Once there was a man named Clarke. He lived alone and owned a small shop in town. He was very kind-hearted and was always ready to help people in trouble. He often gave away what he had to the poor, so, as a result, he was quite poor himself.
In order to help the poor, he learned medicine by himself and tried to help treat the sick people. So the thankful people called him Doctor Clarke even though he wasn’t a real doctor at all.
One day a poor woman asked Doctor Clarke to go and see her husband, who was very ill and felt terribly weak. Doctor Clarke went there and found the family was very poor. The husband couldn’t find a job for a long time and the wife could hardly make any money, either. Doctor Clarke looked him over carefully and to his surprise, the husband was not ill. Instead, he was hungry because there was no food in the house.
“Come over to my house this evening and I will give you some medicine for your husband.” Doctor Clarke said to the woman.
When the woman arrived at the doctor’s house in the evening, Clarke gave her a paper bag with something inside and said, “Here is the medicine and it will be good for your husband. Don’t open it until you get home.” “What are the instructions for taking it?” the woman asked. “You will find them inside the bag.” answered Clarke.
After the woman got home, she opened the paper bag and found there was some money in it!

It was the summer before I entered high school. I was volunteering at a blood drive. As I helped people at the canteen, I fell into a conversation with some of the donors (献血者). Some told me it was their first time; some said it was their fiftieth time. One elderly man talked about how his own near-death experience had encouraged him to start donating blood.
I left that blood drive with my mind swimming with stories. I had never before had such a meaningful volunteering experience. It was then that I seriously considered joining the Red Cross. I signed up with the Red Cross club at my school. Whether it was teaching CPR (心肺复苏) or organizing a Leadership Development Camp, every volunteering activity was meaningful.
In September 2017, my home, the Columbia River Gorge, was destroyed by forest fires. The air was heavy with smoke. Many families had to leave their homes. The Red Cross stepped up to offer their help. And within a few days, our school Red Cross club held its first meeting of the school year. During the meeting, we discussed different plans of action. Over the course of three weeks, we were able to raise thousands of dollars.
The Red Cross has enriched my life in countless ways. I am now excited to continue my journey as a lifetime Red Cross volunteer. I am ready to prevent suffering wherever I am needed.

After I finished my appointment, I was hungry. I stopped at a restaurant to order a burrito (墨西哥卷饼) to take home and eat while working.
Since it was a little before noon, there was a long line waiting for the order. A woman, who I later learned was Marcella, was paying at the register (柜台). She asked the woman behind her in line if she would like a drink and then asked me. We both said no, but she continued to pay for both of our meals—even though we were strangers. I asked Marcella why she did this, and she said that someone once did something similar for her. The person asked that she mightpay it forwardsomeday and she was making good on her promise.
Before I left, she gave me a warm hug and asked only that I do an act of kindness for a stranger when I could. I arrived home, but instead of working through lunch, I sat and reflected back on her kindness. Marcella didn't need to pay for my lunch. But she did, and it brightened my day. Not because I got to keep my $15, but because she was kind—and did not want to receive anything in return.
As I promised her, I plan on paying her kindness forward. Maybe, just maybe, I'll make a small difference in someone else's life, and the ripple effect (连锁反应) will continue, because that's what being human is all about—being kind, even to a stranger.

His hiccups began one Sunday lunch time and continued day and night for two weeks. After the first week, Harry's parents took him to hospital, but it took another week for the doctors to cure his attack. Harry, who is now back at school, described what happened to him.
“When I began to hiccup, I drank a glass of water but that didn't do any good. That evening I had hiccups every four seconds. We tried everything to stop them. I held my breath and drank cold drinks. My father even tried to give me a shock but that didn't work either.”
After a week of sleepless nights, he went to hospital. The doctors took an X-ray of his chest but they couldn't find anything wrong.
“They gave me some medicine and my hiccups slowed down, but it was another week before the medicine worked completely and my hiccups stopped.”

I can’t forget he played with me when I was 3-4 years old. He taught me how to read when I was at the age of 5. He took care of me all night when I was sick. Whenever I felt down, he would cheer me up. He also cared about my lessons and often helped me get ready for examinations. Later he sent me to New Delhi for the best education. Whenever I needed money, he never refused. He always managed money for my studies.
Two years ago, I got a job at a hospital in New Delhi. When I helped my first patient, I got a strong feeling of satisfaction. When I got my first salary(薪水)which was about ten times more than my pocket money, I spent it all on myself.
When I returned home one fine morning, I heard my father communicating with one neighbor. He was telling him my success in the job very proudly. He also told him that I had a higher salary than him at the end of his work. A dream, his son should become better than himself came true.
I was unable to move on my feet. Past 23 years flashed into my mind in a moment. I knew my father loved me very much. I could understand the meaning of my father’s aspirations(愿望). “Thirsty?” Grampy asked, smoking as usual.
“Yes,” my reply.
“How would you like to run over to the gas station there and get yourself a bottle of Coke?”
I couldn’t believe my ears. Had I heard right? Was he talking to me? On my family’s modest income, Coke was not a part of our budget or diet.
“Okay,” I replied shyly, already wondering how I would get across the street. I’d never done that before and it worried me a little. But I was a brave little boy.
He gave me a dime, stood up and looked both ways along the street. When he was sure it was safe for me, he told me to cross. I thought I would never make it, but I did. Now I was on the other side, but next came the garage, I went inside and looked around me. Hmm, not so strange. I’d been in a garage before, with my father. I found the coke machine and put in my dime. Clunk! Out the bottle came. Coke in hand, I proudly went back in the early evening. Grampy was waiting patiently. He smiled!
I made it back to the other side and Grampy shared the coke with me. It was the coldest, most delicious drink I have ever tasted. I was very happy. But I was happy about more than the coke. I had begun to grow up a little—thanks to Grampy, and a little to myself.
