In order to keep the focus (焦点) off me, I went along with the crowd who often played jokes on other kids at school. Being one of them gave me away to make sure that the jokes were directed at others, not me.
Once, I played a trick on a kid. Not only was he terribly embarrassed, but he also had to go to the school hospital.I thought it was going to be funny, but in fact no one thought it was. When my parents learned about this, they talked to me about “The Golden Rule ▲ ”: And I was punished for the hurtful way I had treated others.
“Be a leader who is a good example to others. If you want others to look up to you, give them a good reason to do so,” said Dad. He told me over and over again to be the leader that I was meant to be—to be a big man in my heart and actions, as well as in my body. Dad then taught me to set goals and to do my best at everything I decided to do. Finally, I made the school basketball team. And you may have heard of me. I’m Shaquille O’Neal, one of the tallest and heaviest players in the history of the NBA.

It’s believed that Huck Finn is based on (基于) a childhood friend of Mark Twain’s. In fact, Twain was not alone in basing a fictional character (虚构的角色) on a real-life person.
Severus Snape/John Nettleship
Severus Snape is a skillful wizard (巫师) teaching magic in Harry Potter. The writer, J.K. Rowling, once said that the character was based on a teacher of hers.
The teacher turned out to be John Nettleship, who taught Rowling chemistry. At first, Nettleship felt surprised. “I know I am a strict teacher,” he said. “But I don’t think I am as bad as Snape!” On second thoughts, however, he said that he was so ill-tempered that most of his students avoided making him mad. Also, he used to wear long hair and have an untidy lab. That sounds familiar to Harry Potter fans.
Alice/Alice Liddell
Famously, Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is based on Alice Liddell.
Carroll was close to the Liddell family. One day, ten-year-old Alice asked Carroll to tell her a new story. Carroll began to create his famous tale of Alice and what happened after she fell through the rabbit hole. The little girl liked the story so much that she asked him to write it down. And the rest is history.
Dill/Truman Capote

After having spent first day in the town center, I decided to lose my way on my second day, since I was sure that this was the better way of getting to know the strange city. I got on the first bus in the morning, rode on it for several stops, then got off and walked on. The first two hours passed happily enough. Then I decided to turn back to my hotel for lunch. After walking about for some time, I decided I had better ask the way. The trouble was the only word I knew of the language was the name of the street in which I lived and even that was pronounced badly.
I stopped to ask a friendly-looking newspaper seller. He smiled and handed me a paper. I shook my head and repeated the name of the street and he put the paper into my hands. I had to give him some money and went on my way. Then I met a policeman. I asked him at once. The policeman listened to me carefully, smiled and took me by the arm. There was a strange look in his eyes as he pointed left and right and left again. I thanked him politely and began walking on.

Parapsychologists(心灵学家) say that humans have a natural ability to sense when someone is looking at them. To research whether such a “ six sense” really exists, Robert Baker, a psychologist(心理学家) at the University of Kentucky, did two experiments.
In the first one, Baker sat behind unknowing people in public places and stared at the backs of their heads for 5 to 15 minutes. The subjects (受试者) were eating, drinking, reading, studying, watching TV, or working at a computer. Baker made sure that the people could not tell that he was sitting behind them during those periods. Later when he questioned the subjects, almost all of them said they had no sense that someone was staring at them.
For the second experiment, Baker told the subjects that they would be stared at from time to time from behind in a laboratory setting. The people had to write down when they felt they being stared at and when they weren’t. Baker found the subjects were no better at telling when they were stared at and when they weren’t.
Baker concludes that people do not have the ability to sense when they are being stared at. If people doubt theoutcomeof his two experiments, said Baker, “I suggest they repeat the experiments and see for themselves.”

The driver of the other car, who almost caused a big accident started yelling (喊叫) bad words at us. My taxi driver just smiled and waved (挥手) at the guy. And I mean, he was friendly. So, I said, “Why did you just do that? This guy almost ruined (损坏) your car and sent us to the hospital!” And this is when my taxi driver told me what I now call “ The Law of the Garbage(垃圾) Truck”.
Many people are like garbage trucks. They run around full of garbage, full of anger, and full of disappointment. As their garbage becomes more and more, they need a place to dump (倾倒) it. When someone wants to dump on you, don’t take it personally. You just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on. You’ll be happy with what you did.
I started thinking, how often do I let Garbage Trucks run right over me? And how often do I take their garbage and spread it to other people at work, at home, or on the streets? It was that day I said, “I’m not going to do anymore.”
Life’s too short to wake up in the morning with regrets. So, love the people who treat you right. Forget about the ones who don’t.
