Group 3, Class 1 (5 members)
Hi, guys. Our classmate Li Hong has some trouble these days. Her family lost everything in a big house fire. Our class is planning to raise some money to help her family. Group One will have a Car wash. Group Two will have a cookie sale. What about us? Does anyone have a good idea? | Li Ming
Wang Mei | I’m sorry to hear that. Let’s help her overcome the difficulties together. Mm, what about having a food festival?
Yang Hao | Great idea! I suggest we hold it at the gym net Sunday. We can ask our teachers for some help. Let me organize the food festival and I’ll make sure it’s a success.
Li Shan | I’ll make posters because I enjoy drawing. I’ll put up posters around our school to let more people know about the food festival. I’m thinking of getting my sister, Xin Ran to help us because she has a lot of fans on the blog. That would help bring more people to know our event.
Han Yuxi | I am a member of the school cooking club. I can invite all my friends in the club to make some special dishes. Some of my foreign friends will come to give us a hand, too. At that time, they will cook foods from their own countries.
Good job, everyone! Wang Mei and I will work together with all of you to make the food festival a success. Helping others can make our school a better place. | Li Ming |

3 . Make a Difference Day
Do you know about Make a Difference Day? It is a day of helping others. It began in the US in the 1990s. It is on the fourth Saturday in October, and this year it falls on 26th October. The idea behind it is to ask people to do something good for their neighbourhood. People don’t need to spend a lot of time or money on it. It’s just doing something to help make someone’s life a little better.
There are lots of ways you can make a difference to people you know or even strangers. Cooking a meal or cleaning your room can make a difference at home. You can also make a difference at school by being kind to someone in the playground or helping your classmates with their lessons. What’s more, you can make a difference for your neighbourhood by giving your unwanted books, clothes or toys to those who need them or by taking part in a litter pick.
“Last year in primary school, I helped out in a Grade One class every week. I helped the pupils with their work. I also read with them. It gave them someone-on-one help, and they grew in confidence talking with older children. I enjoyed working with them and helping with their learning journey at school.” Rapha, an 11-year-old boy, shares his story.
Maria Evans, a middle school teacher, says it’s important to do something nice for another person because it can make the kindness pass from one person to another. “The things you did show them they are important. You may get closer to others. Your kindness might let them help others too.”
When you do something nice for someone else, you’re showing yourself that you can make a positive (积极的) change for others. You feel able to make a real difference. It is important when life sometimes seems difficult.
You might think making a difference is just about helping others, but Evans says it’s great for your happiness too. “You can meet new people and build up friendships. It’s a good way to let you believe in yourself because it lets you know that you are important and able to change.”
