Hundreds of years ago, life was much harder than it is today. People didn't have modern machines. There was no modern medicine, either.
Life today has brought new problems. One of the biggest is pollution. Water pollution has made our rivers and lakes dirty. It kills our fish and pollutes our drinking water. Noise pollution makes us talk louder and become angry more easily. Air pollution is the most serious kind of pollution. It's bad to all living things in the world.
Cars, planes and factories all pollute our air every day. Sometimes the polluted air is so thick that it is like a quilt over a city. This kind of quilt is called smog.
Many countries are making rules to flight pollution. Factories must now clean their water before it is thrown away and they mustn't blow dirty smoke into the air.
We need to do many other things. We can put waste things in the dustbin and do not throw them on the ground, there will be less pollution.
Rules are not enough. Every person must help to fight pollution.

Air pollution is a big problem for cities in most countries. Many people are dying from it. But how can we tell the air quality is good or bad?
On a tree next to a river in Amsterdam, a tiny birdhouse glows (发光) bright green when the air is clean. If you're standing nearby, the birdhouse will also give you a free Wi-Fi connection—but only if pollution level is low enough. The designer is Joris Lam. His birdhouse tells you about the air quality.
Joris’ birdhouse is called TreeWifi. It can be put on a tree around your house to test the air quality. People can see a screen with information about the local air quality and how to improve it. TreeWifi is a simple way for people to know about the air pollution around them. If the birdhouse does not glow, people should care more about the environment. It reminds them to change their lifestyles. For example, to protect the air, they can ride bikes or just walk instead of driving cars.
“Imagine if trees gave free Wi-Fi, people would plant more trees like crazy. It's a pity that they only give us the oxygen(氧气) we breathe,” Joris said.
The birdhouse doesn't work as a home for birds now. Joris and his team are trying to make some changes to it. In the future, they hope birds will live in the birdhouse and the heat of its green light will be used to keep birds warm in winter.

Every morning, she leaves home at half past five to get clean water for her family in a village far away. It takes her six hours to get enough clean water for daily cooking and drinking. She has no time to go to school or to play with her friends. Millions of people in the world are like Napoga. They can’t get enough clean water to keep healthy.
Earth Day is April 22. But on all other days, we must also remember it. The water we use is the most important natural resource(自然资源)on the earth.
Water covers 70 percent of the earth’s surface(表面).But most of that is sea water. We can’t use it for very many things. Fresh water covers only one percent of the earth’s surface.
You probably feel lucky that your life isn’t as hard as Napoga’s, But that doesn’t mean you don’t have to worry about water. We all face serious water problems. One of them is water pollution. All kinds of things from cars, factories, farms and homes make our rivers, lakes, and oceans dirty. Polluted water is very bad for people to drink. And dirty water is bad for fish, too. Now, thirty-four percent of all kinds of fish are dying out.
How do cars and factories make our water dirty? First, they pollute the air. Then, when it rains, the rain water comes down and makes our drinking water dirty. Dirty rain, called acid rain(酸雨), is also bad for plants, animals and buildings.
Scientists say that in 30 years, more than half of the people in the world won’t have enough clean water. We have to learn how to save more water for ourselves and our children. Here is some advice for saving water.
·Turn off the water while you brush your teeth. You can save as much as 450 liters(升)each month.
·Leaky taps(漏水的龙头)waste a lot of water. Fix them right away.
·You can easily cut your 10-minute showers in half, and you’ll be just as clean.
·When you wash dishes, don’t let the water run.
·Only wash clothes when you have a lot to wash. If your washing machine isn’t full, you are wasting water!

Qomolangma is very famous and it is higher than any other mountain in the world. Its newest height is 8,848.86 meters. At the height of 8,000 meters, there is only 30% O2 and the human body can only stand this height for a few days, so it is dangerous for humans to climb higher. But many climbers want to challenge themselves. As Alan Arnette, a mountain climber from America, said “Climbing mountains drives you to look deep inside yourself, and lets you find out whether you are strong enough in mind when you want to stop.”
It’s a good thing that Qomolangma gives people a chance(机会)to become strong-willed(意志坚强的)when they are trying to achieve their dreams. However, Qomolangma is in danger these years because many people leave their waste behind, such as water bottles and plastic(塑料的)bags. They cause the environmental pollution for Qomolangma. Many animals would die after eating the plastic bags. Luckily, many volunteers from all over the world came to Qomolangma to join in the clean-up activity. But the easiest and cheapest way to improve your health is just to sleep eight hours or more every night. The general sleeping rule is that the younger you are, the longer sleep you need. But regardless of(不管)age, some people need to sleep more while for some a few hours is enough.
The problem with sleep is that more and more people in the world are not sleeping enough.
According to the World Health Organization over half the people in the world may be sleep-deprived. Having less sleep not only makes people feel tired but also causes accidents. In the United States alone, sleepy drivers cause at least 100, 000 traffic accidents a year. Also sleep problems can cause medical problems such as high blood pressure.
Why are so many people sleep-deprived? Part of the reasons may be cultural. In the American culture, people put a higher value on work than on sleep. In fact, people who sleep a lot are usually seen as "lazy". Also, you can sometimes hear some people say proudly that they don't have much time to sleep. They only sleep four or five hours a night. It seems that the less you sleep, the more work you'll do.
How do we teach these people to learn the value of sleep? Perhaps they may listen to the advice of Dr. James Maas, an expert(专家)in sleep. He says, "Sleep is like a credit(信用卡)card. When you sleep less, you are only borrowing time. You always have to pay it back. The more hours you don't sleep, the more hours you should sleep to "pay back" the hours on your 'sleep credit card'."
For those who value work more than sleep, they should listen to what a famous person once said. "Don't think you will be doing less work because you sleep during the night. That is a foolish idea which is held by people who have no imagination. You will be able to do more."

