined phrase "get onto you" in Paragraph 4 probably means ________.A."point out your mistakes" | B."spend time with you" |
C."worry about your future" | D."agree with you" |
A.Sports bring us great fun only if we are good at them. |
B.Sports give us the best way of spending free time. |
C.We can get more from winning than losing. |
D.We should take pleasure in doing sports. |
A.Are we too caught up? | B.To win or to gain? |
C.Are sports really great? | D.For honor or for health? |

Our clothes were always old and our food was usually cheap and simple. However, we were always satisfied with our hot chocolate, which was made in a traditional way handed down from my grandmother to my mother.
At that time, there was no store to buy anything we needed. We just had powdered cocoa (可可粉) in our camp. Mum would set an old coffee pot at the side of the fire and slowly warm the milk, adding chocolate and sugar, and stirring (搅摔) until they became thick and rich brown. The wonderful smell of chocolate filled the camp.
More than once, I could remember people that passed by stepped into our camp to enjoy mother’s work. And mum always gave these strangers some hot chocolate to enjoy.
Once we had to stay in our tent for days because of a terrible rainstorm. Every morning I was woken up by the sweet smell of Mum’s hot chocolate.
Now, many years have passed. I have told my family a lot about Mum, and it seems that nothing brings back those warm memories better than sitting around the fire at night and tasting sweet hot chocolate.
