3 . The streets of the Land of the Busy Bees were full of people. The people were busy with their work. Everyone worked, and everyone had something to do. Even if you looked around carefully, you couldn’t have found a lazy person. And there was no one begging for food or money.
“I understand,” said Pinocchio tiredly, “this is no place for me! I was not born for work.”
But at the same time, he began to feel hungry. He hadn’t eaten anything in twenty-four hours.
What was to be done?
There were only two ways for him to get something to eat. He had to either work or beg.
He was too ashamed to beg. His father had always told him that begging should be done only by the sick or the old. He had said that they were the real poor in this world. They had lost the ways of getting bread with their own hands. They were the only people that needed our help. All others should work. If they didn’t work and went hungry, they deserved it.
Just then, Pinocchio saw a man walking slowly toward him. He looked very tired. He was pulling two heavy carts full of coal with great difficulty.
Pinocchio, thinking that the man looked kind, looked down at the ground and said in shame,
“Would you be so good as to give me a penny? I feel weak with hunger.”
“Not only one penny,” answered the Coal Man. “I’ll give you four if you help me pull these two carts.”
“I am surprised!” answered Pinocchio, feeling very much insulted. “I wish you to know that I have never been a donkey. And I have never pulled a cart.”
“Well, good for you!” answered the Coal Man. “Then, my boy, if you really feel weak with hunger, eat two pieces of your pride? And hope they don’t make you feel sick.”
In less than half an hour, at least twenty people passed by. Pinocchio begged each one of them, but they all answered, “Aren’t you ashamed? Instead of begging in the streets, why don’t you look for a job and buy your own bread?”

We usually think fish can’t talk. But there are a lot of sounds under the ocean. In fact, scientists believe that all sea animals—at least 250,000 kinds—can “speak”! “If we stay focused when diving (潜水), we can hear animals all around us,” a UK scientist Steve Simpson said.
In the past years, scientists used sound recorders to hear fish’s “voices”. There are now thousands of recorders in the ocean. They help scientists match sounds with sea life.
A healthy coral reef (珊瑚礁) is one of the noisiest places in the ocean. Scientists can tell if it’s healthy by listening to it. A healthy coral reef should be full of clicks (咔嚓声) made by shrimps (小虾). When some coral reefs dicd in 2015 and 2016, they became quiet. After people set up the protected areas, scientists heard the animals come back.
With the help of listening to the ocean, scientists start to understand sea animals’ languages.
Strong clown fish make short “chirp (啁啾声)” sounds when going after small clown fish. They do this to show they are more powerful. A damsel fish can create a pop sound to scare other fish by quickly opening and closing its mouth. Mother dolphins can use a special voice to talk to their babies. They are saying “I’m here” to comfort the baby dolphins.
1. What is probably Steve Simpson’s attitude towards sea animals’ languages?A.Positive. | B.Worried. | C.Unconcerned. | D.Doubtful. |

Do you know why different animals or insects have their own special colors? Colors in them seem to be used mainly to protect themselves.
Some birds like eating locusts (蝗虫), but birds cannot easily catch them. Why? It is because locusts change their colors together with the change of the colors of crops. When crops are green, locusts look green. But as the harvest time comes, locusts change to the same brown color as crops have. Some other insects with different colors from plants are easily found and eaten by others. So they have to hide themselves during the day and appear only at night.
If you study the animal life, you’ll find the main use of color is to protect themselves. Bears, lions and other animals move quietly through forests. They cannot be easily seen by hunters. This is because they have the colors much like the trees.
Have you ever found an even more strange act? A kind of fish in the sea can release a kind of black liquid (液体) when it faces danger. While the liquid spreads over, its enemies can’t find it. And it immediately swims away. So it has lived up to now though it is not strong at all.
1. Locusts change their color to match the color of crops to avoid being eaten by birds.2. Insects that look different from plants are active both during the day and at night.
3. Animals that have colors different from trees would be more easily noticed by hunters.
4. Some fish release a black liquid to kill their enemies when they are in danger.
5. The text mainly discusses how animals and insects use colors to protect themselves.
8 . Have you ever dreamed of traveling to space? With the development of science, you may soon be able to book a ticket. Many companies now can offer space travels. Let’s take a look.
Fly me to the moon A rich man in Japan named Yusaku has invited eight famous people to join him for a trip around the moon with the help of Elon Musk’s Space X company. The trip, called Dear Moon, will take three days to fly to the moon orbit (沿轨道运行) and then spend three days returning. It will take place in 2025. |
Living in a space hotel The US company Orbital Assembly Corporation (OAC) planned to start building the world’s first space hotel in 2025. It will turn itself around to create artificial gravity (人造重力). The hotel is expected to have restaurants, cinemas and rooms for up to 400 guests. |
Short space trips Some people may prefer to simply have a taste instead of staying in space for a long time. Tickets for a 90-minute journey have been on sale to the public since Feb. 16. The first short space trips of Virgin Galactic, a company set up by a British businessman, are set for later this year. The spaceship travels in space while people enjoy several minutes of views of the earth from the windows. |

A good memory is often seen as something that we are thirsty for, while a bad memory as something that can hardly be changed.
◆ Take an interest
We all remember the things we are interested in, and always forget the ones that bore us. This explains the reason why school boys remember football results easily but struggle(挣扎) with dates from their history lessons! Develop an active interest in what you want to remember.
◆ Repeat things in chunks(块).
Repeating things in chunks is the best way to remember things in a short time, for example, remembering a long number for a few seconds.
The following numbers would be impossible for most of us to remember: 1492178919318483. But divide them into “groups” or “chunks”, and it becomes much easier: 1492 1789 1931 8483.
◆
It’s another good way to make up a story which includes all the things you want to remember. In experiments, people were asked to remember up to 120 words using this way. When they were tested later, they could remember about 90% of them.
A.Make up a story. |
B.Take physical exercise. |
C.The test result was really amazing! |
D.Grouping numbers may help you to remember them. |
E.As we know, too much pressure is very bad for the memory. |
F.In fact, there is a lot that you can do to improve your memory. |
G.One way to make yourself more interested is to ask questions — the more, the better! |
