Actually, some of the country’s best artists are making efforts to bring art into hospitals to soften the hardness of modern buildings.
Of the 2,500 national hospitals in Britain, almost 100 now have very special art paintings shown in hallways, waiting areas and treatment rooms.
These recent movements first started by an artist, Peter Senior, who set up his office at a Manchester hospital in northeastern England during the early 1970s. He felt the artist had lost his position in modern society, and that art should be enjoyed by more people. A common hospital waiting room might have as many as 5,000 visitors each week. What a better place to hold exhibitions(展览)of art! Peter held the first exhibition of his own paintings in the waiting room of the Manchester Royal Hospital in 1975. And believed to be Britain’s first hospital artist, Peter Senior was so much in need that a team of six young art school students soon joined him.
Now in the hallways and waiting rooms, the visitors experience a full view of fresh colors, playful pictures and restful yards.
The special environment may cut down the need for expensive medicine for a patient. A study has shown that patients who had a sight into garden needed less medicine than those patients who had no sightseeing at all or only a brick wall to look at.

As the shopkeeper handed it to them, suddenly the tea cup spoke. "You don't understand." it said. "Once I was red and looked ugly. I was rolled and struck (捶打) over and over by my master. I shouted out, 'Let me alone.' But he only smiled, 'Not yet.' Then I was put on a wheel which was moving, and suddenly I was pushed to move around and around. 'Stop!' I cried. But my master only shook his head and said, 'Not yet.' Then he put me in the oven. I was fired at a very high heat. I wondered why he wanted to burn me, and I cried and knocked at the door. But he just shook his head."
"Finally, the door opened. He put me on the table, and I began to become cool. Then I was polished. After that, my master brushed and painted me all over. How terrible the smell was! I thought I would die. 'Stop!' I cried. He only shook his head, 'Not yet.' Then suddenly he put me into the second oven. This oven was twice as hot as the first one and I couldn't breathe at all. Facebook, Instagram, and other social media have changed the way we communicate with friends, family, and colleagues. Many of us use these platforms to post opinions, show off our accomplishments and so on.
This means that social media is public information and can be used against you. Lawyers use social media as evidence. They often look for pictures and posts that could potentially disprove your injury claim. Your posts can still be found even if your information is private when the posts potentially are related to your case. The court(法庭)may determine that your public posts may lead to admissible evidence. They will not make you offer entire information, but only what they think is related. Defense lawyers wish to prove that the injured party, physically, emotionally, or financially, is lying about their injuries.
Even posting about your emotions can discount your claim tremendously. Say, you sue someone for your pain and suffering because you are depressed, yet you post pictures of yourself smiling and you have quoted "Life is Good." attached to the photo. If and when the defense lawyers get a hold of the posts, your pain and suffering claim may not hold up in court.
Most people only post about the good times on social media, rarely about the hardships and misfortunes. Insurance companies are allowed to follow you and gather information as evidence. Social media makes it easier. Before social media, insurance companies and lawyers had to hire investigators to follow people around to spy on them. Social media makes this entirely a lot easier.
If you have posted content related to your claim, it is too late. You must not change evidence. Deleting your account would be considered you're destroying evidence and that will affect your case. The best practice would be to stay off social media until your case has come to a close.
1. What can we learn from Paragraph 2?A.Posts on social media cannot be trusted. |
B.Involving in a personal injury case brings you a lot of trouble. |
C.Your posts can be used as evidence against you in a law case. |
D.Social media plays a more and more important role in our life. |
A.Start a legal case against someone. | B.Have a fight against someone. |
C.Protect someone in court. | D.Beat someone very hard. |
A.You needn't worry when you keep information to yourself in social media. |
B.The court will require you to provide all your posts when you're involved in a case. |
C.Your smiles in the posts may fail you in your pain and suffering claim. |
D.Most people tend to post about their hard times instead of the joyful moments. |
A.Supportive. | B.Careful. | C.Interested. | D.Confused. |
A.Keep away from social media. |
B.Post both good and bad things on social media. |
C.Communicate with your friends face to face. |
D.Stay off social media for a personal injury claim. |

There’s a link between cold air and the night lights. “Part of it is that it tends to be drier in the winter,” said Diane Tumshek, an astronomer at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Even though it’s invisible, moisture (湿度) can change the way light moves through the air. And in the summer, moisture can make stars appear more dull.
Air temperature is also what puts the twinkle twinkle in the little stars. “Even on very clear nights, some of the atmosphere is cooler, and some of the atmosphere is warmer, said Tumshek, who also works with the Allegheny Observatory (阿利根尼天文台). And when the light from a star passes through those bubbles of varying temperatures, “it bends and shifts the light, so that we are seeing stars appear to dance or twinkle,” she said.
For star lovers in the United States, there’s another factor that comes into play for bright winter stars, although this is a matter of coincidence. During Earth’s journey around the sun, “there are just simply more bright stars visible from the Northern Hemisphere in the winter sky,” Tumshek said. If you really want to see a shiny star, just try to find a burning ball of gas called Sirius near the horizon. At 8.6 light-years away, Sirius is relatively close to Earth and the brightest star visible in the night sky. It is also large — nearly twice as big as our sun and 20 times as bright. So this winter, when the world turns cold and it seems like we should be spending more time indoors, consider asking an adult to go exploring outside. With a warm coat and a clear sky, any night can be turned into a treasure hunt. All you have to do is to look up.
1. What does the underlined word “dull” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?A.not shiny | B.not exciting | C.not sever | D.not smart |
A.By changing the bubbles around them. |
B.By putting the twinkle twinkle in them. |
C.By varying the direction of the light from them. |
D.By making the stars dance and twinkle in the sky. |
A.It can be found at any night. | B.It is 20 times as bright as the sun. |
C.It is a burning and shiny ball. | D.It is closer to Earth than other stars. |
A.To advocate stargazing in winter. | B.To call on people to focus on stars. |
C.To present new research results about stars. | D.To explain why stars are more visible in winter. |
