An apple a day keeps a doctor away. Have you ever heard anyone say this? Do you think if people eat one or two apples a day they won’t get sick? Last year some scientists wanted to find out if this old saying is true. They divided a college class into two groups. The first group ate 2 apples a day. The second group didn’t eat apples. After six months they added up the times the young people got sick. The apple eaters turned out to be healthier than those who hadn’t eaten apples. It seemed to show that an apple a day does keep people healthy.

【推荐1】Eat like a king in the morning, a prince at noon, and a farmer at night. This saying is all about the importance of breakfast. And now scientists can tell us just why it’s so important. According to a study carried out at Imperial College London, UK, skipping the first meal of the day not only means you eat more at lunch, but also that your brain wants to find more unhealthy foods.
The study suggests that there is a special part of our brain called the orbitofrontal cortex (眶额皮层), which plays an important part in making choices about what we eat. It is used for identifying the taste of food, especially when skipping breakfast. It is more likely to target high-calorie foods when you’re on an empty stomach.
Scientists did an experiment on this. Dr Tony Goldstone from Imperial College London, scanned (扫描) the brains of 21 men and women, around the age of 25. On the first day, these people skipped breakfast before the scans. On the second day, they had cereal (谷物), bread and jam as breakfast. After the scan on both days, they had their lunch.
When the volunteers had skipped breakfast, they ate around 20 percent more at lunch, compared with days when they had eaten breakfast. Their brain scans also showed the orbitofrontal cortex was especially responsive to high-calorie foods. “We believe that it identifies the value of foods – how pleasant, how delicious something is,” Goldstone told The Guardian.

文章大意:本文主要讲述了美国孩子饮食中摄入很多糖分的现象,建议孩子们应该多喝水和吃健康的食物。

【推荐3】Kids are having more sugar and junk food in the US now.

They get sugar from sodas, sweet juice and some other drinks. There was a new study. It was on 8,400 children. They were between the ages of 2 and 19. It found that twenty percent of the children didn’t drink any water. That’s on any given day. It also showed that those kids got more calories (卡路里) from sweet drinks. That’s compared to children who did drink water every day. Children who do not drink water can have almost twice as many calories. “Kids should drink water every day. And the first drink for kids should be water because it is healthy,” said one teacher.

The study showed two thirds of the children have junk food for lunch for it is fast and delicious. Junk food, like hamburgers, hot dogs and French fries, makes children in the US overweight (超重) and brings many health problems. This is because it has lots of salt and sugar. Children who eat junk food four to five times a week are easy to have heart diseases. “Kids should keep a balanced diet with both vegetables and all kinds of meat because giving what our body needs is important,” said another teacher.
