1 . Nello and Patrasche lived with a very old man. This man, Jehan Daas, was Nello’s grandfather. When Jehan Daas was eighty years old, his only daughter died. The old man had no choice but to take care of his daughter’s son. The old man and the little boy lived happily together. They were very poor, but they had each other. That was enough. As for Patrasche, he made the old man and little Nello happier.
Patrasche, a dog of Flanders, was a slave once. His owner forced him to pull a cart full of iron. One summer day, Patrasche was very thirsty when he was working. But he wasn’t allowed to stop and drink. After some walking, he became dizzy and fell down. His owner ran up to him and beat him. Patrasche couldn’t move. His owner kicked him into a ditch and went away after some time. An old man and a little boy saw Patrasche. “We can’t let such a beautiful dog die,” said the old man. He brought the big dog back to his hut. This was how old Jehan Daas, little Nello and Patrasche first met.

The old man and little Nello took great care of Patrasche. More than this, they loved him. They patted him softly on the head. They made a bed for him to sleep in. This was the first time for Patrasche to feel love. It seemed strange to him yet wonderful. He was determined to get well soon and repay them for their kindness. He wanted to take care of them. When he finally stood up, he barked and stretched his legs. Nello and the old man danced for joy and hugged the dog.
Patrasche walked over to the cart. He knew that the old man used that cart to make money. Old Jehan Daas carried farmers’ milk cans to the market in Antwerp. He sold the milk for the farmers and brought the empty cans back. The farmers then gave him some of their profits. Patrasche decided that the old man would never again pull such a heavy cart Patrasche stood by that cart for days. Finally, he started to pull the cart with his teeth. “Alright, alright!” called old Jehan Daas. “I see that I can’t persuade you not to pull the cart.” The old man put a harness around Patrasche’s shoulders. Patrasche was glad to do the work. This was easy work compared to what he used to do.

Some children are ill and have to stay in hospital for many days. They feel sad and always cry, but toys can make sick children feel happy and quiet.
After Mrs. Black reads the story, she says, “This story gives me an idea.”
“You want us to bring some money for the toys.” “We could bring some of our own toys for the children in hospital,” say the boys and girls one after another.

5 . In American countryside, people often park their cars in the yard when they are at home. So you can easily understand whether people are at home or not. But I used to park my car in the car barn (车库) when I was on holiday.
It was a Sunday morning. I got up early and went to the garden behind our house with my husband. We planted some flowers and trees there. About one hours later, I heard our lazy dog yipping (犬吠) in our house. I at once realized that something must be happening in the house. Quickly, my husband and I came back to the house and saw a boy rush out of our house and run away.
“Come in and see what was gone.” My husband said. “He must think nobody is in.”
“Shall I go to run after him or call the police?” my husband asked.
“No, after all, we have nothing lost.” I replied.
Some days later, a woman with the boy came to my house and asked, “Is it your dog? I found that it killed my chicken yesterday, and I wanted to kill it. But my son said it was yours.”
When I was shaking hands with the boy to thank him. I felt something hard in my hand. I wanted to say something, but he has run away again.

6 . Stuffy Pete sat down on a bench in the New York City Park. It was the third bench to the left as you enter the park from the east.
Every Thanksgiving Day for nine years, an old gentleman had come to find Stuffy there at one in the afternoon. He led Stuffy to a restaurant and watched him eat a big dinner. He was trying to make it a tradition.
Stuffy had just come from a dinner so big that he had almost no power to move. How he expected that gentleman would not come this year! Then his eyes grew wider and his breath stopped.
The old gentleman was thin and tall, dressed all in black. He wore eye-glasses. His hair was whiter and thinner than it was last year. His legs did not seem as strong as they had seemed the year before, but he moved, straight and proud, to Stuffy and toward the tradition that he was building.
“I am glad to see everything’s fine with you. For that blessing you and I can give thanks on this day of thanksgiving. If you will come with me, my man, I will give you a dinner that will surely make your body feel as thankful as your mind,” said the gentleman. The words themselves were almost a tradition.
Stuffy was very full, but he understood that his desire for food on Thanksgiving Day was not his own. It belonged to this kind gentleman.
The gentleman led Stuffy to the restaurant and to the same table where they had always gone. He sat at the table, watching.
The turkey and all the other food were gone almost as quickly as they appeared. Stuffy saw the look of happiness on the gentleman’s face. He continued to eat to keep it there.
In an hour, the battle was finished.
“Thank you for my Thanksgiving dinner,” Stuffy stood up heavily.
They said goodbye, as they did each year, at the door.
Stuffy went around the first corner, stood for one minute, and fell. He was picked up and taken to a hospital.
An hour later, the Old Gentleman was brought to the same hospital.
“That nice old gentleman over there,” a doctor was talking to another. “Do you know what’s wrong with him? He’s almost dead for the need of food. A very proud old man, I think. He told me he hadn’t eaten anything for three days.”
