Karen had a son called Michael. Karen and her husband would have another baby soon. Michael was happy to be a brother. Every day he sang a song to the baby.
Later Michael’s little sister was born. But she wasn't in a good condition. The days passed by. The little girl didn’t get better. The doctor told the parents there was very little hope.
Then Michael kept asking his parents to let him see his sister. “I want to sing to her,” he said. But kids are never allowed to go to ICU(重症监护室).
Finally, Karen decided to take Michael to see his little sister. The doctors refused Michael at first. But Karen said if he didn’t see his sister, he might never see her alive.
Michael looked at his weak sister. After a moment, he began to sing, “You're my sunshine, my only sunshine. You make me happy...”
The baby girl seemed to respond. The pulse(脉搏)rate and breathing began to calm down.
“Keep on singing, Michael,” Karen encouraged his son.
“You never know, dear, how much I love you, please don’t take my sunshine away.”

My darling Grandfather, I don’t think I could ever find the words to describe the positive (积极的) influence you have had on my life. I’m writing to tell you how important you are in my life. Grandpa, I couldn’t imagine where I would be now without you and Grandma. Through all the difficulties, you two have been like a rock in my life and a peaceful island in a big lonely ocean. You have given me power in my life. Seeing you two again was always like a homecoming. When I came to visit, your loving arms welcomed me and we had wonderful times together talking and walking. You have shown me that there are men who are caring and good. I remember when I was a little girl, how you held me tightly (紧紧地) when I couldn’t sleep. You always spoke kindly to me. You have shown me what a family man is—a man who gives what is best for his children. You always gave, even when it was not easy for you or when you were tired and unwell. You have also shown me what a caring husband is—a man who loves his wife as much as he can. We know that no one is perfect, but in my whole life I never heard you raise your voice at Grandma or treat her disrespectfully (不尊重地). Dear Arizona,
My brother is so lucky. Good things are always happening to him. Do you believe in luck? And if so, how can I get more of it?
Yours,
Looking for luck
Dear Looking,
It began one morning. I wore my brother, Tex’s hat and walked to school. That day, I didn’t miss the bus, because the bus was even later than me---that never happens! The luck went on. In the English class, I did well in spelling all the new words.
Then, when I came back to home, I asked Tex to borrow this hat one more day, because I had an audition(试镜)for the school play the next day. Tex agreed, and I gave him a warm hug. My audition was great. It was a super lucky day for me.
“Wow, Arizona!” said my friend Maria, “I can’t believe how amazingly you just did!”
“Thanks!” I said. “But honestly, the only reason is that I had a lucky hat.”
“What lucky hat?” asked Maria.
“This one,” I said, reaching into my backpack(背包), where I thought I’d put Tex’s hat. But it wasn’t there! “Oh, no!” I cried. “It’s gone! What am I going to tell Tex?”
Maria helped me look for it. Luckily, we found Tex’s hat in my locker(寄物柜). Also luckily, I discovered that I could be lucky with or without a hat.
“So it wasn’t the hat,” said Maria. “This is just a wild guess, but maybe it was all those hours you spent practicing over the past month.”
So, dear Looking, I guess you could say that luck is the result of being well prepared, believing in yourself, and maybe just a bit of magic! In other words, luck may come your way, but you have to be ready for it when it does!
Yours,
Arizona

If you look carefully at the plants around you, you will find that there are two kinds of plants: flowering plants and non-flowering(不开花的) plants.
Flowering plants can make seeds(种子). The seeds are protected by the fruits. Some fruits have one seed, some have two, three or four, and some have many seeds. But a few fruits have no seeds at all. An example of a fruit without seeds is the banana fruit.
Most non-flowering plants do not grow from seeds. They grow from spores(孢子). Spores are very, very small. Some spores are so small and light that they can float in the air. We may say that spores are quite the same as seeds. When these spores fall on wet and shady(阴凉的) places, they usually grow into new plants.

But is this a healthy habit? The World Health Organization (WHO) doesn't think so. In June, it recognized“ gaming disorder(障碍)” as a mental disorder in its International Classification of Diseases, CNN reported.
"Gaming disorder means continuous or repeated video-gaming behavior, whether online or offline. Of course, not everyone who plays video games has this disorder. It has three main signs.
The first sign is when the player loses control over his or her gaming habits. The second is when playing games becomes more important than other activities for the player. The third is when the condition leads to serious problems in the player's personal and family life.
In fact, some countries are already working to solve this problem. South Korea has introduced a law banning (A iE) children under 16 from playing online games between midnight and 6 a.m., USA Today reported. Chinese tech company Tencent is also setting limits on the amount of time that teenagers can play its games. Children between 12 and 18 years old can only play two hours every day.
If you have “gaming disorder", you should ask for professional medical (E 7) help. But if your condition is not that serious, you don’t have to see a doctor. You can use delayed satisfaction to deal with it.
For example, if you want to play video games on weekdays, you can wait to play them during the weekend for three hours. Or if you really want to play them after school, you can tell yourself that you cannot do so until you have finished your homework.
1. According to the passage, which of the following persons may NOT have "gaming disorder"?A.A person who loves playing video games with his friends. |

