E.Sometimes, in our busy lives we forget to take a moment to tell people what they mean to us. |
We have a close relationship with our phones. We sleep with them, eat with them and carry them in our pockets.
But phone love can go too far — so far that it can reduce human love — between parents and children, wives and husbands, teachers and students, our friends and us.
“A key to a healthy relationship is being present,” said James Roberts, a famous writer. He says that many people are addicted to their smartphones and as if they can’t live without phones. When one partner keeps checking his or her phone, it means that they find the phone (or what’s on it) more interesting than you.
A 2016 study investigated(调查) 200 people about the influence of phones on their relationship. The result showed that 70 percent of them said that smartphones affected their primary relationship. More than one-third saidtheir partner would notice their phones while talking, one out of four said their partner send messages during conversations.
They may not know what to do about it, but they are willing to change. People turn off their phones when they are in class or at a meeting.
Here are some suggestions to leave your phone long enough to connect with your family.
●Set “no phone” areas in your home. With your family, decide which areas of your home, such as the living room and the kitchen, should be technology-free. And consider stopping phone use in the car so that you can use that time to talk to your family about whatever is on your mind.
●Buy some old-fashioned alarm clocks for your bedside table. Put your phones in a basket in the kitchen.
●Keep phones off the table. When you’re eating at home or in a restaurant, keep phones off the table. When a phone was present during a conversation, the partners usually feel less satisfied with their conversation than when phones were absent.
●Practice phone manners. If you must look at your phone, announce that you are doing so. “I am just checking the score/weather/playlist for two minutes,” shows sorry to your partner that you are aware that your attention is away. It may also make you more aware of how often you pick up your phone when your partner is present.
1. What is the purpose for the author to write this passage?

We all need to learn to listen well. Listening is a learned skill, the same as speaking in public. It just takes much longer to learn! Listening is a skill we should be practicing every day.
Listening shows others that they are important. It's a sign of respect(尊重). If someone listens to you carefully when you are talking, it shows that they are really interested in what you are saying.
How do you practice listening? Here are some tips:
Put down whatever is in your hands. Are you in the middle of writing something? Put down the pen and start to listen. Are you reading something? Close it so that it will be impossible for you to look down and start reading again. Then put it down.
Face the person you are speaking with. Facing the person you are speaking with will help you listen more carefully. It will also make the person feel that you find what he is saying important.
Mind your body language. Standing towards the speaker will show interest. Looking around the room shows you have no interest. Looking that speaker in the eye tells him that he is important.
Listen completely. Do not start making comments(评论)after the first few words. Do not start thinking about your reply in your mind. Listen to the speaker carefully and try to understand what he is telling you.

Put yourself out there. This seems clear—the best way to meet people is to actively look for places out where you can meet people! Go to the dance party at your school or the Christmas get-together. Try to meet at least one person by the end of the night.
Practice talking. Even though this may sound strange. Stand in front of a mirror or close your eyes, and then imagine yourself talking to someone. This way is very helpful.
Show your talents. Making new friends is a great way to overcome shyness. Ask your friends to introduce you to their friends. Although that may sound useless, it really isn't. For example, if you like art, you can consider painting something for a party. It will be easier to make you feel comfortable. On the other hand don't be afraid to discover some new interests.
Change your shy look. Take a moment to look at yourself. Are you the kind of person who wears dark clothes? This makes you very unapproachable. You should wear brighter clothes. Go from wearing black, brown, and blue to wearing green, yellow and orange. Remember, you don't always have to change your look. You can just simply make your expression friendlier. Let people know that it's OK to talk with you.

So there are more and more traffic accidents on the roads. Thanks to the efforts of the traffic police, it is said this year the number of traffic accidents across China was 25.2 percent fewer than the year of 2018 during the three-day Tomb-sweeping Day.
Tomb-sweeping Day, also known as Qingming Festival. It is an important occasion for Chinese to honor their ancestors(祖先). Most people go home in memory of their ancestors on that day. About 9.78 million Chinese visited cemeteries to honor their ancestors or relatives during the holiday. A few people also spent the three-day holiday on leisure trains. On Feb 26, when an Italian lawmaker (议员) went into the country’s Lower Chamber with a mask to prevent the novel coronavirus, he was criticized (批评) by his colleagues for “causing panic (恐慌)”. Articles from Western media carry headlines such as “No, you do not need face masks to prevent coronavirus.” You might be surprised, as in China and other Asian countries, people have willingly put masks on during the outbreak.
Western thoughts about masks
In the West, people are taught to wear masks only when they get sick. Masks are seen as a tool to protect sick people and prevent the disease from spreading, so healthy people don’t need to wear them. Therefore, during the novel coronavirus outbreak, overseas Chinese students said that they would be “stared at like a virus spreader” if they go out with a mask. According to a survey done by Global Times among some European and American people, wearing a mask in public can make them feel “worried”, “shy”, and “afraid of being looked at differently.”
But as the number of COVID-19 cases continues to grow around the world, many people in the West are changing their attitudes. In the US, for example, the need for masks is very high now. The US surgeon general (卫生局局长) has been asking people to avoid hoarding masks, as they are more needed in hospitals than by the general public, for this reason people should buy enough for their needs.
Mask culture in the East
In Asian countries like China and Japan, there has been a long tradition of mask-wearing. In China, for example, when doctor Wu Liande invented the modern medical mask during the pneumonic plague (肺鼠疫) in 1910, the mask became a symbol of China’s position as a modern, scientific nation, according to Scottish medical anthropologist (人类学家) Christos Lynteris. The 2003 SARS epidemic again led to the wide use of masks as a form of anti-viral protection in China and elsewhere in East Asia.
In Japan, wearing masks has long been seen as a manner to reassure (使安心) others when one catches a cold or flu. Some Japanese also turn masks into fashion accessories (配饰), with different colors and patterns to match their clothes. Wearing masks is also a way to “hide” for young women when they don’t have their makeup on.
In more collectivist (集体主义的) cultures in Asia, wearing masks might also be a symbol of solidarity (团结) during the outbreak, according to Lynteris. “Mask culture [in Asia] creates a sense of a fate (命运) shared, common obligation and civic (公民的) duty.” People wear masks “to show that they want to stick together” in the face of danger, Lynteris wrote.
