Gottfried Junior’s grandpa has to stay in hospital because he is very sick. Grandpa hates being in hospital. He wants to go back to his old home. But no one will let him out of the hospital. He gets angry easily. Because of that, even Gottfried’s dad is tired of visiting the hospital. Others think he is a “difficult” man.

Gottfried sees all this. He has a kind heart and wants to make his grandpa happy. The boy tells his parents that he must stay out for one night because of a training camp. However, he goes to the hospital and helps Grandpa get back to the old house where he lived with Grandma before she died.

Back home for one night, Grandpa feels very happy. He puts on his old clothes, tastes Grandma’s last jar of lingonberry jam (越橘酱), and says goodbye to his old life.

The book The Runaways tells us a great story of how much a boy cares about his grandfather. He does everything he can to help his grandfather to be happy as he is nearing the end of his life. 【推荐1】Bella was sad. It was the first day of the second grade, but her best friend wasn’t in her class.

In the first grade, Fiona learned how to read first. She helped Bella practice. Bella liked to look at maps. She showed Fiona a map of where they lived.

But their school had two classes for the second grade. Bella was in Class A and Fiona was in Class B.

Bella looked around Class A. She knew a few of the kids. But she still missed Fiona. At art time, Bella sat alone at the easel (画架). She started painting a sad picture. Then a kid named Jerome came and sat next to her. By the end of the art time, they were laughing. Bella was starting to feel better.

Over in Class B, Fiona looked around. She missed Bella. Fiona sat with some kids she did not know during reading time. But then at the break, they went to the playground together. They laughed and played the whole time.

Bella’s Dad picked her up from school that day. When she came out of her classroom, she saw him standing with Fiona’s Mom. Then Fiona came out of her classroom. She came running over. Fiona and Bella were so happy to see each other.

“Girls, we were thinking,” started Bella’s Dad.

“Yes?” the girls said.

“You are in different classrooms, but we should make sure you still get to see each other. Bella, why don’t you go over to Fiona’s house this afternoon? Then next week, she can come to our house.”

Bella and Fiona smiled. They had both made new friends that day at school. But they both wanted to keep their old friends, too.

【推荐3】One day, a crow (乌鸦) finds a big cake on a window sill (窗台). “A strawberry cake! That’s my favorite,” it says.

Before it tastes the cake, a second crow flies down to the window sill.

It says, “Do you want to eat it?”

“You see,” says the second crow, “the cake is big enough (足够的) for two of us.” The first crow thinks for a minute and says, “OK, let’s share it.”

But when they finish cutting the cake into two, four more crows come. “How about sharing the cake with us?” they ask.

The first and the second crows look at each other. They don’t think the cake is big enough for six. But at last they think sharing is a good thing. So they cut the cake into six. They are the same size.

Every crow gets some cake and eats it happily.
