Once upon a time there lived an old man. He had three sons. One day, he called them together and said, "Sons, I will die soon. To my oldest son I give half my camels, to my second, one-third(三分之一), and to my youngest, one-ninth (九分之一)." Soon after that he died.

Now, the old man had seventeen camels, and the three brothers didn’t know how to do as their father said. They thought a long time about the problem, and it seemed that they must either kill some of the camels and cut them into pieces, or disobey their father. At last they went to their father’s old friend and asked for his advice. As soon as he heard their story, he said, "I will help you. I was a good friend of your father’s. I am old. I have only one camel, but take it-it is yours."

The three sons thanked the old man and took his camel. Now they found it was easy to do as their father wished, The oldest took half- that was nine camels; the second took one-third, that was six; and the youngest took one-ninth, that was two.

After each had got his camels, they found that there was still a camel there. So, to show their thanks to their father’s friend, they gave the camel back to him.

【推荐3】Charlie entered the shop and laid fifty pence (便士) on the counter (柜台).

“One Wonka’s Whipple-Scrumptious Fudgemallow Delight,” he said, remembering how much he loved the one he had on his birthday.

The man behind the counter looked fat. He turned around and reached behind him for the chocolate bar, then he turned back and handed it to Charlie. Charlie grabbed it and quickly tore off the wrapper and took a big bite. Then he took another … and another… and oh, the joy of being able to put large pieces of something sweet and solid into one’s mouth!

“You look like you wanted that one, sonny,” the shopkeeper said pleasantly.

Charlie nodded, and his mouth was filled with chocolate.

The shopkeeper put Charlie’s change on the counter. “Take it easy,” he said. “It’ll give you a stomachache if you eat it like that without chewing (咀嚼).”

Charlie went on wolfing the chocolate. He couldn’t stop. And in less than half a minute, the whole thing had disappeared down his throat. He was quite out of breath, but he felt fairly happy. He reached out a hand to take the change. Then he stopped. His eyes were just above the level of the counter. They were staring at the silver coins lying there. The coins were all five-penny pieces. There were just nine of them altogether. Surely it wouldn’t matter if he spent just one more coin.

“I think,” he said quietly, “I think I’ll have just one more of those chocolate bars. The same kind as before, please.”

“Why not?” the fat shopkeeper said, reaching behind him again and taking another Wonda’s Whipple-Scrumptious Fudgemallow Delight from the shelf. He laid it on the counter.

Charlie picked it up and tore off the wrapper… and suddenly… from under the wrapper… there came a bright flash of gold.

Right there in his hands! He will be one of the five lucky children to be shown around Wonka’s chocolate factory!”