To remember her best friend who died of cancer nearly 10 years ago, Fredette decided to serve those in Orange Country who are less lucky than she is.
She began with the simple idea of collecting donated(捐赠的) BuildABears, the popular toy animal that is made by children themselves in the stores' workshops. Fredette then gave them as gifts to the homeless children in California during the holiday season.
With donations at more than 100 bears a year, Fredette and volunteers host activities every year, where volunteers not only give out the bears, but also clothing, meals, and other things.
Not wanting to limit(限制) the giving to just the holiday months, Fredette now hosts other activities for Valentine's Day, Mother's Day and Halloween, providing the chance for her volunteer team to make a difference through the year.
“I love making relationships with the people I serve,” Fredette said.“The thanks they have, hearing their stories and seeing how happy they are, it's so cool.”
Future plans for Fredette include building a public food bank and providing a selfdevelopment class for students in her school who will soon attend college.
Heading to college herself in the fall, Fredette is looking to stay local and continue to help out in her hometown. In fact, she was regarded as a “Dreamer & Doer” not long ago for her work in improving her community, along with 32 other high school students.

Find a hiding place
Unnecessary labor will make you sweat and make you cold. Find a hiding place around you before trying to start your own construction. If you are in a snow-covered area, you may be able to dig a cave in deep snow for protection from the wind. You should try to hide yourself in the middle of the mountain if possible. Stay out of the valleys-cold air falls, and the valley floor can be the coldest area on the mountain.
Signal for help
The best time to signal is during the day. Signal for help from the highest point possible-it will be easier for rescuers to see you, and any sound you make will travel farther. If you take a box of matches and a space blanket (a special blanket for traveling), build three smoky fires and put your blanket-gold side facing out on the ground.
Do not walk away
It will make finding you more difficult, as search teams will be trying to follow your path and may miss you if you have gone off in a different direction. Searchers often end up finding a car with no one in it.
If you get frostbite (冻伤), do not rewarm the affected area until you're out of danger.
You can walk on frostbitten feet, but once you warm the area and can feel the pain, you will not want to walk anywhere. Try to protect the frostbitten area and keep it dry until you are rescued.
1. When lost in the mountains, you can increase your chances of survival if you_____.A.take a space blanket with you |
B.do more physical labor |

The summer vacation should be a time of fun. But more and more university students in China keep themselves busy doing “social practices”.
Internships
Cao Li, 22-year-old, spent fourteen days working in Iron and Steel Works during summer internship. For most of the days, he had to stand the high temperature and loud noise. But he thinks the experience wasn’t helpful at all because he will never work as a steel worker. Compared with him, his classmate Tang Yao had a better summer experience. The young foreign language learner works for a French company in Shanghai.
Study tours in a foreign country
The saying “He that travels far knows much.” is popular in China. Many students use their summer vacation to go on study tours, often to a foreign country. Qi Di is one of them. In order to experience American culture, the 21-year-old girl at Zhejiang University visited a university of the US, on a two-week summer study tour. “I’m going to study in a foreign country after I leave Zhejiang University, so this tour allowed me to see the US from inside,” she says.

How much sleep do we need? We are all different. A baby needs 16 hours of sleep every day. Children 6 to 12 years old need an average (平均) of 10 to 12 hours of sleep. Teenagers need 9 to 10 hours of sleep. An adult needs an average of 7 to 8 hours a night. There are some people who need only 3 hours of sleep. Others need 10 hours of sleep. After the age of 50, the average sleep time goes down to 6.5 hours a night. We need less sleep as we get older.
About one in three Americans has a problem with sleep. Many of these people can’t fall asleep. The name of this problem is insomnia. Some people say, “I didn’t sleep all night.” But that’s not really true. They may sleep lightly and wake up several times. In the morning, they only remember the times they were awake (醒着), so they think they were awake all night.
This is not a new problem. Many famous people in history had insomnia. Some of these people had special ideas to make them sleep. Benjamin Franklin had four beds. He moved from one to another to fall asleep. Mark Twain had a different way. He lay on his side (侧卧) across the end of the bed!
