The city’s youth basketball league was holding a celebration. Today’s championship game marked 50 years since the league’s first title game (冠军争夺赛).
Before the game, Jordan looked over a special program. It listed the winners of each championship game and the top scorers.
Jordan stopped when he read the name of the top scorer from a game 30 years before. “Devin, look!” he said to his friend, “You see who has the all-time record? My dad! Twenty-four points. But he never told me that.”
“Twenty-four points,” Devin said. “That’s great.”
Jordan’s best was 19 points. He was the league’s top scorer.
When his parents showed up at the gym, Jordan brought the program over to them.
His dad laughed. “I had quite a game that day,” he said. “But look at the score. I prefer to trade all my points for a win.”
Jordan hadn’t noticed that his dad’s team had lost by one point.
“That was a great group of teammates,” Dad said. “I am still a friend of many of them”
As game time came near, Jordan slapped hands with his teammate Tara and then started to warm up. The courts filled up quickly.
Jordan felt strangely calm. He’d played so many games in this gym that it was like his own home. Jordan had led his team to a victory over the Lions last season. Why shouldn’t today be like that?
Jordan grew even more confident when he hit the first 2 shots (投篮).
The Lions called a break. Jordan ran to the bench and jumped up and down with excitement.
“Great start,” Coach said. “But those guys are tough. They’ll come back on us.”
He was right. By half-time, the Lions had pulled ahead, 27-24.
Jordan looked up at his parents. His dad nodded and called, “Great work!”
But Jordan didn’t feel quite as confident as he had before.
The teams traded baskets throughout the second half, with neither building a lead.
Eleven seconds left. The scoreboard was clear: LIONS 51. BADGERS 51.
Coach told Jordan to bring the ball up the court. “Look for Devin inside, but take the shot if you’re open,” he said.
Jordan glanced at his dad again. His dad pointed to Jordan, then held up two fingers on one hand and three fingers on the other.
“Me?” Jordan mouthed.
Dad nodded. Jordan had scored 23 points. Another basket would break the record. And it was the right time to do it!
Jordan ran right, then left, but he was still a long way from the basket.
The viewers started counting the seconds. “Four... three... two.”
Jordan rose to shoot. As the Lions rushed toward him, he passed the ball to Devin—wide open near the basket.
Devin turned and shot. The ball fell cleanly through the net for the winning points.
“Yes!” Jordan shouted. After celebrating with his team, he ran to hug his parents. “You still have the record,” he told his dad.
Dad smiled. “You have something more important. A championship. And great teammates. Congratulations on your history!”

I’m in trouble. Last week, we had a football match, and we lost. We played well, but one teammate didn’t do his best, I think. It was like he wasn’t even on the court! Disappointed by his behaviour, I said all this to my best friend. But he told everyone else what I’d said. I’m really angry with my friend-what should I say to him? And should I say anything at all to my teammate?
Reply There is an old American saying, “Loose lips sink ships.” This means that if you speak too much about something, especially to people who you don’t know so well, it’ll cause all kinds of trouble. Maybe now you’re in this situation. Forget all these unhappy things. Like 13
Reply Perhaps most importantly, think about your own behaviour. When filled with anger, you would say whatever comes to your mind. You might hurt others. Take a deep breath, calm down, and always remember: think first, speak later. Like 11

On the way from the airport to her dad’s house, Katie almost kept silent. Finally, her dad asked, “Do you want to talk about it, Katie?”
For a moment, Katie sat silently. Then she said, “I’m sorry, Dad. I just don’t think I want you to get married.”
“I thought you liked Celia,” Katie’s dad said.
“I do like Celia,” Katie answered, “It’s not that at all. I just don’t know if I want her for a stepmother—that’s totally different.”
“It really is different,” her dad agreed, “But I hope you’ll get to like having Celia as a stepmother. She likes you a lot, you know, and I’ll bet Megan will, too.”
“Who’s Megan?” Katie asked. She hadn’t heard that name before.
“She’s Celia’s daughter,” her dad replied, “She is your age, actually, so maybe you’ll even have something in common.”

Students join in groups, speaking freely and creating a cheerful atmosphere(氛围). I had to work hard to learn more vocabularies, so I could better communicate with my international classmates. I used to pay little attention to my word usage(使用), but now I pay more attention.
During my visit, I also went to some famous universities in Boston, New York and Washington. We learned about the history behind the universities. When I was 10, I told my mother that the only thing I wanted for the New Year was a pogo stick(弹簧单高跷). However, my mother said it was so expensive that we couldn’t afford one.
On a Saturday before New Year, my family went shopping together. While my mother and I were picking out the gifts, my dad said, “I’ll be back soon-I need to see something in the tool area.” A moment later, he came back with a long box. I remembered wondering if there was a pogo stick in it.
When we arrived home, my dad put the box in the garage. While my parents were busy with their chores, I quietly walked out to the garage and found the box. I was so excited and I knew as soon as I opened that magical box, my bright, shiny pogo stick would appear. No such luck! Inside the box was a silly old broom(扫帚).
That New Year morning, I got some gifts like a tiger toy and a saving pot, but I didn’t get the present that I really wanted. How upset I felt at that moment though I didn’t want my parents to see!
After cleaning up the room, my dad went to the garage. When he came back, he was carrying a beautiful pogo stick. I couldn’t believe it! My parents probably got quite a laugh from the trick they played on me.

They did not look at rivers in the Arctic and Antarctica or in wastelands. The scientists looked into changes to rivers over the past 200 years. They discovered that many kinds of things in over half of the rivers had been seriously influenced by humans. The researchers said there were many reasons for this influence. A big reason is the introduction of new kinds of fish into rivers. Other reasons include pollution, overfishing and farming.
The researchers say the worst-hit rivers are in western Europe and North America. This is because these areas have large and rich towns and cities. The lead researcher said: “Rivers along which there are highly developed countries, like the Mississippi River, are the most strongly influenced.” The River Thames in London was one of the worst-hit rivers in the study. The least - influenced rivers are in Africa and Australia. That's why Ma Min, a young art teacher at Nanjing Zhonghua High School, helped her 300 students work together to recreate this famous painting.
Ma used a special method to help her students recreate the panoramic(全景的)painting. She found a picture of the painting, divided the picture into eight parts and gave each part to a different group of students. Each student was responsible for drawing a part that was about the size of a sheet of paper. Ma then spent about a month joining the parts together to form the finished painting, which 84 centimeters wide and 20 meters long.
The students have been working on the painting since October. They had to use their imagination to fill in details(细节)that were unclear in the painting, such as small trees or eaves(屋檐). They communicated with each other and made sure that their parts matched with each other both in form and style.
The students also had to do a lot of work in addition to painting. They did a lot of research and made some interesting findings. Li Zixuan, 13, was asked to paint the busy streets along the river. She learned that pillars(柱子)were used to create boundaries near the river. Across this boundary, vendors(商贩)were not allowed to do business and shops were not allowed to open. Otherwise, they would be punished with beatings.
The students also made a video to show their findings for other students to learn from. “The students made discoveries and innovations(创新)based on historical inheritance(传承)and their own thinking,” Ma said. “This is their own artistic creation.”
