Before I came to China, I never saw people carrying umbrellas on sunny days. But in China, women carry umbrellas when it’s not raining. “What is the purpose (目的)?” I wanted to know. I find that there are many reasons for this. Firstly, umbrellas protect people from the sun. Many Chinese cities get hot in summer. People sometimes carry umbrellas to keep cool.

But wait a second. If umbrellas can help us keep cool, why don’t I ever see men carrying them? That brings us to the second reason—umbrellas help women’s skin stay fair (白皙的). In China, people think fair skin is more beautiful than tanned (深褐色的) skin. Cosmetics (化妆品) companies even sell special creams and powder (粉) to make skin look whiter.

Women in the US, however, like tanned skin better. They think it more beautiful there. Some people will lie outdoors in the sun for hours to get a tan. But doing this too much can be dangerous, because the sun’s light is sometimes bad for your skin.

And it shows China isn’t the only place where women carry umbrellas during the summer. Women in Greece also carry umbrellas to protect themselves from the sun. So there you have it—umbrellas aren’t just for rainy days. But I don’t think I’m going to start carrying one anytime soon.

The native people of the Arctic are called the Inuit. They live in Alaska, Canada and Greenland. They live in very cold climates. The Inuit people use huskies because the dogs are strong and can live in very, cold climates, too. They are also very good workers.

Today, a lot of Inuit people live a traditional lifestyle. They use animals for food, transport and clothes. In the Arctic, there aren't many vegetables or fruit. In fact, in some places, there aren't any supermarkets. The basic diet of the Inuit people is meat and fish. The Inuit hunt seals, polar bears and reindeer, and their huskies help them. Inuit hunters travel with their dogs. They make sledges with animal bones and skin, and teams of huskies pull the sledges. These dogs can pull heavy sledges and go very fast.

Of all the animals in the Arctic, the husky is the Inuit's greatest helper!

FACT! A team of huskies with a sledge can travel over 150 km in one day.

As a teenager, I hated PE lessons. I was not very good at sports, and I hated team sports because I always felt like I was disappointing the rest of the team. During these years, I sometimes felt disconnected from my body like only my brain was "me" and my body was just a vehicle （运载工具）for carrying my brain around.   

When I started university, I decided to try a kung fu club. To my surprise, I loved it! In my first year, most of us were beginners. I used to go two or three times a week. Because it is not a team sport, I didn't feel sorry about not being very good. And because it is a combat（格斗）sport, you train in pairs, which means that you get to meet people and talk to them. I also appreciated（欣赏）that the focus of the classes was on getting better at kung fu, rather than exercising to change my body. When I was doing kung fu, my body changed—I got stronger and quicker—but the changes were a side effect of the sport, instead of the goal.

When I moved to Italy this year, I decided to start doing a combat sport again. I joined a local martial arts（武术）club and I loved it. We did lots of sparring（拳击）. I think that sparring is like chess, but much faster and much more fun! If your sparring partner tries to hit you hard with his fist, you have to move quickly to avoid him, block or even catch his arm and then throw him to the mat.

When I was a teenager, I would say I just wasn't a sporty person and that I just didn't like sport and never would. Now I think that everyone should try as many sports as possible because I believe there is something out there for everyone! I feel connected to my body and I am happier and have more energy when I have been doing sport.

     Welcome to No. 7 Middle School. It’s the 20th birthday of our school. We have some interesting things for you and your children (孩子们) next week.

On the first two school days, we have an art festival.

There are nice pictures from our art teachers and students. And there are some pictures for teaching. You can know how to draw (画画) from these pictures. There are some photos of your children, too. You can know their life (生活) in our school.

The next day is our sports day. There are two ball games that day. In the morning, we have a soccer game. And in the afternoon, we have a basketball game. You can watch the students and teachers play the games. You can play with them, too.

The day after the sports day, we have a music festival. There are nice songs (歌曲). It’s relaxing for you to enjoy (享受) music here.

On Friday, we have a party. It’s from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. You can eat some nice food here. There are vegetables, fruit, salad, chicken, rice, hamburgers and ice-cream. I think you can have a good time here next week!
