4 . Kids who volunteer aren’t just helping their community. They might be helping themselves. That’s according to a recent study in JAMA Network Open. It found that volunteering through school or community groups is connected with better wellness among children and teens.
The study compared kids who took part in community service with those who didn’t. Kids who volunteered were 66% more likely to be considered “growing well” or doing well in general. And kids aged 12 and older who volunteered were 25% less likely to have worries than those who didn’t. The findings come from survey data (数据). Parents of some 50,000 kids in the United States aged 6 to 17 took the survey.
Studies like this have limitations (局限性). The data can’t prove cause and effect. So it’s not possible to say for sure that volunteering leads to better mental and physical health. It could be that people in good health are more likely to have the energy to volunteer. But the data comes at an important time. More than 40% of high school students reported experiencing feelings of sadness or hopelessness in 2021.
So there’s a clear need for mental health resources (资源). Giving back to the community may be one such resource. And this study isn’t the only one to reach that result. Some research has also found connections between volunteering and well-being among adults. Serving the community seems to help people feel a sense of purpose. And it makes them feel connected to those around them. So give it a try, for your health.

6 . Mr. Kent’s students cared about a hurricane (飓风) in Mexico. The wind blew trees over and damaged houses. In the heavy rain, houses and streets were flooded. The class discussed what they could do to help people there.
Ava said, “People will need clothes.”
“They’ll need blankets (毯子) to keep warm,” Melanie added.
“I have a new blanket and a ton of clothes. We can send those to people in Mexico,” said Brett.
“Brett, that’s brilliant!” said Ava. “You, Melanie and I, and anyone else in the school, can bring in our extra clothes and blankets to help people in Mexico.”
The students talked to Mr. Kent about how they could collect clothes and blankets. Some kids were going to put up signs saying “Blanket Drive”. Other kids were writing a newsletter. Everyone was going to ask their friends and relatives for clothes and blankets. Brett was put in charge of stacking all the clothes and blankets in the gym.
News of the Blanket Drive spread, and people living all over the city brought in more clothes and blankets. Everyone in town was talking about the Blanket Drive. The local television station sent a camera crew (摄制组) to the school. The reporter wanted to know whose idea this was.
Finally they found Brett in the gym, over thousands of blankets and pieces of clothing. The interviewer said to Brett, “This was a brilliant idea. You must be very proud of yourself for thinking of it.”
Brett looked at the mountain of clothes behind him and then looked back at the camera. “No,” Brett said thoughtfully. “We had a lot of clothes and blankets, and those people in Mexico really need them. We’re just trying to help. It’s simple.”

A different culture keeps my eyes and mind open. When I stayed in Russia as an exchange student, I learned about it.
One day, a Russian friend invited me to a well-known restaurant in Moscow (莫斯科). I looked forward to trying local food. After arriving there, I found nothing on the table but several small plates, on which there were nuts, a few slices (片) of tomatoes, and several pieces of onions. Although the dishes were simple, we drank a lot and I felt the passion (热情) from the bottom of his heart. In China, when we invite friends or relatives, we always treat them to a big dinner. We buy as much food as we can to show our friendliness.
What a different culture it is! Even though we try our best, it’s very difficult to get used to their customs.
Another Russian custom also impresses me deeply. As we know, it is very cold in winter there. When winter comes, Russians love to swim. They even take their kids outside together. Like their parents, Russian kids rub (擦) their bodies with snow before jumping into the water. Although the water is freezing cold, they all play happily in it.
What fun it is to know about a different culture!
