Many years ago, my dad decided to volunteer at the local children hospital. My dad loved kids. It was the perfect job for him. He would talk to them and play with them and do arts and crafts with them.

There was a girl, Karen, who had been admitted with a rare disease that paralyzed(使麻痹，使瘫痪) her from the neck down. I don’t know the name of the disease, but I do know that it was very sad for a girl around eight or nine years old. She couldn’t do anything, and she was very depressed（沮丧的）. My dad decided to try to help her. He started visiting her in her room, bringing paints, brushes and paper. He stood the paper up against a backing, put the paintbrush in his mouth and began to paint. He didn’t use his hands at all. Only his head would move. He would visit her whenever he could and paint for her. All the while he would tell her, “See, you can do anything you set your mind to.”

At the end of the day, she began to paint using her mouth, and she and my dad became friends. Soon after, the little girl was discharged（允许出院） because the doctors felt there was nothing else they could do for her. My dad also left the children hospital for a little while because he became ill. Some time later after my dad had recovered and returned to work, he was at the volunteer counter in the lobby（门厅） of the hospital. He noticed the front doors open. In came Karen, only this time she was walking. She ran straight over to my dad and hugged him really tight. She gave my dad a picture she had done using her hands. At the bottom it read: “Thank you for helping me walk”.

My dad would cry every time he told us this story. He would say sometimes love is more powerful than doctors, and my dad who died just a few months after the little girl gave him the picture --loved every single child in that hospital.

⑤Liu’s students cannot hear or speak. They can’t use any sign language (手语). They don’t know how to learn, either. Liu looks after them every day and she teaches them carefully. For example, she asks them to buy what they want from her in the classroom, so that they can buy things in a real shop.

⑥“If a disabled person gets a good education, he may find a job and live a different life,” Liu said. With her help, over 20 children went to college. Liu met one of them days ago. The student is a mother of three now, and she has a happy life.

“I’m honored to take part in two Olympics,” said Han. “Being a volunteer is different from organizing them, though both are great experiences. Passion is necessary for being a volunteer, which requires volunteers to be in high spirits and warm-hearted. But being an organizer, they may face many new challenges because more thinking and planning are needed in organizing volunteers.”

Because of COVID-19, volunteers need to be quarantined（隔离）after the test events as well as after the Winter Olympics and Paralympics（残奥会）. This means they have to give up more time for this job. As around 90 percent of the volunteers are university students, according to Han, this could affect their schoolwork. So Han's team has helped schools to support the students as much as they can.

Han’s team worked with schools to recruit students. “For example, volunteers from Tsinghua University are responsible for the National Stadium, while those from Peking University take care of the National Aquatics Center, Han said. The cold weather is another challenge, as some games will be held outdoors. The outdoor volunteers need to have physical training, like 15-kilometer walks, to prepare for their work. The organizing committee also provides hats, warmer pads and more frequent shifts for them.

“Many volunteers have developed interest in winter sports because of this experience,” Han said. “I’ve seen them post pictures of themselves skiing and skating. I’m happy that the volunteering experience is meaningful for them.”

All of us admire the strength Wei and his mother have shown. But being strong does not mean they can be neglected(被忽视) by society. Being responsible and helpful should be the aim of each public organization.

We have had lots of technology and it has changed our lives a lot. There is no doubt that humans will continue to use more and more technology. Here are some examples of modern technology that will change our ideas and will affect our lives greatly.