In many parts of the world, farmers and their families live in villages or towns. In the United States, however, each family lives on its own fields and often can't see any neighbor. Instead of traveling from a village to the fields every morning. American farmers stay on their land all the week. They travel to the nearest town on Saturdays for shopping or on Sundays for church. The children ride on horses to large schools which serve all of the farm families living in the area. In some areas there are some small schools serving a few families and the children walk to school.
Of course, life keeps changing for everyone including farmers. Today there are cars, good roads, radios and TV sets. And of course, there are modern machines for faming now. All these have greatly changed farmers’ life.
Before, farming in America was often a lonely way of living for a long time. Farmers had to deal with their own problems, instead of getting help from others. They learned to try new ways, and thought of their own ideas instead of following old ways.

Some people fast for political reasons. In the early 20th century, women in England and the United States weren’t allowed to vote. So many women went on fast. They hoped that fasting would bring attention to it. Mohandas Gandhi, the famous Indian leader, fasted 17 times during his life. For Gandhi, fasting was a powerful political tool. In 1943, he fasted to bring attention to his country’s need for independence. For 21 days, he went without food. Another famous faster was Cesar Chavez. In the 1960s, he fasted for three weeks. Why? His goal was to bring attention to the terrible working conditions of farm workers in the United States.
Fasting is also a practice in many religions(宗教). Every year during the month of Ramadan, which is a religious holiday, Muslims(穆斯林) fast from sunrise to sunset. Many Indians fast at special time, and there was also a fasting holiday in ancient China.
Of course, not everyone fasts for political or religious reasons. People sometimes fast just because it makes them feel better. The American writer Mark Twain thought fasting was the best medicine for common illnesses. Whenever he had a cold or a fever, he stopped eating completely. He said that this always made his cold or fever go away. Another American writer, Upton Sinclair, discovered fasting after years of eating too much and headaches. His first fast lasted for 12 days. During this time, his headaches and stomachaches went away. Sinclair said that fasting also made him more alert and energetic.
Choosing to go without food can be very dangerous. However, that doesn’t stop people from fasting for political, religious, or health reasons.

At the horse fair there was a man with a gentle voice and kind grey eyes. He offered 23 pounds for me, but they refused. Then a man with a very loud voice came. I was afraid he was going to buy me, but he walked off. Then the grey-eyed man came back again and said:
“I’ll give 24 for him.”
“Done,” said the salesman. “He’s a quality horse and if you want him for cab(出租马车)work, he’s a bargain.”
Half an hour later we set off for London, along country roads, until we came to that great city. There were streets to the right, and streets to the left. We went into one of the small streets, and then into a very narrow street, with small, old houses.
My owner stopped at a house. The door opened, and a woman, a little girl and boy, came out.
“Is he gentle, father?”
“Yes, Dolly, as gentle as a kitten; you can pat him.”
Dolly, the little girl, patted my shoulder without fear. It felt so good! They led me into a comfortable, clean stable, and after a delicious meal I lay down to sleep, thinking “I’m going to very happy here”.
My new owner’s name was Jerry. His wife was called Polly and they had two children, Harry and Dolly. The next morning they came to see me. I loved it when they patted me and spoke in gentle voices.
“Let’s call him ‘Jack’, after the old horse, shall we, Harry?” said Dolly.
“Yes, let’s,” said Harry.
The first week of my life as Jack, the London cab horse was very hard. The noise and the people and the traffic on the streets scared me. But Jerry was a very good driver, and that helped a lot Jerry soon found that I was ready to work hard and do my best, and he didn’t whip(鞭打)me.
He kept us very clean, and gave us as much food as we wanted. But the best thing was that we had Sundays off.

When someone who is in good health dies suddenly, there is usually an inquest(审问). A coroner(验尸官)will do it. His job is to find out exactly how a person died.
If there is nothing suspicious about the death, he will decide that the person died from natural causes or an accident, if, however, he is suspicious, he may decide that the person’s death was caused by a person or persons unknown.
One day the coroner was trying to find out exactly what had caused the death of a local businessman, Henry Watson.
The man’s wife was explaining something. She was very sad and had to stop from time to time. The coroner did not want to make her sadder than necessary, but he had to find out the truth. There were questions he had to ask. “Mrs. Watson, I know this is painful for you,” he said, “but I want you to think very carefully and then answer my questions. You and your husband were having dinner at home. Is that correct? ”
“Yes.” ‘‘Suddenly he fell to the floor? ” “Yes.”
“You stood up and hurried to him? You knelt(跪下)beside him? His stomach was in great pain? ” “Yes.” “Did he say anything? ” The wife kept her head down.
“Please, Mrs. Watson, you must answer the question. What were his last words? ”
The wife took a deep breath and then spoke. “He said,” She replied in a very low voice, “I'm not surprised that seafood we had for dinner cost you only 50 cents.”
